Chapter Thirty-Seven – Protect

"Eh...you think I’m ugly?" Laurel asked. Those were really bold words from a man with his face.

The warrior tsked. That wasn’t the reaction he expected from someone he slapped. Annoyed, he pushed her back.

"You bitch! Yes, you’re ugly. I’m going to teach you what happens to ugly girls." He began to unbuckle his belt.

Laurel’s eyes darkened. He was going to teach her what happened to ugly girls? Then why unbuckle his belt?

"It better be that you’re trying to hit me with the belt you’re removing. Because if you’re actually trying to take off your trouser to..."

"Eh? And so what?" another warrior laughed, taking off his shirt. "Beta Cade let us play around with the maids that day. He should have brought us the princess too."

Laurel’s mind immediately went to the memories she has recalled that say at the prison. Indeed, Cade nearly took her to the warriors as a play thing.

Who knew how many young girls they abused that day? So they were one of the warriors. The maid finished sweeping and held unto her broom tightly.

"Princess, let’s run away from here." She cried. "Let’s run to Prince Sorren. He’d save us."

Prince Sorren? Laurel frowned. What made the girl think Sorren would save her from being raped?

Sorren could decide to protect her, as his brother’s mate but not the maid. This was their fight.

"You aren’t going anywhere." The third warrior advanced to the maiden. "You two are going to make us happy."

Laurel immediately drew lunged the sword at the man before her, piercing his sides. Her claws flew out and grabbed the other warrior by his neck. The last warrior was bare bodied and charged at her but the maid suddenly began bombarding him with hits from her broom. "Let. Us. Be. Leave. Us. Alone."

It gave Laurel time. She lunged at the warrior, who she deemed the strongest, and sent her claws into his laps. She tore her claws out, sending flesh and blood to the air.

He was pinned to the wall with his sword so could only bear the pain. She kicked the other one repeatedly, leaving the maid to the last one.

At that moment, she felt Valkyrie close and immediately mind linked. "Valkyrie, open the door!" The door to the entrance was forced open.

The maids inside gasped at the sight before them. Laurel pulled the maid and ran past the door. Before she moved, her eyes caught sight of someone on the window. Her room’s window. "Frida?"

Valkyrie shut the door behind them immediately. She shouted. "Princess, what’d you do! How did that happen!"

Laurel understood that this shouldn’t have happened, but she held the hand of the maid tightly. "Those men tried to rape this girl while she worked. I couldn’t just do nothing."

The other maids whispered amongst themselves, while some nodded in agreement. Valkyrie’s heavy breathing slowed down, she looked at the girl, whose face was wet with tears. The girl should be fifteen, barely an adult.

"Beta Cade will come here. Do you think he’d buy that reason?" Valkyrie’s voice was low.

Laurel frowned. She’d been looking forward to a rematch with Cade. But for now, she knew she couldn’t take him. "I have reasons that might persuade him."

She noticed Frida walk out of her room and her frown deepened. If that bitch was watching the whole time, couldn’t she have lend a helping hand?

"I hope you do." Valkyrie marched out.

Laurel finally let go of the girl. Her head was down. "Thank you, your highness."

"Hmm. You could ask a warrior, amongst us, to follow you while you sweep. Those guards wouldn’t dare to touch you then." Laurel said, hopefully.

She just had to wait for Cade. He was bound to come. Either he or Sorren. But then, Sorren didn’t like violence so he wouldn’t want to settle fights either.

Few hours later, after Laurel finished another tenth lap of running, she noticed Cade marching through the entrance. All the maids went inside, leaving only she and Valkyrie.

"The Princess and some teenage girl. Come out now!" Cade barked. Laurel didn’t feel frightened in his presence. Could it be because she got stronger?

"No, you got used to his presence because you spent time with Sorren and Sigma who have close ranks with him." Elma countered.

Laurel nodded. That was still good. At least, she wouldn’t chicken out while facing him. She walked out, while feeling the eyes of the maids watching her from their rooms.

"Who brought you in here? I sent only four females here." Cade stared down at her.

Four? Laurel remembered Lia saying so. It was Valkyrie and two warriors. And then Frida? She must be the last one since Lia mentioned that she might room with her as she was yet to get a room.

"You know I wouldn’t come here by myself. The Alpha must have permitted it." Laurel said. She remembered that Sorren told Stefan to use his name as an excuse instead so she quickly added. "Actually, Sorren brought me here himself."

"Sorren?" Cade frowned. "How dare you speak his name so casually like you’re friends!"

Well, they were anything but friends, still adding a Prince all the times was hectic. Laurel sighed. "Well, whatever. You now know who brought me here."

The tone she spoke with, made Valkyrie fear for her life. The other maids, watching, felt the same way.

Cade already knew she was sharp tongued. "Since he brought you here, I’d ignore you."

He didn’t want another argument with Sorren. "Where’s the teenage girl!" He barked, looking at the rooms. "I’m sure Sorren wouldn’t mind me killing that one."

Kill? Laurel came before him as he advanced towards the rooms. Valkyrie tried to hold her back but she gestured for her to pause.

"Prince... Sorren, right, is currently in charge of all the maids, here, including me. The warriors who reported to you wasted your time because they were the ones who tried to play with maids belonging to Prince Sorren."

"What?" Cade folded his arms. "What are you saying!"

"Yea, what the hell are you saying? You make it seem like Prince Sorren is our owner." Elma hissed.

Laurel wasn’t sure of what she was saying either but she’d try anything to save that girl from being killed.

"What I mean is, those guards harassed the maid. A maid Prince Sorren assigned to serve in the Alpha’s palace. Is that not an insult to both Prince Sorren and the Alpha?" Laurel raised her brow.

Cade stared intently at her. She definitely had a way with words. "So that’s why you hurt them? You hurt the warriors assigned to the Alpha’s palace?"

Was he trying to use her words against her? Laurel wore a smile. "I only tried to protect the dignity of the Prince and Alpha. How dare those guards try to touch a maid under the Alpha’s banner? They should be punished, right?"

Valkyrie chuckled lowly, gaining Cade’s attention.

He pointed at her. "You better keep this princess in check. You and the other three belong to me and I could kill you when I like."

Was he transferring the threat? Laurel responded on Valkyrie’s behalf. "We are all under the Alpha’s command, aren’t we? So of course, we wouldn’t do anything stupid."

Cade scoffed before walking away.
