Chapter Thirty-Eight – Rebirth
Valkyrie chuckled, gaining Cade’s attention.
He pointed at her. "You should keep the princess in check. You belong to me and I could kill you when I like."
Laurel frowned. Was he transferring aggression from her to Valkyrie? She responded on Valkyrie’s behalf. "We’re all under the Alpha’s command, We won’t be stupid."
Cade scoffed before walking away. When he was gone, Laurel let out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding since she began speaking with him. That had gone smoothly.
"You managed to advert that one." Valkyrie exhaled. "It will be best if it doesn’t happen again though."
Laurel nodded. "I’d do my best. Hopefully, the guards won’t..." she trailed off when she was hugged from behind her. She turned to see the teenage girl.
Her dress was wet. "D-Did you wet yourself?"
The girl looked up, her face, wetter than her dress. "T-Thank you, Princess. I-I thought I’d die. T-Thank you."
The corner of Laurel’s lips rose. "Hmm. I’m glad I could do something for you. You’re very welcome."
For once, there was someone who felt gratitude towards her. She helped someone and felt good about it. She felt like a Princess and not just in title.
The other maids began trooping out of their rooms. "You got really lucky, Lisa. You’re always lucky." one said.
It made Laurel smile, but the girl, Lisa, looked downcast. "It seems. I’m really lucky but it’d soon run out."
What did that mean? Laurel patted her head. "Don’t hope for something like that to happen..."
"No, it really will." Lisa wiped her face. "I could have died few days ago but luckily, there was no one for me to kill to be accepted by Prince Sorren. We were an odd number. That was how I survived. Luckily also, no one killed me. I just keep getting lucky." Tears streamed down her eyes.
Kill to be accepted by Prince Sorren? It didn’t make sense to Laurel but the girl’s current emotional state made it hard for her to ask what she meant.
Night soon came and Laurel found a lunchbox at the door of her room. Why didn’t Lia just send it inside? She tried pushing the door open.
"I said no one should come in. Are you guys hard at hearing, huh?"
Laurel frowned. "Frida?" Did she finally pick her room to stay in? It will be difficult for both of them. She walked into the room, holding her lunchbox. "You could’ve at least let the girl drop my food on my bed."
Frida didn’t meant her gaze. "Shut up. Because you played with words and made the Beta not kill you doesn’t mean you’re worth shit. Don’t get ahead of yourself, idiot!"
Such vile words! She didn’t even brag about anything. Laurel shook her head. "You’re a ball of gloom. As I said, it’d be good if you learn respect or make friends."
"Both aren’t happening." Frida laid on her bed. "Friends aren’t worth it. I give respect to who it’s due. Work for it."
She’s so difficult. Laurel ignored her and laid down on her bed. The softness of the mattress made her sink in, feeling warm. Maybe she’d ask Valkyrie if she could switch Frida with one of the warriors so that her life will only be train, eat and train, with no ’handling Frida’ in between.
"How did you feel though?" Frida broke the silence.
Laurel was done with her meal and dressing her bed. She didn’t want a conversation with Frida but was curious on what sparked her interest to speak after minutes passed.
"How did you feel when our Kingdom was raided but then it meant you wouldn’t be give to one of those old Alphas?" Frida asked, sitting up. "Were you glad or not?"
How dare she ask that? Wasn’t the answer obvious? Or what kind of person did Frida think she was? "I’d happily be given to an old man than watch all those innocents die!" Laurel snapped.
At least, Lena would be able to visit her wherever she was. She wouldn’t have known the pain of being hurt by her own mate. Her kingdom and the packs it comprised of would still be active now.
War was never an option, even if it meant she lived unhappily. At least, at some point, in her life, she would bear children to love. She could make friends with the maids in her new home.
It would be bad but not the worst. Her current situation was a worst case scenario. If not, by luck or curse, she became Stefan’s mate and Sorren protected her, there was no way she’d have protected herself, or teenage Lisa, from all these.
Heck, she won’t even live long enough and Cade might have dropped her with warriors who’d rape her to death.
There were so many better scenarios that would have happened if she was married off to a old man instead.
"I can’t believe you’d ask that but then, it meant you knew I was being sold off, right?" Laurel turned to Frida.
Her red hair was all over her face, covering her eyes.
"Are you asleep already?" Laurel sighed. She asked a question that made her thoughts run wide, only to fall asleep? Such a troublesome girl.
Frida cleared her throat. "Since you went through all the shit, you should try to let it make you strong."
Was that a word of encouragement? Laurel looked up.
"I mean, it might seem quite impossible for a wimp like you but do your best. For better or worse, those stupid maids look up to you... somewhat." Frida shrugged.
Couldn’t she drop a compliment without sarcasm or a decorative insult? "I didn’t plan to get their admiration. I just wanted to stay here in peace. It was better than the prison." Laurel laid back in the bed.
"Hmm. I’d prefer the prison over here though but that’s just me." Frida turned to the wall.
Laurel faced the other way. She had no idea what she was talking about. There was another wave of silence.
"And about knowing that you were about to be sold off... yeah, I knew. My mother was actually worried though... worried that you’d be given to a groomer."
Laurel clenched her jaw. Couldn’t she shut up and go to sleep? "Any man that’d take a girl my age is a groomer already. Is that what your mother should be worried about?"
She couldn’t remember having a proper conversation with the Beta’s wife. She should have been her mother figure but Laurel avoided her because the lady avoided her too.
"Well, you asked so I answered. No one cared about you so take this as your rebirth and work hard." Frida yawned. "I’d stop talking now."
"Please do." Laurel frowned.
Taking this chance as her rebirth? Those words stuck in her head and she pondered about it, even till her sleep.
