Chapter 285: I insist

Chapter Two Hundred-Eighty-Five – I insist

Zeldris had felt a lot of intense emotions but none had varied like the ones he felt during the few minutes he’d been inside the Alpha’s study.

Anger, impressed, scared and worried, and then anger again and more impressed mixed with worry. The Princess was the major reason for those changes.

How did she casually threaten a lycan Alpha? And why did the lycan Alpha let it go all the time without a word?

They had to be something in between, definitely not from the Princess, but the Alpha might have a soft spot for her, which was crazy since her father supposedly killed his.

Zeldris could easily understand why the Alpha would like the Princess since she made things work for her and was amazing, but didn’t the Alpha overestimate his chances?!

Why will the Princess ever like him back? Didn’t he put in consideration all he had done? Such selfish affection.

"I will..." Laurel replied. "... because I can’t just say ’no’ again and I have a sure way to survive his experiments if you even had an inkling of worry about that."

Zeldris noticed the Alpha’s expression. From a man to a man, he could tell that the Alpha did worry about the Princess. Zeldris felt both annoyed and amused by that.

"You can’t go to him with an army, I hope you know that." Stefan reminded, because it’s only an army that could protect her if that King decide to do something wrong.

Laurel unfolded her hands and met his gaze. "Alpha Stefan, you don’t support what your King is doing with wolves, right? Then, why don’t you do anything about it?"

Stefan hesitated, then looked away. They were many reason he couldn’t just do something about it, other than prevent it from happening close to him.

Revealing the King’s actions might not bring discontent from the people of his Kingdom and surprisingly, they could be other lycans who will support it.

It can prove to be a double edged sword where other packs allied with High Moon, especially the werewolf packs will withdraw their alliance.

And what else would happen if not a war between lycans and werewolves war like fifteen years ago?

Still Stefan knew that didn’t excuse his unwillingness to do anything, because he was simply unwilling. He didn’t want to have anything to do with the King.

He had a lot to lose because if he tried fighting the King, the King could send the High Moon Lycan Warriors to raid the packs under him and take them all.

Werewolves from Green Valleys and Black Thorns will be properties and the lycans will turn to servants. He couldn’t afford that, he couldn’t afford losing his pack again.

"I have my reasons. The King of Lycans isn’t the most reasonable person to talk to, you know that." He finally answered, meeting her gaze.

Laurel didn’t see any reason to push it. She knew that just like her, he’d watch his steps before defiling a King. Even the King of Damancas thread carefully.

Sir Darren mentioned that he sent some spies there and their sole mission was to find the drugs and destroy them.

It’d be hard for the King to create another one so soon.

Laurel planned to visit so she could be the one to distract the King and she’d go with other talkative officials of hers, especially Zeldris who could distract that Nero.

"I will go, Alpha. I have my reasons too and I ask that you respect it." She finalized and stepped back.

Stefan didn’t say a word. She spoke about the King’s experimentation, then did she plan to go to High Moon to do anything about it? She wasn’t that deluded, was she?

He clasped his hands together. She had made up her mind and he couldn’t stop her or she’d just do it without his permission. "Since you want to, then you can."

Zeldris exhaled, holding his chest. At least, that arc was gone. He remembered the blond elder’s report and hoped the Alpha would forget about that too.

"I’d send you a Lycan Warrior that’d follow—"

"No, thank you. I will go with my own warrior." Laurel objected. The lycan warrior will be from High Mountains, wouldn’t it?

They all disliked her so could as well conspire to kill her while at High Moon. Also, they’d be like a shadow, spying and caging her. She couldn’t risk that.

Stefan expected the objection so he demanded to know who she’d be taking with her. After she mentioned, he could only sigh.

A child and the former blind man? That’s all?

"You think your Beta will want to go? And him?" Stefan turned to Zeldris who already spaced out. "Laurel..."

"I insist." Laurel nudged Zeldris and he looked at her. "My knight has many skills." She held his arm fondly. "And my young Beta is really strong for the ’child’ you think he is."

Stefan resisted the urge to scoff. A twelve year old child could barely be good enough for a Warrior’s position, talk less of a Beta, who’s second only to the Alpha.

There’s much more to consider than just having the blood of a Beta in your veins or having a Beta rank, but he didn’t refute Laurel’s claim.

To keep him at ease, he had plans to send some warriors to High Moon Kingdom to await her arrival.

If she didn’t still accept them there, they could just watch her from a distance.

She might need their help when making a casual walk around High Moon, after all she once got in trouble last time over casually walking around.

"Zeldris." he called the still dazed man. He had tried to ignore his mate wrapping her arms around him, he already guessed their relationship was more friendlier than Knight and Princess, but as Baxter said, the Princess needed more people her age, right?

Zeldris dragged his eyes from the Princess and dropped them on the Alpha. "Y-Yes, sir."

"Do your best to protect your Princess. High Moon Kingdom isn’t filled with bad people but they lurk around looking for who to annoy. You better be alert."

Zeldris nodded, and unconsciously made a bow.
