Chapter 316: It’s Mercy

Chapter Three Hundred-Sixteen – It’s Mercy

Laurel finished writing all her letters and Saki packaged them. The witch had been working as the Princess’ delivery girl while using her magic.

She could easily teleport to the door of her room without Nero sensing her. They still didn’t had a plan to escape but Saki enjoyed being with someone she didn’t fear.

Working with the King had been terrifying, Nero stayed with the King all the time or went to hunt for an innocent werewolf, and Nene only smiled on order.

Everyone was very stiff so it felt like a breath of fresh air when this Princess actually had interesting things to say.

"So this Sorren you wrote to, he’d actually do something about this?" Saki fell on Laurel’s bed after returning from the second batch of letter delivery.

Laurel nodded, even if she buried her face in a book, while sitting on the bed. "He avoids trouble but knows when to act, unlike his older brother."

Saki laid on her stomach, swinging her legs in the air. "They’re brothers, huh? And lycan brothers with one being an Alpha." Saki raised a brow. "And you hate them both?"

Laurel looked up from the book. Hate felt like a strong word, but she disliked their guts. "They raided my Kingdom and killed my father. Shouldn’t I?"

Saki had noticed her hesitation and smirked. It’s not uncommon to hate the ones who destroyed one’s kingdom but she’d seen unique cases.

"Isn’t it common? The law of nature, the weak will always be conquered by the strong. No offense but you survived because you’re strong, so don’t blame them." Saki said.

It sounded like the dumbest thing Laurel had ever heard. So because a particular group of people are weak, the law of nature said that they should be conquered?

That’s not how the Moon Goddess would want it.

"Is that how it is at Damancas?"

Saki nodded to her question. The witch had also been a victim of that and accepted it as a natural phenomenon.

"At Damancas, the King would raid a werewolf pack and tell them beforehand to surrender or die. Many surrender because it’s the smart choice, they’re weak so why not."

Laurel studied Saki’s expression and could tell she had a personal experience. "What happened to the people?"

If they became slaves then it’d really change Laurel’s perspective of the cheerful King of Damancas.

Why raid weak but peaceful people in their homes and make them slaves? That’s peaked sadism. Why not make them strong if their weakness annoyed you?

"Well, they become paid servants, get an apprenticeship with a witch, join the Damancas Warriors or start a new life at Damancas. Their land and resources gets taken."

That sounded more wholesome than Laurel expected. With that example, it seemed clear that what the King of Damancas wanted was the land and resources.

If he didn’t attack the weak pack, give them a new life and take the land and resources as payment, another Kingdom would’ve done it and the people might not survive.

That’s a form of mercy, like her father had done for Lena’s pack, Riverlane, back then. She snapped from her thoughts. "Our case was different."

Green Valleys’ Kingdom wasn’t a weak Kingdom that needed saving. The only goal was revenge. "We sheltered three other packs, plus a minor one. All were destroyed."

Saki’s heartbeat quickened. Three werewolf packs were destroyed by lycans? It brought back her fear and anger but triple times. "Lycans are scary species, aren’t they?"

Laurel agreed, looking back at her book. Because of how bad of a reputation lycans had, she had never imagined herself with one no matter how wild fantasies went.

She’d always been realistic, with her pain, her wins and her love life, but everything went down on a fast surreal pace and she found herself mated to a vengeful lycan.

If those had ever been in her fantasies, she wondered how she’d have reacted. Maybe take Saki’s words and accept the kingdom’s fall and her mate?

Sounded ridiculous. Where’s her pride as a werewolf?

Time passed while she read and Saki fell asleep. Laurel heard some ear wrenching singing and protected Saki with the charm and covered her with a blanket.

She covered her ears and rushed out of the room. She sighted the creature threatening her very life with his voice. "King Asher, this is a unique way to kill me."

Asher stopped and frowned. "Shouldn’t you be asleep? It’s barely morning—" he looked outside the window. It’s fully morning, he’s the one who overslept.

He shrugged it off. It wouldn’t be his first time. He continued singing while descending the stairs to his study.

Laurel locked the room’s door and pocketed the key. Saki could easily leave by teleporting when she woke up.

For now, she had to follow the King and get updates on her sentence here. It’s not every time she could see him.

"King Asher!" she ran down the stairs. "King—"

She noticed his scent, Thales, he had returned and probably waited at the King’s study.

Laurel hastened up. The King could catch his scent yet headed there, nonchalantly while producing deathly sounds? "And last time, he and Thales had a fight."

This would be the first time he’d meet the King one on one after that. She followed the King into the study, Thales was seated on the visitor’s space with crossed legs.

"Ah, Princess Laurel, I didn’t know you’d be awake already." He opened one of his closed eyes.

Laurel sighed. Why did they both think she’d still be in bed? Or was that how Princess’ slept for beauty skin?

"So what are you doing here?" Asher fell on his big golden seat that looked sculpted for a King, it was.

Laurel didn’t know what side to be on as she stood. She wouldn’t stay by Asher but staying by Thales may insinuate that she supported his decision to fight.

"I’d like to know how long you intend to keep Princess Laurel here. The Princess I serve isn’t a toy to keep for your amusement." Thales didn’t mince words.

Laurel nodded, making up her mind and seating besides Thales. She noticed Asher scoff at her action.
