Chapter 286: Working For Her

Chapter Two Hundred-Eighty-Six – Working For Her

Laurel strolled into the Valkyrie’s Quarters, rubbing her wrist where her mate had held her. Elma had been really overdramatic during that short moment.

"You sound like you wanted to make the moment longer." Elma snickered. "Also mate said that he wanted to—"

"Stop." Laurel stopped moving. The last thing she wanted was Elma confusing her again. Couldn’t her own wolf be on her side for once?

What exactly would she gain from being with her mate? Nothing! Also, chances that he’s lying were great and he making her feel things were all part of his plan to use her.

"Elma, can you think of any reason why he’d change from his murderous rage to being calm and touchy? Nothing. There’s no reason he’d change, so it’s obviously an act."

Laurel learnt in time not to expect anything like love from her father and due to Lena’s influence, she had hoped her mate would give her what she never experienced.

But that didn’t happen and she ended up fooling herself, but not anymore. She’d be the only one capable of giving herself happiness, and that’s not bad.

"When are we leaving then?"

Laurel froze, she wanted to answer immediately before she realized that it wasn’t Zeldris that asked. She turned to him. "Grand Witch Thales? How did you..."

What’s with this man? She stared at the young man who had a smile on his face.

Did he tell Sorren he’d he coming here? If not, she’d be harassed by that General for having uninvited guests.

"Do you mean to High Moon Kingdom? You’d come with us?" she looked him up and down. What exactly was going on in his head?

Didn’t he just leave the Kingdom to come here? Why did he have to go back so soon? And on what occasion will he escort her? As her what? Her eyes widened.

"Or wait, did you accept my offer to work for me?"

Seeing her hopeful eyes, Thales couldn’t help but nod even if he was still deciding it.

Since the King of Lycans sorted for the Princess then she must know about his experiments.

There’s no other reason the King will need anyone, especially a werewolf Princess, if it wasn’t to brag about his drugs.

He knew that Lady Zara took Slime from him and Thales had used the chance to ask Slime some specific questions about the lab.

He made friends with the young lycan and asked curiously, and the innocent or stupid Slime told him almost all he knew, with a proud tone.

Thales couldn’t believe that the young lycan thought he was doing good by capturing werewolves to try out drugs that’d be useful in the future.

The King definitely didn’t tell him what they’d be used for or Slime was made to believe the use was the right thing.

"Don’t worry, I’d also be there to protect you from other witches because truthfully, we have some witches working for Lycans now." Thales sighed.

Slime had told him of some witch from Fang that would aid the King on his missions. Thales already had a plan to use to curb them if they come after them.

All witches answer to and fear the Witch Order after all.

Laurel tilted her head but nodded. The dynamics in power had been shifting a lot recently. Witches now worked for Lycans? Absurd! Everything was in tumbles.

"You have to make it official though. Black Thorns too because I don’t think—"

"That’d be when Damancas accept them as a pack. You would’ve been assigned a witch as an ally of Damancas sooner or later. I only fastened it up and assigned myself."

Laurel could tell that it meant a big deal. The witch she’d have gotten would never have been a Grand witch so now she felt lucky.

She still didn’t understand what Thales wanted from her but she already felt gratitude towards him.

"Now, I’d tell your Alpha this. He shouldn’t refute my coming along and should feel more comfortable with the officials you’re bringing along." Thales added.

Laurel wondered how he knew the Alpha didn’t like the officials, and even how he knew about the King of Lycans.

It dawned on her that she just accepted a witch into her life without knowing anything about them and being worried and skeptical about them few days ago.

But she wanted to give Thales a benefit of doubt, in time, he’d tell her the things she wanted to know.

"Um... you can just ask me if you have questions instead of staring." Thales said, rubbing his neck.

Laurel realized she had kept his eyes on him while thinking. Well, would he answer her questions now? "Who told you about the King’s letter?"

The letter just arrived and only Zeldris knew of it, and then they left to the Alpha’s study. Zeldris wasn’t talkative enough to have told him everything as they left there.

Thales nodded then showed her his palm, a small blue glow shapes like a seed was on it. Laurel squinted her eyes at it. It’s magic, but what did it do?

"First of all, it has no effect on the person. Zeldris and I had a kind of pact. Since he has magic residues, I can tap into his consciousness and be able to mind link with him even over a far distance. So with his permission, I listened in. It doesn’t make him unconscious either."

Laurel’s eyes remained on the small seed. Zeldris made a pact with him? Was it when he walked the Young Grand Witch back to High Mountains last night?

What was that knight of hers thinking? Then she recalled that he said ’tap into his consciousness’?

Wasn’t that what the Grand Witch did to Bebe? "You need a pact to do this. If no pact is done—"

"You are smart, Princess." Thales smiled. "You want to ask about the girl that my sister possessed, right? Well, yes, she has no magic residues so my sister must’ve unnaturally weakened her consciousness."

Laurel exhaled. Even if she was once again learning things about magic, it felt better since she could learn how to help the ones she cared about.
