Chapter 280: Trust

Chapter Two Hundred-Seventy-Nine – Trust

Stefan didn’t know what his reaction should be.

The witch who’s to visit High Mountains first had visited his mate by evening and the warriors said he was only a normal wolf, with nothing off.

He might’ve masked himself like a normal wolf to get in unnoticed, the warriors couldn’t even remember what he looked liked.

Stefan sent a warrior to the Green Valleys’ Lead Warrior’s quarters but now, he received word from Sorren that his friend had passed the night at his place.

How fast did that witch move? What did he see Laurel for? These were questions Stefan couldn’t immediately get and it made him panic, in the inside.

On the outside, he hurriedly wrote down notices, with Beta Cade. The Beta noticed the Alpha didn’t concentrate but left him to it so he wouldn’t cut the little flow he had.

All the Beta knew was that Prince Sorren had a witch ’friend’ that moved suspiciously, which was to be expected from the witch folks.

The only troubling things were Sorren having a friend, the friend being a witch, and that the letter the friend sent had come from High Moon Kingdom.

A witch which had been staying at High Moon Kingdom? Cade couldn’t think of anything more absurd. That was the last place they could survive in.

This witch must be playing some tricks on Sorren, and depending on how high Sorren’s guard was with friends, he wouldn’t notice the tricks.

"We’d go to High Mountains and join Sorren in having tea with this witch." Stefan decided. "I hope you don’t mind." He left the table and walked out of his study.

The Beta stared at him as he walked away. Did he have a say in that decision? Left for him, he’d like to remain.

It wasn’t for fear of being attacked because it’s unlikely that Sorren’s friend would attack, but because they weren’t invited and Sorren could become prickly if they showed up unannounced.

To Cade, being on Sorren’s bad list felt scarier than any witch, but he still left his seat and followed the Alpha.

He didn’t expect the Alpha to be seated calmly after the witch acted suspicious and now went to see Sorren.

The Beta quickly mind linked the Lead Warrior to take care as he was leaving with the Alpha.

Cade wondered why they couldn’t just ask the Princess what she discussed with the witch instead of being so guarded. "Alpha, are you feeling okay?"

Stefan stopped moving.

The Beta hurried to catch up with him, for some reason he felt like the Alpha acted strangely.

It’s expected of him to worry about Sorren, but not to the extent to want to go there. Since when did he have so little faith in Sorren, or did something else bother him?

"I’m fine." Stefan stared at his palm. "I don’t think... anything’s wrong with me. Hmm, nothing at all."

That didn’t sound convincing to Cade at all.

Stefan turned to him. "You can stay, I’d go alone."

Cade panicked. Did his question make him sound like he didn’t want to go? He didn’t but he’d never dare make it known. "I... I can go with..."

"It’s fine." Stefan continued moving. "It’s really fine."

The Beta watched his Alpha leave, something had happened, perhaps something he didn’t like to happen but couldn’t control and it seemed above the witch’s case.

"I don’t even know how to help." Cade clicked his tongue and headed back to the Alpha’s study to finish.

The Warriors at the border shrinked when the Alpha passed them because they’ve already been scolded by General Conrad for letting another witch in without permission.

But the Alpha didn’t speak to the Warriors and it made the Warrior’s panic more, as if their fate had been sealed.

What they didn’t know was that the Alpha was locked in his head, judging and scolding himself for his thoughts yet not having enough conviction not to believe it.

It wasn’t only Laurel who didn’t have trust in him, he had suddenly realized that he had no trust in her either.

It made it clear for him to see how great the space between them actually was.

He didn’t want to blame himself for not trusting her, but it made him feel like a hypocrite that he had asked to be trusted.

Almost every time they meet, she reminded him of how he promised to kill her and what he had forgotten would return again – when she swore to destroy all he loved.

Her expression when she said it, it felt like she was sure of the steps to take to achieve that.

He didn’t know her enough to know how far she’d go or not go. If she still expected him to keep his promise, then she might still plan to keep hers.

The most important to him was his younger brother. He could guess that the witch came to visit Princess Laurel first due to respect of being an ally of his Kingdom.

But what if she had given him orders to hurt Sorren? Stefan disliked his distrust but he didn’t convince himself not to believe it.

Laurel kept reminding him to kill her and he’d never do it, but what if she went ahead with her own part and hurt Sorren? He didn’t want to imagine what he’d do.

In that case, being with his younger brother and his new witch friend would be the easiest way to rest at ease.

If by any chance he had an order from Laurel and tried hurrying Sorren, Stefan planned to kill him immediately without getting a confession on who sent him.

He might not be able to handle the confession.

The guards at the High Mountains bowed as the Alpha passed but deep down they were worried about another witch attack caused by the Alpha’s presence.

What worried them more was the dead expression on the Alpha’s face and they couldn’t place why. One of them ran to tell the Elders of the Alpha’s visit.
