Chapter Four Hundred-Eight – A New Beginning
"Green Valleys would be the first then."
Sorren turned to him. Green Valleys and High Moon would be having exclusive trading alliance? Black Claws doesn’t have that yet despite being under High Moon.
He let it slide since Laurel was the one who set the stage for it. For the time being, Black Claws would also benefit from that trading alliance.
But ultimately, these made Green Valleys a really strong pack and in the future, Black Claws would have to completely leave them. Sorren sighed, he knew that’d happen and that’s why he’s trying to improve High Mountains to be the next Black Claws and survive on its own with Green Valleys influence.
Laurel agreed and glanced at Zeldris. "My knight would draft a contract later and send to you. I appreciate your compliance."
Asher looked at Zeldris and tilted his head. He didn’t have much memories of that knight. Was it yet another werewolf she saved from an unfortunate situation and let them tag along out of pity.
"Do you need a knight that you are stronger than? I can arrange one for you as proof—"
"Stay in your business." Sorren interrupted. "If there should be a change of officials in the Princess’s line up, it should be her decision and from our ranks."
Asher forced a smile, slowly picking up his fork. "I see..." he trailed off when he noticed Sigma looking at his hand on the fork intently, waiting for what he’d do with it. He calmly dropped it. "You shouldn’t speak for the Princess though. Even if she’s under you, she has her own animosity."
"He was speaking for his cousin, not me " Laurel waved her hand dismissively. "But I am not also interested in having a change of knight, more less taking any official from your ranks... unless it’s Nene though." Laurel remembered that she was quite easy to relate to and gave her so many girl tips that she never knew existed, she still didn’t know why she really wanted to dress her up back then but she didn’t complain.
Cousin? Asher glanced at the knight and he was flustered. That normal person was the cousin of Sorren, a Lycan Prince? He slowly felt resentment towards the young man. He had good looks so would be a family member, but being werewolf... Asher remembered Sorren was actually half Lycan. He finished his meal and dismissed himself. He took one look at Sigma, and smiled, before leaving.
Laurel left her seat when he left, she had finished her meal a long time ago and didn’t knows how to leave when he was still there. She wanted to go see Zara and she knew that he’d ask where she’s going and why she was going there. She had to be very careful so she’d find out what their deal had been.
She noticed Zeldris and Thales following her as she left. Thales didn’t want to tell her so she had to keep him far off, but she had already told Zeldris to draft a contract so he might want to leave her safety to Thales.
"Ah, Escanor! Um.... I’d go on a walk with him." She said when they got down and Escanor was still in the carriage asleep. She rushed to the carriage and tried to wake him up. He had spent last night with his cousins and allegedly played games and hunted till the next day. He couldn’t even join them for the meal with the King that he had been looking forward to.
"Escanor is asleep. Shouldn’t Zeldris return with him? I can take you everywhere." Thales suggested.
Laurel chuckled nervously. Why was he making sense when she wanted him to just play along? Zeldris entered the carriage and the rider rode it back to the cottage. Thales turned to Laurel and the Princess saw the mischievous smirk on his face. She face palmed. So he already knew her plan? Of course, she had exposed herself the other day so he’d probably never believe her. "So where are you actually going, Princess?"
Laurel folded her arms. If he just accepted to tell her everything then she’d forfeit the trip. "What deal did the King have with Lady Zara?" she gestured. "Tell me."
Thales smirk fell. That had been bothering her? Her curiosity was quite annoying sometimes. He lopped away. If he said it was a partying secret between him and Lady Zara, would she keep trying to know or just ask Zara herself? He exhaled. The latter was her possible action if she gets rejected from knowing again.
"Please, remember not to speak of this to anyone. Lady Zara didn’t want it to get to this." Thales pleased.
That response worried Laurel. Did that Asher make her do something utterly disgusting just to stop his own disgusting practices? Didn’t he really have a change of heart. "So its not a happy ending?"
Thales shrugged. "It’s only a happy ending if both parties truly needed it. It doesn’t really matter if others doesn’t so yes, in a way it’s a happy ending."
Laurel wasn’t sure what that meant. So Asher wanted it and Zara needed it. "What is this agreement they had?"
Thales faced the Princess and struggled to speak before finally exhaling and finding his tongue. He’d really not want to speak of this till he felt better but he shouldn’t act so sensitive.
"Lady Zara had always known that King Asher was her mate but because she didn’t want him, she employed my magical abilities to hide her scent."
Laurel had a straight face even if many other things ran in her head. Lady Zara and King Asher? That was so unlikely with the way that disliked and banter with each other, though Laurel remembered that Zara was the major offender. "Fated to the Moon Goddess type of mate?* She needed to know if it was the natural type or perhaps a betrothal made my their parents.
Thales shook his head. "They have the Moon Goddess blessing." It was odd to say that out loud but it was the painful truth. Lady Zara was blessed to be with someone else. "I see." Laurel rubbed her jaw. That sounded really surprising. Lady Zara had been fighting her fate all the while and finally surrendered to it when she found a way to change Asher. It occurred to Laurel that she was in a similar situation. Could accepting the mate bond between she and Stefan help them get closer and make him better? Was that what she needed since it was already what Stefan wanted? She didn’t know how to answer those questions so kept thinking.
Thales noticed her countenance. One of the reasons he couldn’t remember telling Zeldris about Sigma’s connection with the King was because Zeldris engaged him with the latest personal stake involving the Princess.
The Princess had been mated to Alpha Stefan.
Zeldris made his displeasure clear but Thales was still at loss of what to feel. He didn’t think he should go through the pain and stress of trying to fight fate and failing woefully. It’d be best to just let it happen.
"Why did she not want him before?" Laurel asked even if she could guess why. Still, Asher’s cruelty would never have affected her even if it went against her beliefs.
"Well, the Lady is quite stubborn and when she realized that her childhood rival was her mate, she naturally felt like she shouldn’t let him win." Thales smiled.
Truly, that had been the initial reason she stayed away from Asher when she found out that he was her mate. Then when he came into her life, she employed him to hide her scent and he also found reasons why Asher would make a horrible mate.
Thales felt guilty thinking about that. It almost felt like it was his discoveries that prolonged his Lady Zara from the happy life that she deserved, even if those reports were mainly true.
"Princess Laurel." He called when he saw she had spaces off again. "Now, that you know that your happiness was quite dependent on your mate, what will you do?"
Laurel’s eyes widened a bit, but she wasn’t very surprised that he knew who her mate was. Zeldris and Quincy did anyway. It’d only be a matter of time before Cara would tell more people too.
"There’s a curse attached to it that I can’t do anything about. A curse linked to me from Yudan that’d kill my mate if we be together." Laurel forced a smile. "Isn’t my own excuse more bothering."
Thales knitted his brows together. A curse from Yudan sounded familiar. "Didn’t that only happen to the male house of Yudan because one of them raped a witch?"
Laurel’s expression became flat again. Quincy didn’t say that part so he probably didn’t know. "Did you hear about it? I didn’t know there was a crime."
But that made sense, they had to be a reason that they were cursed. "Tell me more." She said when she saw Thales nod. They began walking down to the cottage.
