Chapter 50: 50. Mate’s Life
Chapter Fifty – Mate’s Life
The damage was great. Out of the twenty guards that were stationed, twelve were killed, three badly injured. Only five were unharmed but deeply traumatized.
And then Jessika came to say that their squad leader was beheaded by Beta Cade. They looked hopeless.
Laurel gently tended to the wounds of the three injured. One of them had lost his eyes and he looked like he was only fifteen years old.
When Jessika came, they finished up quickly and helped feed the ones who couldn’t hold a spoon because their hands shook violently.
Some Black Claws warriors told them that they’d temporarily take their jobs till they got better. That must be the nicest thing the warriors ever did for the guards because they began crying. Laurel was moved.
"I hate it." Laurel said as she and Jessika walked out of the guards station. "I hate how these guys have to live."
She was nudged by Jessika, who wore a smile. "You don’t know but that’s really how guards, especially hunters get to live. Even in your father’s pack. In all packs. They typically hunt for rogues and alert the warriors to kill them."
It felt like a learning moment for Laurel. She didn’t know the roles of these ranks. "So why are they badly hurt?"
"It’s because the ’rogue’ found them. Usually, they leave before the rogue notice he was sighted. Then warriors come in. This time, it was a Lycan, and was out for them."
The Princess nodded. She remembered the Lycan telling Stefan that his Prince needed the wolves. She couldn’t catch what he needed it for.
"Stefan is injured. Sorren is mad. And you won’t believe that Jade is a wuss. Sorren and Cade tongue lashed her and she looked like she’d cry!!" Jessika chuckled.
Laurel hesitated. "They actually did that in front of you?"
Jessika nodded proudly. "And I smirked at Jade. She must hate me so much now! But I don’t care!"
Laurel found herself smiling. She suspected that Sorren may not like Jade since he rarely spoke about her and had agreed with her that she was a bane of existence.
Jessika kept laughing so Laurel covered her mouth so no one would hear her. The cook continued narrating how Cade and Sorren bullied Jade and how Jade pathetically wanted to take it out on her instead of them.
"Like seriously, I think I can beat that Luna. She doesn’t deserve Alpha Stefan. Just because her brother was the Alpha’s bestfriend. Oh, did you hear?" Jessika asked.
Laurel nodded. Jade had bragged about that, but with what’s happening now maybe it’s only Stefan that cared about Jade. The other officials didn’t give a damn.
It made Laurel sort of pity Jade. If Stefan stopped loving her, then she ceased being an official. It was indeed a pathetic state to be in.
"Imagine us being as weak as we were when we found our mate." Elma sighed. "I’m sure Sorren and Cade will treat us the same way."
Laurel agreed. After all, Sorren’s interest in her was she wanted to be strong. If she’d met Stefan and he accepted her, she’d be relaxed and dependent on her mate for everything, like Jade was doing.
It could have been a blessing in disguise that her mate was vengeful towards her and wouldn’t accept the mate bond. "I should really get stronger then."
Being in warrior rank wasn’t enough. She’d like to able to give Cade a good beating. She hadn’t still repaid the assault he did to her at the prison.
A warrior werewolf was just a normal Lycan anyway so that wasn’t good enough, at all. Laurel stopped moving when they got in front of Beta Cade’s quarters.
Did she still need to ask him to train her? The incident of today could put him in a bad mood.
"What are we doing here again?" Jessika groaned. "Oh, you have a favor you want to make from him?"
Why did she sound excited all of a sudden?" Laurel shrugged. "I don’t think he’d agree though..."
Jessika whispered to her on how she made her a savior to Stefan and she was entitled to a handsome reward.
Laurel was stunned on how cunny she could be. "I would like to be out of their heads more often than you think. But I’d see if I’d use this to get Beta Cade to train me."
Training? Jessika felt disappointed. Was that what the princess wanted to use such a big card for? Releasing the maids? Leaving her kingdom? To kill themselves? Were those too preposterous to request for?
Jessika’s shoulders slumped. "I guess training is good. He has more chances of accepting those, than what I thought of."
What had she thought of? Laurel shook her head. "Well, he wouldn’t be at his quarters now. Goodbye for now."
"Yeah!" Jessika waved and hurried to her quarters.
Laurel watched her leave and suddenly felt lonely.
"I guess Jessika became your second friend ever." Elma mused. Laurel chuckled. "No, that would be Valkyrie."
At least, with Stefan’s incident, the guards at the maid quarters would be calm and careful as anything could annoy the officials.
The maids would get less work and less harassments.
On entering the maid quarters, Laurel found the maids gathered around a particular place. She rushed towards them and found someone on the ground.
Her heart jumped to her mouth as she rocked her and there was no response. "Valkyrie! What happened?"
She shook her to wake up but she was passed out and her body was growing cold. "What happened to her?"
A maid replied. "She just fell and passed out. The other warriors are coming with medicine..."
While the maid spoke, the two warriors who are always with Valkyrie rushed in with medicine. "Wait, princess..."
Laurel moved aside and they fed Valkyrie the drug.
"It’s her mate, Princess Laurel." One of the warrior said. "Her mate was amongst the guards that were killed today. She felt it because she had already met him."
Heavy lead fell on Laurel. Valkyrie’s mate was dead!
Indeed, many guards from her pack died today. And Valkyrie’s mate had to be one of them. It explained why Valkyrie had been distant for a while. She found her mate.
The other maids cried as they finally understood what happened. Laurel could only imagine what would’ve been her fate if Jessika had let Stefan suffer to death earlier.
The death of a mate threatened the other half’s life too.
