Chapter 291: Pressure

Chapter Two Hundred-Ninety-One – Pressure

Laurel didn’t expect to be attacked by motherly warmth, a hearty compliment to her Beta and herself, and then being offered a meal with the King and Queen.

It stunned her how these people treated her like a famous Princess, and it felt weird because she never experienced it before. She hoped her actions wouldn’t show that fact.

The Queen placed a piece of steak in her plate and Laurel stared at it quizzically. She looked at the Queen who smiled brightly. Laurel smiled back.

This was probably how mothers act, she wouldn’t know.

Zeldris watched the two maidens literally feed the Beta, who only had to open his mouth to receive the food.

And the maidens did it like it was the greatest honor. Zeldris hid his embarrassed face. Couldn’t the spoiled child not act spoiled at the time?

"Can I know your name, young man?" the Queen asked as she dropped her utensils on the table. Servants took her almost finished plate away. She was handed a glass wine which she gulped down immediately.

Zeldris looked from himself to the Beta causally eating. Did the Queen refer to him? He noticed that the Queen hadn’t reacted to the Beta nor he to her.

He knew the Beta walked in when the Princess and the Queen were hugging but he expected them to have a little interaction afterwards.

So why did it seem the Queen ignored the Beta again and spoke to him? She even scolded the young Grand Witch on disappearing and rubbed his face a lot.

Zeldris exhaled softly. "Zena Cauldron, your highness."

Laurel snapped her head to him and the Beta stopped eating and frowned at him. Even Thales looked surprised.

"Cauldron!" the Queen looked elated. "I knew I recognized your cute little face. Your mother was a healing witch, wasn’t she? Part of the Alpha sisters, no?"

Laurel slowly brought her head back to her food. She realized that that would be Zeldris’s real name that he disliked, the one he abandoned after meeting her.

The one that sounded like a magic spell.

He probably said it now because it had ties to Damancas and the Queen would recognize it faster. The Princess smiled, Zena wasn’t a bad name, only a bit feminine.

Zeldris nodded, even if he didn’t remember a thing. His heartbeat quickly when the Queen left her seat and came to him. He nearly screamed when she held his hand.

"You were part of Grand Witch Ella’s entourage. Wasn’t he?" she asked the last part to Thales, who nodded.

Zeldris’s eyes widened as he realized the connection the Queen was making. He wondered if she’d hug him and console him for his loss, he’d feel embarrassed if so.

The Queen placed a hand on his shoulders. "I’m sorry."

Zeldris felt disappointed but accepted it, after all, the accident had happened three years ago and he no longer cried about it.

They returned back to the grand hall when they were done with their meals, two smaller seats were arranged below the King’s and Queen’s throne.

Laurel and the Beta sat down, while the rest stood behind them. The King drank from a glass and returned it to the tray a servant walked away with.

He cleared his throat before speaking. "The Grand Witch following you had already sent us a letter concerning the journey that you will be making."

Laurel gulped down saliva, but nodded.

The King smiled warmly. "Rest assured, you are our ally. If that King dares do anything wrong to you, then he shall answer to Damancas."

A shiver ran down Laurel’s spine and she wondered why she felt scared instead of assured.

Did that mean that if any harm came her way, it’d cause war between the two kingdoms? She didn’t want that.

The King of lycans might not readily kill her but might do something wrong to her, if she lets her guard down. She had to be alert then.

It seemed more pressure had mounted on her as the peace of Damancas rested on her actions at High Moon Kingdom.

The King continued. "So, we sent spies to the kingdom and the main goal is destroying the drugs he had made. Those spies are the best ones yet and I can say ever."

Zeldris glanced at the Beta who didn’t seem to be listening, but his maidens were. Did he plan to get the information from his maidens?

The Knight turned to the Princess who listened with rapt attention, he smiled. He glanced at Thales, who looked rather bored. What’s wrong with he and the Beta?

"In conclusion," the King stopped rambling about the spies when he noticed the look the boy and Grand Witch gave him. He cleared his throat again. "kindly help them."

Thales exhaled. That’s the most important part of the conversation. He left where he sat and bowed. "Grand Witch Thales Talisman will do everything to support."

Laurel and the rest bowed and showed their support.

The King smiled, and gestured for them to rise. "So a little more information is, a witch had already teleported to the lab and made a map of it. You’d get it from Arcadia."

Thales snapped his head behind him and shivered when he caught the scent of the young General. He looked back at the King but caught the Queen’s eyes on him.

She smirked and Thales wanted to bury himself.

"Princess Laurel, your major duty is to distract the King to stay away from his lab. Your officials can distract his two other loyalists, Nether and Nero." The King explained.

That made things easier for Laurel. The risky job wasn’t tossed to her hand, all she had to be was a distraction.

Since the King invited her, he might stay in his palace first. She’d keep him there, after all if he took her to his lab, it’d definitely not be for anything good.

"Yes, your highness! We’d do our best!"

Afterwards, all of them left the hall and descended down the stairs. Zeldris watched the Queen’s reaction to the Beta leaving but there was nothing amiss.

He couldn’t place why the Queen never spoke to him, despite his unique situation as a young official.

"Sheesh." Zeldris sighed when he bumped into Thales. He frowned at the witch but saw him staring worriedly at someone below the stairs.

Zeldris turned to see a pretty lady cladded with white armor, holding a bundle of paper under her arm, glaring at Thales.
