Chapter Forty-Nine – Pathetic
That had been her plan earlier, to garner favor from the officials. Jessika smirked. "The Lady’s not here. I’d do it. Stay hidden, Princess."
The cook sneaked out of their hiding place, wearing a pitiful expression. "Alpha Stefan, Alpha Stefan, are you alright? What happened to you?"
She stooped low and helped him to her shoulders. Stefan held unto her tightly but felt his legs count stand in their own. Would this cook be able to support him...?
Jessika pulled him up. The movement stunned Stefan, she began rushing into the pack. Was she that strong? His eyes narrowed at her.
He suspected that all his cooks were omega ranked but she could do something he’d expect a normal lycan would do. Was she warrior ranked?
What was a warrior ranked doing in his kitchen? Still, he stopped thinking as he was on the verge of passing out.
Jessika quickened her pace and nodded at the princess when she passed her. Laurel nodded back then sneaked to the guards quarters to check on them.
The door of Jade’s dining hall was barged in by Jessika. She froze on seeing all the officials in the room but she found her tongue and cried out. "The Alpha was attacked!"
Cade dashed to her immediately and took Stefan out of her shoulders. A tray of food fell down and Jessika gasped when she saw it was Sorren. "I told him!" His eyes were darkened on his brother and he looked scared.
She had to explain, Jessika spoke. "It was by a Lycan that attacked the hunters. It’s wolfsbane. I mean, I think so."
When she saw Sigma try to leave the room, she quickly added. "The Lycan was badly injured too and ran away."
A guard, kneeling by the door grabbed Jessika harshly. "And my squad. Please, what happened to my squad?"
Jessika frowned but understood he was worried, she answered. "They are fine after..."
Suddenly, the guard’s head flew out of his neck. It flew to the air and Jessika could only watch as the life left them.
Her eyes slowly moved to Beta Cade that stood before her and must have done that. "You dare harass her when you the one who brought this upon the Alpha?!"
Harass her? Jessika’s shoulder fell. He only grabbed her arm. She didn’t think it was enough to kill him. Seeing the lifeless body, she couldn’t help but blame herself.
She had flashbacks to how Stefan has handled a Lycan that killed so many guards. Indeed these Lycans were monsters, life and death were in their hands.
"What quantity was poured on him?"
Jessika pulled her eyes from Beta Cade to Prince Sorren who asked, she bowed her head. "I wasn’t there when it happened. A maid had called my attention but I think it’s liquid wolfsbane because of the marks of his body."
Stefan was laid on his brother’s body and Sorren gently dabbed cold water unto the burns. Sigma tried to blow in it but Sorren gestured for him to stop.
"Will thy just gape like a fool or rather bring ointments!" Sorren slapped his hand to the ground.
Jessika shrieked and bowed her head. "I-I’m sorry, Prince Sorren. T-Tell me what to bring and I’d get it immediately!"
She’d never seen the Prince lose his cool this much but then again, his older brother could get gravely damaged.
"No." Sorren said gently. "I don’t refer to you, young maiden. I refer to the stoned fool in our midst."
Jessika looked up, and that was when she noticed Lady Jade stoned on her seat. Was she the one Sorren referred to as stoned fool? Wasn’t she his future Luna?
"You suggested he go out there! Can’t you get help now he returned passed out and injured!" Cade snapped at her. "Or do you need orders like a dog!"
Jessika backed away in astonishment. Was it the future Luna they spoke to like that? They had no fear or respect for her at all?
The ’future Luna’ sprang from her seat. "H-How... How dare you speak to me that way, Cade! Won’t you blame the cook for not sending the maid to call us immediately!"
Would she only react to Cade and not Sorren? The cook smirked. Pathetic. So this was the true face of the Luna?
Jessika only involved a maid so it wouldn’t sound like she saw Stefan’s predicament yet hesitated before saving him. If she was asked for the maid that helped, she could mention the Princess and help her garner some favor too.
Jade glanced at the cook and noticed her demeaning smirk. She rushed to the girl but got blocked by Cade.
"Jade, that isn’t the way to the ointments. If you don’t get it, I’d put you in worse situations." Sorren advised calmly.
Jessika watched as the Luna shook in fear and anger. Her eyes were still on Jessika who couldn’t help but keep wearing her smirk.
So the Luna, that all the maids and cooks fell before, was just a whiny scared bitch backed up by the Alpha? Even the other officials held no respect for her.
Jade turned from her and left to get ointments. Jessika bowed her head. "I’d return to the guards now and help them treat the injured. Excuse me sirs..."
"Thank you."
Jessika looked up. "Ah... it’s no problem, Prince Sorren." Finally, she got their gratitude!
"And who was this maid that helped? You two would be handsomely rewarded." Sigma added.
Jessika made a small smile. "Her name is Laurel. She should be tending to the guards now." Sigma and Sorren turned to her on hearing the name.
Sorren smiled. "That’s fine. You can leave now."
The cook hurried away.
Cade sighed, stooping towards Sorren and the Alpha. "Jade! That bitch is yet back with the ointments."
"Sigma, drag her here."
Cade stared at Sorren, quite distraught. Drag Jade? Even if she was a loser, she was still the Alpha’s fiancée. "Are you sure? Jade would marry your brother eventually."
Sorren frowned. "Or not. I can’t keep putting up with her foolishness. There should be somebody else." There was somebody else. His brother’s true mate.
Sigma readily rushed out of the room. "I’d pull her here by her hair. Under your orders, Prince Sorren."
Cade worriedly watched Sigma leave. The kid was always so eager to beat someone up. Truly, the dynamics of the Alpha’s family was unique yet messed up.
