Chapter 392: The Date II
Chapter Three Hundred-Ninety-Two – The Date II
Stefan and Laurel reached a bridge and Laurel walked past it without any trouble, but Stefan paused. Why did Baxter not specify how high the bridge was from the river?
"Really?" Kai came to the surface. "Your height issues are going to show now, Alpha Stefan!"
Stefan closed his eyes as he cut the connection with his wolf again. Didn’t that mangy thing promise not to bother him?
"Are you okay?" Laurel asked half way across the bridge.
Stefan nodded quickly to hide his hesitations. He needed to do this without looking down. This was only a childhood trauma turned fear. "Go ahead. I’d meet you there."
Laurel hummed and turned to Marino who whispered something to her ears. Her eyes widened.
Stefan once told him how he fell into a river as a kid? That was such a dark tale to tell a kid. Was Stefan using her Marino as his therapist?
She turned to him and even if it wasn’t on his face, he was clearly hesitating. She returned back to the beginning of the bridge.
Stefan raised a brow. "Oh you can’t cross? Well, maybe we can find another route." He stepped back.
That’d be a perfect solution for him.
But then, Laurel held his arm and he froze. She was initiating physical touch and he was at lost at what to do now than play along.
"Let’s go. This is probably the shortest and only route you know. Let us not get lost." she said, pulling him into the bridge.
She noticed he stopped, then continued again, so she slowed down and searched her head for a topic to talk about while she walked him through the bridge.
She remembered and asked. "Was Sorren usually taken as a girl when he was young?" she guessed that his younger brother might be the only topic he wouldn’t feel tensed to speak about.
It actually worked as Stefan breathed out as he remembered fond memories of his childhood.
"Well, all who saw him knew that he was a boy. Sorren actually disliked it when he’s mistaken for a girl. Now he’s older, he ignores anyone who makes the mistake."
Laurel clicked her tongue. How could he hate it when there was so much emotional manipulation he could do with that face?
"Well, sucks to be him." She said sarcastically.
Stefan didn’t get the sarcastic edge and agreed. "I wished he had friends who could make him feel normal but he still likes his own company more than anything so I worry for him sometimes."
Laurel frowned. She shouldn’t have brought up the topic of that beautiful man. Now, his sensitive older brother would only speak about that.
She knew Sorren would always top anything in his brother’s life and she didn’t know to feel about it.
Not that she wanted to be more important but it’d be good to be the most important person in someone’s life.
She shook her head and gone were those thoughts. She hadn’t decided what becomes of she and Stefan so there was no need thinking of the most important to him.
It’s not a surprise that she wasn’t usually the most important to people anyway.
They reached the other end of the bridge and she exhaled, massaging her wrist that felt heavy by not supporting Marino’s weight with both hands.
Stefan took back his hand and touched where she held. She was quite considerate when she wanted to be.
He noticed Marino looking at him and smiled at the boy. It made his heart warm when the boy smiled back.
Laurel stopped at the end of the bridge and waited for Stefan to go on front. "So where next?"
Stefan looked at her left hand closed to him. Should he hold it? She might react or may not, but it was a step. He reached for it but at that moment, she placed it under Marino she was holding.
She turned to him when he noticed he was reaching for her. "Something wrong?" Did he want her to walk him to the place he had brought her to?
Stefan shook his head in dismissal and began walking in front. He clenched his fists and hoped for another chance.
The forest after the bridge was quite dense and had a misty air. Laurel kept Marino’s head on her shoulders so he wouldn’t breathe in much of the heavy air.
"What is the name of the pack? Did Baxter tell you?" she might recognize it as they surely come to trade with Green Valleys sometimes.
"Kleon Pack. Quite a simple name and Kleon are what their heads are called, not Alpha." Stefan hummed. "I think they also use a unique system to pick their next leaded and it isn’t monarchy."
Laurel nodded at those. Well, that’d be one thing that may have led to them not joining her father as they wouldn’t like being in a monarchy ruler ship suddenly.
They must be strong though to deny the protection of a strong kingdom. But good for them, after all that kingdom was flattened by a group of vengeful Lycans in one day.
Laurel exhaled when she was feeling bitter again. The object of her bitterness was taken her to a restaurant so she had to forget all those for a while no matter how hard that would be.
The mist cleared out to reveal tall trees and beyond it were cliffs and valleys that sloped downwards. Laurel didn’t know how to feel about this unique terrain that would be difficult to walk past.
She should change to her wolf to be able to move smoothly but, she exhaled. She dropped Marino on the ground and reached for Mira on Stefan’s body.
Stefan took a step back. Why was she suddenly taking her kids? Did the terrain trouble her? "Don’t worry, I can take her past, just try to keep up."
He jumped down the first downward slope. It was really steep and coming out would take effort.
Laurel shrugged on seeing his effort so walked back into the mist forest and took off her clothes to shift.
"Keep a distance from Stefan till we reach our destination and don’t hesitate to give me back control." She instructed her wolf she shifted.
Elma made a whimpering sound on being told to ignore her mate. She’d just have to make a run for it so she wouldn’t have to speak to him and so that Laurel would be able to change before he arrived.
The size of Elma had increased again and she was almost eight feet from the ground. She bent down to Marino and he stared at the form with wide eyes. If not that he knew it was Princess, he’d have run away. Elma put her clothes on her back and bent down for Marino to climb on top her.
When he was settled on top, she sped out of the forest.
Stefan waited down the slope with Mira who touched the grass, as he kept her down. The moment a huge wolf sped out of the forest, he became alert and held unto Mira.
He calmed down when he got Laurel’s scent from the wolf. "Elma..." he remembered the wolf’s name.
He felt Kai getting closer to the surface and left him to that as long as he wouldn’t scold him for anything. "Well, maybe shifting to wolf would be better for her."
He exhaled, picking Mira up. But the distance Elma covered over a short time was impressive but was it needed? It felt like she didn’t even want to walk by his side unlike Laurel. Perhaps Elma had a special issue with him?
"You can’t be so sure. Don’t have resentment towards Elma because of your mate." Kai defended immediately.
Stefan chuckled. "Elma is also my mate. Why will I hate her?" he ran through the plains holding Mira closely.
The little girl didn’t care and kept on rubbing the little hairs on a weed she found, while in Stefan’s arms.
Elma stopped at a lake below the valley and seeing Stefan was still far away, she shifted back to Laurel.
Laurel quickly wore her clothes and went to the lake to dress her hair. Marino rolled down with her and she caught him before he fell into the lake.
He began laughing and she smiled at him. "Princess wolf is pink." He pointed out.
Laurel made an ’hmm’ sound even if the right color was blue. "It’s pretty, isn’t it?"
Marino nodded with all his might and Elma felt better, after being told not to be with her mate.
"Don’t worry, Elma. Once I settle my own feelings, I’d give you a good answer about what happens to us from here." Laurel assured.
Elma sighed and returned to the back of her head. Laurel left the lake after dressing her hair and braiding Marino’s head again.
She looked back and saw that Stefan was really taking his time to come, while Mira stuck some weeds on his hair.
