Chapter Twenty-Eight – Purr
Stefan’s forehead creased. Was she always this ungrateful or was it because it was him?
He noticed her eyes lingered on his chest, he smirked. "You say wear a shirt but you’re staring?’"
"Are you’re not wearing a shirt so I’d stare then?" Laurel asked back.
Stefan frowned. She always had something to say.
"And believe me, I’ve seen better." Laurel added.
He wouldn’t believe it but up in her room, kept in a high tower like a Rapunzel, she could watch the hunters train.
They were shirtless almost all the time. Sweaty, glistening bodies under the sun were her usual sight.
She got so sick of it, actually, she never fancied it. Her heart always hurt that hunters got to train but she didn’t so watching them was painful.
"You must have." Stefan agreed. "You’re a princess that many young males would throw themselves on."
Did he think her life was such gold? She shook her head. Well, she didn’t want to demean herself.
"Think what you’d like. I’d return to my prison now and await the judgement on my life."
Stefan watched as she staggered to her feet. The effects of the drugs he gave her hadn’t faded off. As she reached for the door knob, the door swiftly opened and hit her face.
"Goddess, help me." Laurel groaned as she rubbed her head. Her face folded when she saw him but she remembered what Jessika said so forced a smile immediately. "Sor...ren...." She purred.
Both Stefan and Sorren looked at her quizzically. Did she just...? Sorren carefully backed away, towards his brother. "Ah, I haven’t gotten any lead on the poisoning."
Laurel’s feet was glued to the ground, her face red from embarrassment. That purr left her lips by accident.
She only wanted to mask the fact she nearly accused him of poisoning her. And it came out in front of her mate? "Now he’d think I’m some flirt. He already thinks boys fall for me."
"I don’t really care what he thinks." Elma stated. "He has a fiancée to himself and his brother, is honestly not bad."
What did she mean? Laurel smirked internally. Her wolf might fall in love first but she fell out of love fast as well. "Sorry, but I’m a faithful girl, Elma."
"Whatever. I’m open to a wolf with good etiquettes and manners. Most importantly, knows how to treat a lady right." Her wolf insisted.
Laurel sighed. And was Sorren supposed to be all that?
"You there, have any clue why you were poisoned?" Sorren snapped her out of her thoughts.
She spun to face them. According to Jessika, the prison guard didn’t tell her of the plan because they once had a fight. She could leverage that.
"I once injured him because he was rude to me. I didn’t think it’d make him want to kill me though."
Injured him? Sorren’s mind immediately went to the marks he saw on the guard’s neck. "So it was your fault?"
Stefan rolled his eyes. So she was even troublesome to others and not just him? She smiled as Sorren frowned at her. It made Stefan uncomfortable. "Return to your prison."
Prison? Wasn’t she supposed to be taken to the maid’s quarters?
"She might not survive another attack like this. She was lucky this time because I was close." Sorren said.
"Why were you even there?" It left Stefan’s lips. "I mean, you could’ve just let her die instead of stressing yourself."
Sorren frowned. Did he really undermine his effort to save his mate? There’d were three important reasons he had to make sure Laurel survived.
Being his brother’s mate was the most important of them.
And despite all that, even staining himself with blood, his efforts were being undermined? "I can’t believe you." He turned away from his brother.
Laurel’s lips curved. He’s still awfully dramatic.
"You might want to see me dead, but for some reason, your brother is looking out for you. You sound very ungrateful." She told Stefan.
"You think he’s stopping me from slicing your neck right now?" Stefan glared at her.
"I’m sure he is."
Stefan turned to his younger brother and Sorren sighed. "Please don’t drag me into this. I’d be outside. But really, we can transfer her to the maid’s quarters. Any question Jade or Cade or whoever ask, tell them I sent her there. You know you can always use me as an excuse."
"Aww, what a kind brother." Laurel said, looking Stefan in the eyes. "You might want to learn a thing or two."
The door slammed loudly as Sorren left.
Laurel’s eyes were still on Stefan who stared back at her.
"I only respect his wishes because he’s my brother and probably thinks I’d be hurt if anything happens to you. When I prove that I won’t, he wouldn’t hesitate to support my decision to kill you."
Did he just admit that he couldn’t kill her now? So it wasn’t only because of Sorren that she was alive.
"You don’t have to kill me. Let me live miserably after you took everyone I’ve loved. Isn’t that the best torment?"
The confused feelings will still be there as long as she lived. "I’m not that nice. I will kill you, just as your father didn’t want to spare the son of my father..."
"But you didn’t die, did you?" Laurel’s eyes narrowed at him. "By some fate, you didn’t die. I promise you, by some fate, I won’t die also."
She was back with her threats. "Get out. To your prison."
He didn’t have to sound like he was ordering a little girl but she was sick of being in his presence anyway.
Every moment was tiring because she felt she was one sentence away from being strangled go death, especially when Sorren wasn’t around to stop him.
"This sucks so bad." Laurel muttered as she left the door. "I actually feel better out of his presence. Such irony."
Their type of mate bond must be different from the ones she heard in stories. Mates were definitely overrated.
Stefan didn’t know if she said that because she knew he could hear her or because she thought he couldn’t.
He felt bad that she thought that way even if he was glad she hates him. "No," he threw the towel, on his waist, to the bed. "I’m not glad she hates me. I’m not. "
