Chapter Hundred-Eighty-Five – Her Plan
Stefan sighed and raised the new reports that came. "I asked Silent River pack if the illness had reached them and while this wasn’t a direct reply from their leader, whoever wrote this meant that it hadn’t. In other words, this isn’t a seasonal illness and was something caused by our farms or something else."
He glanced at Sorren because he was the only one denying it being from the farms. Stefan couldn’t place if it was him trying to defend his beloved farms or if he truly thought that’s not where the problem came from.
"Please wake him up." He told Sigma. Sigma chuckled and gently rocked the Prince to wake.
Laurel narrowed her eyes at the report that came from Silent River. The Alpha said it hadn’t been a direct report from them but it conveyed the message.
What had happened that Sir Darren wasn’t able to write a reply himself? Had he travelled? Then did it mean something was actually going down at Damancas and High Moon Kingdom?
She reached for the letter but Baxter pulled it away from her. "It’s nothing of importance, Princess. The letter only gave a positive response."
Laurel took her hand back. If it’s nothing of importance than why couldn’t she just see it?
Stefan took it from Baxter and when Laurel had the faintest hope that’d he’d give it to her, he slid it under a pile of files and addressed Sorren. "You are sure that the farms have nothing to do with this?"
"They are innocent." Sorren said amidst yawns.
Stefan sighed, rubbing his temples. Again, he sounded like he was only trying to defend the plants and not because he thought the illness didn’t come from there.
"Did you change your fertilizer?" Laurel asked.
The rest turned to her because it was the very first contribution she was making.
Sorren hummed. "I didn’t change mine but I wouldn’t know what other farmers do in their farms."
"Well, as the one overseeing the ongoing at High Mountains, shouldn’t you keep a little eye on them?" Laurel tilted her head.
Sorren looked away.
Laurel continued. "High Mountains is a sensitive land in the mountains and depending on the fertilizer used, it could have a negative reaction. If I think of it, this has happened before."
Sorren’s sleepiness left his eyes. "In the past?"
"Yes." Laurel replied. "I’d have to ask the survivors at Silent River Pack for information and hope they’d be willing to give it to the ones who took their land."
Sorren smirked. She was back to being antagonistic, wasn’t she? "The illness will kill many and you know it."
"I am not the one who has the key to saving them, am I? Also the people might think the deaths wouldn’t compare to the one that happened to them. After all, these ones aren’t even from their land." Laurel left the chair she sat on. "I’d pay a visit to Silent River pack. If you have an adorable spokesman that could beg on your behalf, then send him."
Sorren sighed and looked at Stefan. Stefan nodded. They’d have to send Chris to handle it for them, he’d been successful before and could still do more.
Laurel left the table and matched out with Zeldris.
As long as those lycans indirectly give an apology to the survivors of High Mountains, then that’d be one step to reconciliation. It wasn’t that easy but it was an attempt.
"Are you sure it’s the fertilizers?"
Laurel shrugged. "No."
Zeldris stopped following her. She wasn’t sure yet she had spoken so brazenly and even pointed fingers at all the officials there that were involved in the raid?
"Then has an incident like this happened before?"
"I wouldn’t be sure since I was locked up back then, would I? But Lena mentioned something like this." Laurel smiled. "Either ways, it’s either it works or not. Sorren knows that the problems came from the farms but is prolonging the solution for some reasons I don’t know."
What if the infection started from his farm? She shook her head. Those were the problems of those other packs.
She just had to make sure the sickness doesn’t hit Green Valleys and to treat anyone with symptoms. Green Valleys had always been healthier than other packs.
"Princess Laurel, you have a letter." A maid hurried to her, holding a letter from Damancas. Laurel’s heart skipped a beat before she stretched her hand to take the letter.
The maid left afterwards and Laurel stared at the letter for a while before going to her seat to read it. "Oh, Zeldris, please watch the twins for me. Thanks."
Zeldris nodded and hurried towards her room. Laurel quickly opened the letter and read its content and her heartbeat slowly normalized.
It was only a request asking to be informed of Thales return. It was definitely a worrying message but not as worrying as she had envisioned.
This meant that Thales hadn’t informed Damancas of his movements too. "Well, I’d keep notice of his movements from now onwards when he returns. I’m sure he went to do something that’d protect werewolves and Lycans as well because of his connection with Lady Zara."
The only danger would be what the King would do to him if he saw him but Laurel wanted to bet that Lady Zara wouldn’t let her friends to be bullied by the King.
Laurel had seen first hand that she stood up to that King quite openly and it was refreshing.
She left her seat to go to the room but stopped when Lead Warrior Baxter walked into her hall. Her expression turned sour as she wasn’t informed of his visit.
"What is it?"
"I wanted to apologize in case I offended you by not showing you the content of the letter. I noticed your tone and mood had become foul after that." He said.
Laurel chuckled and folded her arms. Apologize? That didn’t sound like an apology at all. He had only came to her hall to accuse her of being foul-mouthed.
He had some guts. "You did not kill the people of High mountains so I’d cut you some slack but next time you come here to question my attitude, I’d show you the anger they feel towards does that did."
A frown came to Baxter’s face as he heard the words of the Princess. Did she pick a fight with every passing person? "I had really come to apologize—"
"Not with that tone, you didn’t." Sorren walked with into the hall. "You totally sound accusatory with that."
A maid was rushing in to tell the Princess of their arrival but seeing the two already with her, the maid sighed and went back.
Prince Sorren pushed Baxter aside to pass. "And I’m not siding Laurel, she was mean today, but you don’t just know how to talk to ladies."
Baxter’s frowning face shifted to him. Who couldn’t speak to ladies? As a self-acclaimed ladies man those words didn’t seat well with him. "Why did you follow me here?"
Sorren looked around the place before looking at Baxter. "I didn’t know you own the streets to this place." he rolled his eyes.
Laurel sighed when another one arrived without permission and now they were arguing within themselves without telling her why they came? Did someone say she was handing out treats here?
She returned to her seat and crossed her legs. "What do you want? Be clear with it."
"Nothing." Sorren made himself comfortable on a couch
Laurel’s face squeezed when she saw him fall on the couch. It was a new one she got for the twins to sleep on whenever they wanted to stay with her and not in the room. She didn’t appreciate another who wasn’t her child laying on it. "Sickness is ridden on High Mountains, I have to stay away or I might get sick too." Sorren said with pity on his face.
Laurel and Baxter clicked their tongues at the same time, and having the same thoughts. Such a selfish bastard Sorren was.
Baxter bowed before taking his leave.
Laurel returned her gaze to Sorren on the couch. She couldn’t just leave with him here or he’d begin moving around and see things she wouldn’t want him seeing.
Things about the curse that she wanted to conceal on her head yet ended up writing it down.
"You are sure you don’t want anything?" she asked, leaving her seat. "A meal or something?"
He might get tired after a meal and fall deeply asleep.
"Will you give me a good meal?" he turned to her. "Without it being poisoned or something?"
Laurel smirked. Was he testing her? "If you want it then take the chance, will you? Should I or no?"
"No, I’m too young to die." He laid back on the chair and stretched, acting like he’d continue his sleep there.
Laurel left for her room since she was worried about the twins.
