Chapter 297: Gifts

Chapter Two Hundred-Ninety-Seven – Gifts

Laurel’s mind wondered for a bit. Why was she at High Moon Kingdom? Just to suffer? But she had to endure! For the spies’ sake! For those drugs to be destroyed!

"King Asher, we’d fist fight soon." Laurel warned, her eyes darkening on the object of her hatred for the past minutes. "I’d appreciate it if you show respect for my officials."

She didn’t bring any werewolf for his crazy experiments so the least she expected from him was comportment.

A smirk grew on Asher’s face. With that response, the Knight should be important to her.

He looked over at Bebe, he found her boring since she had already been used by him. He’d hate to reuse a test subject. The young Beta... he looked away. A child.

Asher jumped out from the bed, stunning them all. There was nothing better to do, so he’d take her words for it. "I’d be handicapped, both hands if you want. Let’s fistfight."

Color drained from Laurel’s face. What had she done? Before she could argue, the King had disappeared out the door. She didn’t follow and turned to Nero.

That one had his own problems.

"Beta, didn’t we have gifts to scare this fowl?" Bebe whispered to the young Beta.

Ferdinand looked at the door, the highlight would’ve been Thales but he’s yet to get in but they needed a distraction. The King was more unpredictable than he thought.

Asher poked his head into the room. "And let’s talk about price for the winner. If I win, you’d give me one of those ladies." He pointed at one of the maidens.

Laurel quickly left her seat. What kind of game was that?

The King pointed inside the room. "If I lose, I’d give you a young lycan girl with good speed. She’d be very useful to you. How’s that for a deal—"

"No deal." Laurel slapped the wall. The young lycan girl might be Nether or another of his loyalist, not even worth it. And she’d never sell a werewolf to him.

"Your highness, could you treat my presence here seriously? I’m not interested in fist fighting you, unless you cause a provocat—" she bit her tongue.

She shouldn’t say that or the King will just cause a provocation so they’d actually fistfight.

She exhaled when she caught the scent of Thales coming towards the room they were in, she and the Beta were closer to the door so could get the scent first.

The Beta left his seat, and carried the bag Bebe came in with. "Your highness, would you mind taking a look at some rare gifts that I brought for you?"

Asher’s bored expression brightened and he strolled back into the room with slowed steps. "They aren’t all swords, I hope. I’m getting bored of those."

The Beta unwrapped the bag to reveal neatly sharpened axes, crossbows with golden shine, and a short scepter with a green emerald at the eye.

Laurel felt it looked familiar to the ring Sir Darren usually wore to detect magic. Her heart skipped a beat, why did the Beta want to give the King such?

"This is a scepter used to detect any magical energy around it, good to detect witches with." The beta gestured for a maiden to get it closer to the King.

"It glows when meters away from a witch and depending on the glow, that’s how powerful the witch is." The Beta gestured again and the maiden gave it to the King.

The Princess studied the King and he actually looked interested in it, she noticed Nero got closer to. She didn’t think they’d be interested in magic.

Still, Laurel felt it was a dangerous gift to give to a King that would hurt a witch if he found one.

"Though, it’s said this one isn’t the most powerful scepter because if it makes a powerful glow, the emerald will break and it can’t be used again." The Beta added.

Zeldris couldn’t place why he’d praise the scepter so much to give it’s negative factors, but he hoped the Beta knew what he was doing by giving the King such a gift.

Asher flipped the scepter and caught it. It wasn’t a bad gift to him, and he had seen one of those before. It’d be really hard to find such a witch that could break the emerald.

They’d only be one of those cursed Grand Witches that might not still exist. Those Grand Witches that were rumored to be able to fall a Kingdom.

He glanced at the boy and smiled. "You don’t have bad taste yourself, Ferdinand."

The Beta saw that as a compliment and bowed. There was a knock on the door. "Oh, our last guest."

Without thinking, Asher waved his hand as a permission to let them in. He kept the scepter on his legs.

The door opened and Thales walked in, but before the King could register where he knew the scent, his smile slowly faded when a glow emanated from the scepter.

It didn’t take long for it to become a bright light that dragged the scepter off the King’s legs and towards the ceiling, as if trying to run away from the magical presence.

The bright light completely illuminated the room for few seconds till a loud crack from inside the scepter destroyed the emerald and shattered it into pieces.

Laurel blinked multiple times to clear her vision but her sight became near perfect when she felt Thales warm hands on her forehead. He used magic to help.

She looked for the King and saw a pale expression on his face as he stared at emerald scattered on the ground. That must be the scare the Beta planned.

She stared at the small Beta who didn’t even hide his smirk as he sat down in his chair. There was silence, till Nero turned to Thales.

The lycan didn’t understand what he was doing there again with the Green Valleys’ Princess but he understood that they were at his mercy.

"Leave with your officials, Princess Laurel. The King will call you by tomorrow." Nero said with a bow.

Laurel sighed. She didn’t expect that they’d be something to actually cause fear in that mindless killer.
