Chapter 51: Poisoned

Chapter Fifty-One – Poisoned

The death of a mate threatened the other half’s life too.

Those words had been in Laurel’s head since Valkyrie fainted when she felt her mate die.

Judging from when the guards died and when Valkyrie fainted, Laurel didn’t think her mate was amongst the ones kills by the Lycan.

The maids had confirmed that she fainted after Stefan had saved the surviving guards, which made Laurel guess Valkyrie’s mate was probably the squad leader who was killed by Beta Cade.

Jessika had later told her that the squad leader panicked and treated her rudely leading to his death. Laurel made sure she never tell Valkyrie that she was related to the death of her mate.

"Valkyrie shouldn’t never know it’s Beta Cade who killed her mate also. It’s safer for her to assume it’s the Lycan." Laurel added.

If Valkyrie decides to go on a rampage to kill Beta Cade, she’d surely lose.

"Did you hear anything about the Alpha’s health?" Laurel asked Jessika. The cook shrugged. "Nothing. Why?"

Laurel zipped her mouth and shrugged too. In her mind, she wondered Jessika’s reaction when she finally finds out he was her mate.

"I should return to the kitchen. Do you want to come with me? I don’t think you’re doing anything in here?" Jessika offered. She noticed the princess was absent minded.

"Jessika, do you ever wonder how you would feel when you finally meet your own mate? The sparks and all." Laurel gazed at her dreamily.

A hand was placed on her shoulders, Jessika shook her head. "Don’t dream of meeting your mate while in here, princess. Unless, he’s a highly powerful wolf that’d take you out of here. No one here is worthy of you. And if your mate is our pack member, he could die at anytime."

The lady didn’t have to hit her with the hard truth. Laurel turned away from her. "I know that. I was just imagining."

There’s no other need to imagine since her mate was found and was a horrible pair, but a girl could only dream.

Jessika began dragging her towards the kitchen. "It’s easy to put an eye on you when you’re close. Oh, do you think I should ask Beta Cade to make you a cook?"

"I doubt that would work. If it does, I’d be sacked when one of them dies from my cooking." Laurel confessed.

Jessika wasn’t sure if she meant her cooking was that bad or she would poison the officials to death. "Well, it’d also be easier for you to get access to good food."

Since Laurel was wary of the meals Stefan brought to her, she had been dependent on Jessika to sneak some food for her.

"Beta Cade nearly killed me. I don’t want to be close to him. Jade, I don’t like her. The Alpha, I don’t want to see him. Sigma is really annoying." Laurel listed her reasons.

Also, the maids at the quarters who were close to her and supposedly looked up to her, wouldn’t they be alone if she left? There was nothing appealing about going to the kitchen – apart from the food.

Meanwhile, Jessika looked perplexed by the amount of interactions the princess must have had with the officials to tag pros and cons to them.

All she knew about them was, Beta Cade ate a lot and was dangerous. Jade was hated by everyone. Jessika didn’t know the Alpha, while Sigma wasn’t hard to deceive.

As they got to the entrance of the cooks’ quarters, Laurel froze, sensing a familiar scent.

Valkyrie. Jessika caught it too. They both hurried to the kitchen and saw another cook sending meals into the tray and moving out.

"Valkyrie is in here." Laurel told Jessika in case she didn’t notice. The cook nodded and walked into the place slowly.

What was the girl doing her? Had she gone mad after her mate died and was now ravaging the kitchen?

Her eyes went towards the cook, with a tray. That meal was to be delivered to Beta Cade.

"Oh, shit!" Jessika cursed and began running towards it.

Laurel noticed and followed her. "What’s wrong?"

Jessika slowed down so she’d catch up. "I need to stop that food from. to Beta Cade."

Laurel didn’t get it? Why should they? The problem should be Valkyrie infiltrating the kitchen, but she went along with it.

The cook, with the tray, hurried to avoid the meal getting cold. Jessika panted as she got to her, in front of the Beta’s quarters. "Senior, wait!" she called the cook.

The cook turned, then gave a disgusted expression. "Ah, what do you want now, Yessica."

"It’s Jessika." Jessika snapped back. "I know you don’t like me and honestly I don’t like you too but you have to stop there now. That food... might be poisoned."

Laurel frowned. How did she know that? By her left, she noticed Beta Cade walking towards them.

"Poisoned? That’s a horrible accusation, little girl." The cook frowned. "Are you saying that I poisoned the..."

"Of course not! I-It’s an accident... it’s not you. If it’s you, why would I try to stop you.?" Jessika chuckled nervously.

Laurel pinched her to signal that the Beta was watching so she should hurry but Jessika didn’t catch it and instead, whispered. "Valkyrie, in the kitchen, poisoned Beta Cade."

The Princess’s eyes widened and she left Jessika. Of course, that would be the connection.

Then did it mean Valkyrie knew who killed her mate?

Jessika walked to the cook. "Senior, I’d prove to you that it’s poisoned." She took out her bird call and called a bird.

She hesitated before opening the hot meal and taking a spoon of soup to feed the bird. They all watched carefully. Nothing happened.

"You see!" the senior yelled. "It’s not..."

The bird had flown away but suddenly fell, acting like it got paralyzed. The cook rushed to it and found it dead.

She looked at the food in her hand and out of fright, threw it down. Jessika exhaled in relief.

"I-I don’t know who did this though but I’m sure it was an accident. Just make another meal." she tried to cover for Valkyrie.

"Beta Cade!" the senior cook bowed.

Jessika chuckled. Was the cook accusing the Beta? "Why’d the Beta poisoned his own food?"

Laurel immediately grabbed her and began running, it was while she ran that Jessika noticed the Beta.

He was staring at her, and was that a smile on his face? Why was the Beta smiling at her?
