Chapter 374: Soft Spot

Chapter Three Hundred-Seventy-Four – Soft Spot

Stefan had a quizzical expression as he looked at his Beta. Why did the King of Lycan’s Queen concern him and his pack? Why did the Elder have to come here for that?

"How does it concern us?" he asked directly.

Cade rubbed his neck, not wanting to say it directly. His Alpha would definitely not like the answer so it’d be best he figured it out himself.

"Actually, the warriors at High Moon Kingdom had seen her and were the ones who spread the rumors. The Elder was disappointed to not see her at Sigma’s birthday celebration but said he’d encourage the King to go ahead with a wedding because the Kingdom needed a new Queen."

Stefan kept on pulling blanks. How would High Moon Kingdom getting a Queen have anything to do with him? "Please be clear, who does the King want as a—"

And then it hit him. His Laurel? She’s the only one who had paid a visit to the King and had the qualifications to be his Queen.

He felt Kai stir up in him and his expression changed. "Princess Laurel is a werewolfess."

He didn’t want the King to be discriminatory but his hatred for werewolves had been putting Stefan at ease whenever the King dealt with Laurel.

Was this the King’s decision or that Elder was projecting? And how could the lycan warriors assume the only female to visit the King and stay a week with him was a potential queen? Actually, Stefan could see why they’d think so.

He ran his had through his hair. Laurel would never accept it and he’d never let her go, but it’d be a problem if the Lycan King decided to pull his leg and ask for her against her will. He was known used to doing things like that.

Beta Cade studied his Alpha’s reaction to that and regretted bringing it up. He didn’t like it but his Alpha must’ve a soft spot for that Princess.

Lead Warrior Baxter had been hammering it in his head and since the Alpha didn’t kill her and Sorren had been nice to her, Beta Cade had begun to think it’d be why.

"The Elder didn’t say anything about the King agreeing to it anyway. The old man is under the assumption that the King actually likes Laurel like that, but it’s not true."

Stefan looked up and stared into space for a while. They were many eligible daughters at High Moon Kingdom, why would the Elder be interested in making the Queen a foreigner? That was heavily suspicious.

Also he had come himself to meet the Queen so could he have ulterior motives? Perhaps, if he led her to the throne of a Queen, he thought he’d be able to use her?

It’s even more hilarious since it’s Laurel they’re talking about. She’d never let herself be used by anybody. Sometimes it felt like she didn’t even need his protection.

"Well, since it’s all assumption on the Elder’s part, we shouldn’t worry about it for now. The King wouldn’t feel that way for a werewolfess and Laurel would reject it."

Beta Cade forced a smile and nodded. Princess Laurel wouldn’t even want a Lycan due to her hatred for them, it made Cade worry for the Alpha’s feelings towards her.

If the Alpha really felt strongly for her then many things made sense, including Jade’s sudden actions, she might’ve realized that the Alpha no longer liked her.

But attacking the cook Jessika and the Alpha later were still preposterous actions that made little meaning but Cade understood why she felt alone.

Also Sorren leaving for High Moon while Princess Laurel had been taken hostage by the King was surprising but if it was to protect someone his brother liked, then Sorren might not be so heartless.

It made Cade wonder if he could speak directly with the Alpha about such matters. He didn’t like Jade, but Laurel seemed to be a worse candidate for a Luna.

But as he’d have done with Jade, all he could do was accept it as long as his Alpha was happy with his decision.

Cade also wondered when the Alpha started having these feelings for the Princess. She hadn’t been kind to him, and he left her all the while in the prison so he probably didn’t like her then.

Could it be after she reclaimed Green Valleys? Was the Alpha smitten by that? He didn’t think he’d be attracted to intelligence. Then how did Jade happen?

"Um... Cade?"

Cade snapped from his daze and focused his eyes on the Alpha that watched him. Had he been in a daze while looking at the Alpha?

The Alpha’s expression confirmed his suspicions. He looked away. "I’m sorry. I was thinking of something."

Stefan worried if he said something wrong concerning the matter with Laurel and the Lycan Alpha King. Cade looked like he wanted to say something but kept them to himself.

Stefan didn’t know if he should probe him to ask the questions or respect the hesitation that made him not ask.

"Alpha, you wouldn’t want Princess Laurel to be the Queen of High Moon Kingdom, would you?" Cade asked.

Stefan couldn’t reply. His answer would raise more questions and he didn’t know if he should tell his Beta about his mate bond with the Princess.

Cade was loyal but he must dislike the Princess and Stefan wouldn’t want to force an opinion on him.

"Didn’t that mean she’d leave her pack for me to handle? We’re gaining a lot from her presence so it’d be best to let her stay here." He tried to sound as flat as possible.

Cade hummed and leaned on the wall. Did that mean the Alpha only had interest in her because she’s intelligent and it benefitted their pack?

"As the Queen of High Moon Kingdom, it’d be more benefits for us, wouldn’t it? She’d want the prosperity of her pack and we’d gain from that as well."

The response stirred Stefan and he hid his frown by looking down. Did his Beta mean he couldn’t give her the prosperity of her pack?
