Chapter Three Hundred-Thirty-Four - No Sense Of Morality
Asher stood in silence, staring at where the Princess had stood. What was that really? Friends? Letter with no purpose? Didn’t she know he could do as he liked?
Or did she know but still said what she said?
"Shocked?"
Asher glanced over his shoulders. He was here already? He turned to the young man. "Zeno? Welcome."
Zeno folded his arms, and looked at the King with his eyes reflecting only disappointment.
It was his first time seeing the King one on one and he really wanted to pummel him for all the things he’d done.
To prevent that, Zeno kept his arms folded.
He felt glad to hear the Princess lash on the King because he didn’t seem to listen to anything but the psychotic voices that speak in his head.
"Nice to meet you, King Asher." He forced his head to bow. "I heard from the head guard at the entrance that you’ve been looking for me."
Asher opened his mouth to say something but closed it back. He couldn’t experiment on Zeno because he was a lycan and would break his code of conduct.
Worse was that he’s a bred lycan of Lunaria and one of their successful lycans with magic so Lunaria will have bigger issues with him if anything happened to this one.
Also, there’s that thing that Nene said that Lorena and Levine, the first bred lycans with magic that they found out about, had addressed Zeno as their superior.
With all that, Asher found another person he had to walk carefully with and it annoyed him. Thales, Zeno,... he turned to where the Princess had stood... even her?
He exhaled, walking past Asher with hands in his pocket. "Shouldn’t you have a happier look on your face for being summoned by the King? And what’d will I be shocked at?"
Zeno followed the King, wondering what the King had called him for. Surely if the King realized he’s a double agent, killing him immediately would be the way to go, not inviting him to the palace as if they were going to have tea.
"Do you have a parent from Lunaria? Your name sounds Lunarian." Asher picked the roundabout method.
Zeno shrugged. That was a sure question that he’d ask and he could reply in the negative and say his parents only liked the name, but he also had a point to make.
"I think one of my not-too-long-ago ancestors." He said as his response. Did the King suspect a connection between him and Lunaria and needed to confirm?
They entered the King’s study and Zeno immediately became alert when he saw all the weapons and the intimidating presence the room had.
In actuality, he was a minimalist who felt comfortable in any small or empty or hard place as long as it’s quiet so the King’s study, or should be a study, having a large bed and all those items made him feel uncomfortable.
"Do you know some close people from the Kingdom? What do you know about the people? The royalties in it?" Asher bombarded questions.
Zeno cleared his throat after understanding all of them. These were simple questions that simple answers could solve yet he felt he played an unseen game of the King.
Did he just call him to speak of his name and possible connections to Lunaria? If he did find a connection, what would he do?
Zeno remembered what Princess Laurel had said and frowned a little. That the King had called her from her pack suddenly with no purpose, as if they were friends.
He decided to answer the question when he finalized that the King may be asking of curiosity to while away time.
"I am close to no one in particular but the people are generally nice. The royal family isn’t complex and they’re only about six in the royal family so... yeah."
He didn’t want to sound so exact that it’d feel suspicious. Zeno relaxed a bit. "Your highness, did you also call Prince Sorren here so you two can chat?"
If the King called Princess Laurel and he for that, then maybe Prince Sorren too. To Zeno, Prince Sorren didn’t look like someone who had something interesting to say.
"Does he look like he has something interesting to say?" Asher instantly asked, making Zeno slowly nod.
The King accepted that he couldn’t really make Zeno do as he pleased, with the threat for Lunaria hanging by.
He had already told Nene to return the servants to the palace and lock the lab. He’d do this only to ensure that his Kingdom, which should be his first priority, was safe.
The Kingdom falling to chaos under his rule would be the worst thing that happened to him since his mother’s death. "You’d stay here for a while, Zeno." If anything, the young man didn’t seem overbearing to talk to. "My old guests would be leaving soon and you can take the closest room to my study."
It was a good offer to Zeno, at least he wouldn’t need to sleep in a forest on a rock and he still didn’t feel like returning to his pack.
As he thought, the King must be lonely. Being the only child and bearing the burden of a Kingdom, Zeno knew it’d be hard for him too. Even if he disliked the King, he couldn’t deny that he was quiet pitiful.
However, Zeno remembered. "I had a message for Prince Sorren and Princess Laurel. After that, I’d have to travel somewhere so I don’t think I can stay as you’d like."
Asher narrowed his eyes on him, then threw his head back and made whimpering sounds. "Really? Really??"
Zeno was confused at first before nodding to himself. So the rumors that the King was also a big baby weren’t wrong, that must be why he had no sense of morality.
He released his folded arms, relaxing more. "When your guests leave tomorrow, I’d stay for a bit. Truth is, they’d probably give me a negative response to my request but I needed to put the effort."
Asher sighed in relief and stayed quiet. Zeno definitely had more connection to the Princess than the Princess let up earlier.
