Chapter 295: Wine
Chapter Two Hundred-Ninety-Five – Wine
The Princess took a step back. Something insane must go in that King’s head. She was sure they didn’t have a special relationship, so why did he act like they did?
She noticed Zeldris steal a glance at her and she frowned at him. "I really don’t know what this mad King is talking—"
Asher fell from the bed, which was a good height from the ground. Laurel resisted the urge to go and check on him.
The Beta snapped his fingers and one of his maidens left to check on the King. Bebe felt tensed as the maiden went to the King, she knew how crazy he could be.
And to her, he could be faking all that so that the Princess would get close. However Bebe didn’t think he’d be perverted so she stayed calm to watch him.
She saw the maiden actually help him up.
Laurel rushed to him, sensing that something might be actually wrong with him. She took the glass from his hand and perceived it, it didn’t smell like only alcohol.
"Who served this to you, King Asher? I think it’s drugged, I’d tell Nero immediately—" he held her arm before she left. She shoved his hand aside but stayed there in case he needed to say something.
"I’d grow a resistance to it."
Laurel raised a brow. He’d grow a resistance to drugs? What if it’s poison? Or was the poison one he created himself and he’s trying to get used to it?
But she didn’t think he’d put himself in a moment of weakness when he expected visitors that didn’t like him. "Who served it to you? Just say it."
Asher opened one of his closed eyes and noticed how she stood, glaring down at him with hands on her waist.
That singular pose reminded him of his mother forcing him to take medicine when he caught a cold as a pup. It made him smile but Laurel’s frown only deepened.
Her reaction made his smile widen, she was really an interesting character. So he decided to do what he always did to show he didn’t need help, he forced himself up.
The maiden didn’t think he should as whatever he drank obviously weakened him. She left his side and reported it to her Young Master.
Whatever that could weaken the King of Lycans must be really potent but whoever could make him take it was more powerful. It meant his guard wasn’t up at all.
"I’m fine." Asher said when he sat up, he touched his forehead and exhaled when he didn’t heat up. "I know who did it. I’d handle it later. Don’t worry."
Laurel nodded, before realizing that she shouldn’t care. She dropped the glass on the table and moved away from the bed. She really wanted to know who pulled this.
She noticed the King had an impressed smile. He was crazy so he must see this attempt at his life as a game, but then it was a drug so not really an attempt on his life.
"I’d like to know what type of drug it is, Your highness." The Beta stepped forward and made a small bow. "I am Ferdinand, Beta of Green Valleys."
Zeldris had multiple shivers trail down his body when the Beta asked. How could he ask the King directly what drug made him weakened?
Didn’t that make it clear he wanted to know what the drug was so he could use it against him in the future? Zeldris didn’t think the Beta would be so obvious.
Asher exhaled, leaving his bed. "Well, if you want to know, Slime brought it to me." He raised a plastic bottle of red wine. "It was given to him by Lady Zara."
Lady Zara? Laurel’s eyes darkened on the bottle. Was this Lady Zara trying to outright commit treason?
Laurel knew the Lady didn’t like the King but to drug him to that level of weakness, she was a formidable foe.
And then she used Slime, who the King kept his guard down around. Laurel felt a tad bit pity for the King because he’d have to keep his guard up against even Slime.
"Well, at least this time, the drug didn’t change the smell or taste of the wine so it’s a smart improvement on her side." Asher tossed the glass cup.
Laurel jolted when the glass cup crashed to the ground, she stared at it before dragging her eyes to the King. "Do you mean it’s not the first time she’s doing this?"
A sardonic chain of laughter left the King. "I’ve known Zara since we’re kids. What do you think? It should be like ten times already."
Laurel stayed quiet. Despite the King’s expression and actions being as if he enjoyed it, she could hear the pain in his voice when he said it happened multiple times.
She knew it was his pain before he sounded the same way when he spoke about Lunaria taking his mother for experimentations.
If he’d known Zara for that long then she must mean a bit to him, and it wasn’t fun having a childhood friend try to drug or kill with well thought out tactics.
"Either way, Laurel." Asher turned to her. "You’re the star of today’s show. Stay on the bed, I’d be back soon." He disappeared into another room.
Laurel’s shoulders slumped as she watched him leave. He must think she’s crazy to listen to him.
Nero walked in seconds later and Bebe forced him to give them chairs which he did reluctantly, while keeping his distance from the wild wolfess that sort his life.
A servant girl walked out from the room the King went in, and all eyes followed her as she walked towards Laurel.
She stretched out the tray in her hand, it had a short glass cup that had red wine, wine that Laurel recognized as the one the King just suffered from drinking.
"You have nothing else to serve guests with?" she tried to sound as polite as she could.
The servant girl bowed. "The King ordered you to take this and give him report. He said it’s ’okay’ to drink."
A sense of pressure consumed Zeldris and Bebe, that was definitely the drugged wine so how could it be okay to drink? They stared at the Princess intently.
Small sweat beads formed on Laurel’s head. What again did that King want to do with her?
