Chapter 357: Curse

Chapter Three Hundred-Fifty-Seven – Curse

Quincy felt better after sleeping on a soft bed for three days straight. The wolves at Yudan really worked hard for nothing, they didn’t even know how good soft bed felt.

He had been running and stopping and starving so much while coming to Green Valleys so this felt like the reward for all that. His wolf was pleased with the outcome.

The weather at Yudan was many times better than at Green Valleys but it was nothing he couldn’t get used to.

He touched his cheeks and didn’t feel any scar on his face, thankfully, it disappeared. That lycan was Beta ranked so a really powerful ointment must’ve been used to remove the scars from his face.

He rolled out of bed to take his first walk after waking up but it was at the same time that Zeldris barged into the room with excitement.

Quincy flinched and tried to return to sleep. Zeldris slowly backed away. "Sorry, I thought this was Escanor’s room." He looked around and sighed. "And you feel better now?"

Quincy peeked from under the sheets and nodded. "The Princess didn’t cause trouble because of that, right?"

Zeldris hummed with raised brows. Why’d he think she’d cause trouble because of him? They weren’t close yet.

He knew the Princess actually caused trouble for his sake but in a way, it’s because the Alpha kept being nosey.

After all, she didn’t attack Beta Cade who was the primary offender and only told the Alpha to stay out of his business, as he should.

The incident with the guard could be due to the guard’s exhaustion so it wasn’t anything. "No, she didn’t cause trouble. It’s fine." He saw the relief wash over Quincy.

Didn’t the young man want the princess to worry about him? Zeldris couldn’t place his intentions for being here, and knowing him, it should be deeper than ’for fun’.

He couldn’t have walked through valleys of death and deserts of nothingness to come here for fun.

If anything, Zeldris really disliked people who do dangerous things ’for fun’ when those things could claim the lives of others. The King of High Moon was such.

He had heard from Lisa that Prince Sorren was also that way and once massacred half the maidens at the palace for fun but Zeldris was sure Lisa had a fever dream.

Sorren must care about life too much to do that.

"Let’s go out. The Princess might get visited by a Lead Warrior of Black Claws today. I’m very busy so stay by her side." Zeldris pleaded. "I don’t usually do this."

Quincy grumbled a bit. He only woke up and he already had a chore? Couldn’t he stroll a bit and meet the beautiful ladies and men of Green Valleys?

"Don’t you dare grumble." Zeldris smiled as he pulled him by the hand. "I wanted Escanor to do it instead but he had been hiding from me, for some reasons."

Zeldris noticed he easily towered over Quincy’s small frame and the Knight began to second guess entrusting the Princess’s safety to him.

Well, worse comes to worse, he’d shift and shock the lycan enough for the Princess to make her escape.

"How old are you though?" he asked as they reached the hall the Princess was in, with the twins. "I’m nineteen."

"Twenty-four soon."

There was a cough and Zeldris fell to the ground. There was an exaggerated gagging and he acted like he passed.

Laurel snapped her head to the door and she stared at Quincy. She heard that, but couldn’t believe that.

That small body housed a twenty-four year old? Did he say it for comedic effect? His straight face said otherwise.

Zeldris forced himself to crawl towards the Princess and dramatically laid by her side. The little twins laughed at his drama and climbed his body, pinching him.

"Zeldis is dead!" Marino yelled in victory and poked the Knight’s head with the small wooden swords he held.

Little Mira concentrated on pinching any skin that wasn’t covered with cloth. Zeldris regretted falling.

Laurel dragged her eyes from the confused Quincy and helped Zeldris get freedom. "You don’t look twenty-four, Quincy. Where did you drop the height and all?"

Quincy’s face heated up as he understood why they acted that way. He looked at his body with insecurity and turned away. He left his pack because they made fun of him.

Will it continue here too?

"Was born that way. And the help I got, my wolf gobbled it up and became so big. What could I have done?"

Laurel noticed he had an accent when speaking with the embarrassed shaky voice. She didn’t want to judge him since she knew growth wasn’t on her side either.

Compared to Zeldris who looked more than nineteen, Quincy who looked sixteen would be really surprising.

"Help you got? Tell me." She might need it. She noticed Quincy folded his arms and she could imagine the pouty expression he’d be making as she backed him.

"Well, I was born small and even when a lot of prayers and herbs were given to me, I still stayed small." Quincy sighed. "When I shifted, we knew where it had all been."

It wasn’t the complete truth but it was all he could give to not expose much about him. His wolf size was one thing he loved and hated at the same time.

"Your wolf is really greedy if he took it all." Zeldris left the ground, carrying Mira who was still on his body. "Well, I’d be taking my leave now. Let’s go, littles."

Marino yelped and ran out of Laurel’s hold, following Zeldris and his sister outside. Quincy turned to them. Was playing with kids what Zeldris would rather do instead?

Taking care of the Princess should be first priority.

And who were those kids? They looked like Escanor and could be his siblings but the Princess shouldn’t be so close to them. "Whose kids are that?"

"Mine, of course." Laurel said proudly. If Quincy was that much older than her, then there’s no way Afficus was serious about her being married to him.

She just earned a big brother and protector, that’s all. She plopped down on her seat and looked over the notices on her desk. "What?" she asked when he said nothing.

Quincy’s eyes expanded when he’d heard that, he fell on his back. "You’re a mother already? Did you mate die?"

Laurel’s smug face vanished. Why should that be a prerequisite to be a mother? Why did he suddenly bring up a mate? "No, he didn’t die."

But she realized that meant she knew who her mate was and Quincy might pick it up if she doesn’t want to say it.

Quincy rose up again, with a satisfied expression. "That’s lucky. You might’ve ran from the curse or maybe because you’re a girl, it didn’t work."

Laurel stared at him with her head tilted to the right. A curse? A curse would make her mate die? Stefan die?

Should she ask further? It might make Quincy curious who her mate was and she wasn’t read to confess yet.

She sucked in air into her throat and spoke, hoping it’d sound light hearted and not worried. She had escaped a curse because she was a girl? What was that?

"Could you tell me about the curse though?"

Quincy hummed. "Your grandfather didn’t pass the story? Well, I don’t know why but your grandfather’s family had been cursed to lose their mate after birthing a child."

Laurel’s lips parted and she stared at Quincy in disbelief. A curse made people in her lineage lose their lives after birthing a child?

Then, her mother? Her grandmother? Had they been victims of this? Their deaths weren’t just death by anger, those were curses?

Did her father know this? If he did, he probably would’ve guessed that his mate was bound to die and not avenge.

He could’ve channeled his strength to breaking the curse not starting the catalyst to his kingdom’s destruction.

Laurel tried to shake it off but the growing depression in her heart didn’t falter and only grew bigger.

"M-My grandfather didn’t tell my father about this. Was this... this why he ran away from the tribe?" her voice was low. Her heart grew heavier.

How could this be? What did they do to get such a brutal curse? What if the mate died before birthing? Or the child died after losing their mother, like she’d have suffered?

"Actually," Quincy continued. "for a long time it happened to only their female mates. I don’t know it’d happen to your male mate so don’t worry."

That didn’t console Laurel at all. So what if it only happened to the male children? The female children would marry to other families anyway.

If they had only been male children, then they could’ve selfishly been marrying women that’d die after birthing a child and continue to carry the family’s name.

But she was a girl. Did the family name end with her?
