Chapter 381: At The Cave
Chapter Three Hundred-Eighty-One – At the Cave
Laurel knew she might regret it later if she didn’t accept her mate even after he had redeemed himself.
Her hands clenched when the image of Lena passed through her mind. How the hell would he redeem the lives he took anyway?
Those he killed. Those he hurt. He couldn’t never undo any of that. Would he even have had an ounce of guilt if she wasn’t his mate?
He was only being this way because he wanted her and didn’t want to get rejected. Her hand clenched on the armrest she kept it on. That Alpha didn’t deserve her.
Quincy watched as the Princess’ eyes darkened, she must be fighting with herself and he needed to give her space. Her future happiness depended on her decision.
The Alpha might also do something dangerous if the object of his affection didn’t want him and while all of Green Valleys would be ready to defend their Princess, it’d be much better if nothing happened.
He left the hall shortly and Elma came to the surface.
"We are still eighteen, you don’t need to act like you are being told to be with him right now." The wolf said.
It seemed to snap Laurel out of the haze she was in and she exhaled. "That also means that our mate could also be able to redeem himself, doesn’t it?"
She chuckled. Elma had always been her mate’s supporter since day one. His crimes were literally non-existent in her opinion.
"That’s not true." Elma countered as she sensed Laurel’s thought. "I blame him for his crimes as much as you. It was a revenge plot for what father did. If he’s willing to put all that behind him, why can’t we?"
Laurel said nothing but a sigh. It was so much easier to say than to act on. The curse was still an obstacle, as well as how her people would react to it.
Also the King of Lycans was a lunatic she didn’t want to have more to do with and being with Stefan would mean having to be loyal to the King.
Stefan didn’t even know where he stood if it came to opposing the Lycan King that wanted werewolves dead.
The Princess rubbed her face as many thoughts ran through her mind. Her decision on what to do with Stefan would come later.
At the moment, she needed to make Green Valleys rise again or if anything happened between them, she might become dependent on him.
She left her seat and strolled out. She had to pay one last visit to Frida and stop her from doing anything that could affect Green Valleys and Sir Darren.
Then she’d see Sir Darren and ask for updates about the drugs, what the Lycan King was up to, and what Damancas wanted to do about it.
The guards at the border greeted her properly as she passed but she didn’t look at them. Her temper had been terrible recently so she wanted to stay as calm as much as possible.
It felt lonely not having Zeldris’s talkative self with her as she strolled out and she smiled, thinking of how shocked he must’ve been when he heard who her mate was. He obviously disliked the Alpha.
Laurel reached the cave and took off the warm cloak she had brought for Frida. The weather was getting cold and she knew Frida lived in a cold place.
She shouldn’t be caring about the werewolfess who acted like the world moved by her will, but she was the leader of her pack so had to be generous to even her.
Laurel huffed proudly as she thought of that. "I hope she’s in there to receive my bountiful grace—" she froze, when she caught his scent inside the cave.
He noticed her and turned to her, locking eyes. Laurel took few steps back and cursed. He must’ve come to the cave because Sorren told him about getting attacked.
Laurel cleared her throat. "Good day, Alpha—"
"I told you that you can call me Stefan when we’re alone." The Alpha reminded. He turned to a carving on the cave wall. "Are you here for any special reason?"
Laurel tapped her feet. This was getting bad. Sorren met her here the last time and now his brother, they’d definitely realize that there’s someone she’s trying to meet.
If that someone was from Green Valleys, then the person who attacked Sorren would be from Green Valleys, their captive pack.
The warriors would begin being hostile to her people and her warriors. "There’s only one thing to do then." She muttered to her and calmly took steps to run off.
Chances that’d he’d come to see her in her quarters were low, and if he sent any body, she’d just twist her answer with sprinkles of guilt tripping.
As she stepped back, and turned, her heart jumped when he sped in front of her. "Laurel, calm down, if you don’t want to tell me it’s fine."
She took more steps back, feeling double-crossed. Now he’d figured out she had something to hide. Why did she even trail this far again?
Oh, yes because his younger brother told her officials something shocking and they ended up making uncomfortable for it, guilty even.
"Alpha, did you—"
"Stefan." He corrected. "Yes?"
Laurel’s eyes became lidded. He should stop calling out the Stefan thing, she would rather call him Alpha. "Did you know Sorren had been telling others that you are mated to me?"
She didn’t know what type of reaction she wanted from him when she asked, but she kept her eyes on him, to see any emotion that flashed through his face.
Stefan’s heart was beating erratically at the thought of being in a secluded area alone with his mate’s. Maybe those thoughts were being a bit too wild but he couldn’t keep them from not playing in his head.
"I have no idea he was doing that." A smile came to his lips. "It’s not like he’s spreading lies though. Do you have a problem with it—"
"Yes." She answered since she was asked. "My officials are taking it too hardly and are worried for my future. They believe you’d be violent to me when rejected."
That broke something in Stefan and he held the wall. Laurel froze, realizing how wrong she phrased that.
"I-I mean, I’m not saying that I’m going to react you but I don’t like you like that, so they think you’d be bad to me till I do, like force me to..." she rubbed her head, realizing she had began to ramble.
Stefan regained his composure and forced a smile. At least, she made it clear that she wouldn’t be rejecting him.
While it hurt that she didn’t like him, it’d be unrealistic for her to like him when she barely interacted with him, and be knew he had no idea how to go about it.
All the romantic relationships he had had been started by the other party and he only went along with it.
"I know your people’s opinions matter a lot to you and you want to do what’s best for them..." he didn’t know where he was going with that but went with the flow. "... but a mate isn’t a bad thing. Maybe I am not the best choice for you but you mean so much to me already."
Laurel opened her lips to say something but closed it back. There was no need bringing up his past sins since Elma already said that he’s trying to redeem himself.
She didn’t want to keep the environment quiet. "I-I see... I appreciate... the... um... yeah." She looked away.
Her eyes spotted the carving on the wall. It’s definitely Frida’s work. She glanced at Stefan and then at the carving. She exhaled.
Frida should keep her murderous intent in her head and not carve a warrior stabbing a lycan with a sword on the innocent caves. It was obviously a fresh painting so she had been there recently.
"I came last time and met Sorren so I came strolling this again and met you now. I guess this can’t be a good strolling point for me." She forced a chuckle.
She hoped he’d buy the excuse. She looked up and found him smiling at her and looked away again. Did that mean he could see through her excuse?
She sighed and wrapped the cloak over her head. She still had a long while before she would get bothered by what the future held for them.
She also has to tell him about the curse at some point but it’d be okay. If she decided to be with him, then they’d find a solution together.
She noticed he stayed back in the cave and a part of her felt saddened that he didn’t follow her. She smacked her face and walked faster.
Her heart and her brain were still too young and inexperienced to be clashing with one another. Away from the cave, she curved towards Silent River Pack.
There would definitely give her more peace of mind than going back to the quarters were Quincy would be watching her for Goddess-knows-what.
