Chapter 320: Protecting

Chapter Three Hundred-Twenty – Protecting

Stefan had to be sure his younger brother had passed Damancas before returning to High Mountains by foot.

Since the threat had been spread widely by Lunaria, he worried that Damancas might pick action and attack the next lycan they find. He couldn’t risk that.

While walking back, he paused in front of the forest. He had promised to handle the issues that’d arise at High Mountains but his plans were only external issues.

The blond Elder would the affairs like usual while he’d have an overdue rest from all pack affairs. He strolled into the forest. It might just be a small rogue problem.

However the deeper he got into the forest, the less he thought so due to the suffocating presence in the forest. It was still morning but a particular place looked dark.

"So a new threat came close?" he looked for paw prints on the ground to give him an idea of how big it was.

The paws he saw were regular wolves paws and he found sandals marks that must’ve come from the young girls.

He looked around and found a small stream besides the area that looked dark, like the sun didn’t rise there.

From the looks of it, it seemed the girls had tried going close to the river and the wolves had chased them away, and attacked them.

The wolves stopped chasing when the girls were a good distance away from the stream. They weren’t just rogues, they were protecting something.

This piqued Stefan’s interest, he could sense the wolves as he took steps towards the stream. They came forward, not showing any hesitation to confront an Alpha.

This made Stefan stop, looking around to find what they could be protecting. The closer he got, the more he heard caws that belonged to crows.

Just then, the dark clouds around the area moved, diving down at him. He dodged timely and stared at the creatures. They were indeed crows.

The area they’ve been swarmed at had cleared. Stefan’s claws shot out and in one swipe, the force of his claws ripped the majority of crows and the rest flew back.

He heard the sound of paws hitting the earth quickly and bent down as the wolves leaped. They missed him and crashed on the birds.

Stefan watched the two abnormal creatures form a protective barrier around the area again. The eyes of these creatures were red and it bothered Stefan.

"If I leave and tell no one to come to this stream, this will be handled." He said, folding his arms.

But that wouldn’t do. Just because he needed the fastest way to return bed didn’t mean he’d abandon the people’s issues. Also, if he didn’t do it, his younger brother would.

These could be more dangerous than expected.

The creatures couldn’t follow his movements and he sped around them, staying by the river. Instantly, he caught a familiar scent and turned to a large rock by the river.

His eyes narrowed at the sleeping body and didn’t want to believe it. The crows spotted him and dived down at him, he moved towards the body and noticed them freeze.

Stefan stared at the sleeping lycan. "So you’re the one they are protecting? Why the hell are you here, Zeno?"

His eyes returned to the creatures, the wolves growled fiercely but Stefan couldn’t help but feel they were scared. Even the crows began to flap their wings in panic.

They must be worried of what he’d do to Zeno since he’s closer and had proved faster than them.

His claws retracted and he carefully nudged Zeno. Stefan didn’t enjoy being attacked by the crows especially, their claws weren’t very sharp but it bruised his skin.

Sorren would give him an earful if he saw his body covered in bruises, even if Stefan didn’t mind.

Zeno rolled to his back and Stefan realized that his clothes only consisted of the bright red cloak he wore over his body, nothing else underneath.

Stefan cringed and moved away from him, but it gave the crows time to fly around Zeno, shielding him. Stefan understood that this wouldn’t be as simple as he thought.

The fact that these animals had unnatural red eyes, like Zeno’s unusual eye color made him suspicious.

He picked up dried twigs and walked a distance. His goal was only waking Zeno up and asking for an explanation. He didn’t want to kill the animals unnecessarily.

And so it began, Stefan throwing twigs at Zeno while running away from the wolves trying to chow him down.

The crows frantically tried to block the twigs but they ended up falling on Zeno. Stefan found this hilarious.

Animals trying to protect a person. If it had just been wolves then Stefan would’ve assumed Zeno made friends with them or made himself the leader of their pack.

But crows too? They weren’t the easiest birds to tame.

These animals acted like parents trying to shield their child from taunts of a bully and Stefan felt oddly pleased to play the bully in this case.

Finally Zeno moved, and Stefan felt thankful that his first movement were adjusting the cloak he was wearing and preventing it from exposing what laid below.

He dropped the twigs and the wolves stopped chasing, immediately, they returned to Zeno’s side.

Zeno rose from the rock, wincing at the brightness of the place. "You guys should... darken this place, please."

His voice was still sleepy and Stefan’s eyes expanded when he saw the crows obey Zeno’s spoken words.

They recreated the dark clouds, swarming above Zeno and making that particular area dark.

Zeno chewed on nothing as his eyes moved, trying to find what had been bothering him. "Hmmm... what are... what is that?" his eyes were too sleepy to focus.

Stefan sighed. Could Zeno be a bird’s whisperer? He made his presence known. "Alpha Zeno! It’s a surprise to see you here!"

Zeno’s eyes shot open and all his focus returned to him.

Stefan saw the crows ascend to the sky and the wolves suddenly stopped being on guard. Did Zeno do that?
