Chapter Twenty-Seven – Confidence
Darren was speechless. There was so much wrong.
He could only imagine how scared the princess must be now thinking someone was after her life.
"Why did the guard lie?"
"I don’t think he liked the princess." Jessika replied. "They had a fight once, he said."
So because of a petty fight, he had to lie, and now risk his life? "I feel guilty because I directed him to do this but he’s also at fault for being reckless."
He held the cook till she rose from the ground. "I’m sorry you’re frightened, Jessika. Just do one more thing for me then avoid the princess. Tell her about the plan in detail. That I was the one who poisoned her and why. I don’t want her living in fear. Okay?"
Jessika wiped her tears and wore determined expression. "If our plan work and she’s taken out of prison, I’d have many avenues to deliver the message. Leave it to me."
Darren nodded... just before his body shook violently.
"Got you!" Ella jumped on him, laughing.
He said "yayy!" with no excitement.
He turned to Jessika. "And about this Beta Cade, what’s he like? I don’t know if I met him the last time I visited."
"A Lycan. A Beta. And he’s very rough, even with women. He eats a lot too." Jessika enumerated with hatred.
Darren nodded. It must be the brass man he met at the Alpha’s place. He truly gave off such character.
"Is there a way to put something in his food... not you, not you." Darren added the last parts when Jessika turned pale. She must be so scared to dare annoy the Beta.
"I can’t do that even if I want to. Cade usually eats with Prince Sorren and..." Jessika’s face flushed. "I wouldn’t want to hurt that one. He’s not like the rest."
And it starts. Darren had a bored expression. Prince Sorren, it must be the young Lycan that could speak with him in Damancas language.
He was indeed a pretty fellow but difficult, still didn’t pose a violent threat. "Well, I wouldn’t want to mess with him as he’s close to the Alpha."
"They’re brothers." Jessika said, as a matter of fact. "Even if I’ve heard rumors that Sorren is a Lycan Hybrid."
He was indeed. Darren realized it the first time they met.
Still, he knew hybrids were mostly the most dangerous as they could have control like werewolves but still rage like Lycans. "Whatever he is, he isn’t our focus now. This Beta is. Even as Laurel is out, he might still come after her."
Jessika exhaled, still having her determined expression. "The princess might be taken to the maid quarters and it wasn’t very conducive either but better than any prison."
Being a maid was deteriorating as a royalty but it was still better than being a prion. "You can keep an eye on her, can’t you?"
"Certainly but not so close so I wouldn’t get in trouble. The Beta’s family is in there too." Jessika said.
Beta’s family? The Beta of Green Valleys was surely killed. His family would be his eldest daughter and young son. "They’re troublesome."
The daughter once placed him in huge trouble when they were younger, it nearly endangered Laurel. The princess would have to learn to fight her back.
"You can leave now Jessika. I wouldn’t want you to get in trouble as well."
Jessika made a bow. "Sure. Take care and bye, Ella."
The little girl, who’d been standing there clueless, smiled.
Jessika sped back to the pack. There was a secret passage that trained spies, like her, knew about.
Black Claws warriors would have no idea. Her heartbeat faster as she heard voices at her hostel. Had she been discovered to have left?
If it was a warrior, she’d take him. She was warrior ranked but if it was an official, it’d be very difficult. A gasp left her lips when she was it an official, but she relaxed.
"Delta Sigma, do you need something?" she walked into her room, hoping he’d ignore the direction she came from.
He did. "Ah, yes. Prince Sorren said to deliver soluble food to the Alpha’s quarters. Maybe, the Alpha’s sick."
Jessika knew it was for Laurel. She made a bow. "I’d arrange it immediately." The young man left.
This must her chance to speak with the princess, she didn’t plan to lose it.
Before the other cooks realized, she whipped an easy to digest meal and rushed to the Alpha’s quarters.
She knocked softly on the door. There was no response.
She peeked in and her eyes brightened. "Princess?"
Laurel’s head rested on the bed rest. Her mind had been wondering how they got to her father’s room again.
Jessika crawled in, head down. "Your highness, I was asked to deliver this meal here."
She hoped Laurel recognized her, she had served at her father’s palace for years.
Laurel looked up, then her eyes slowly expanded.
Jessika assumed she recognized her and nodded. "Yeah, it’s me. It’s me. How’ve you been, princess?"
"I was poisoned. I remember. Sorren, that pretty bastard." Laurel clenched her fists, leaving the bed.
Jessika held her arm. "No, not Sorren." She crept closer to her and began whispering.
Laurel’s face displayed numerous emotions before wearing relief. Jessika smiled, after her explanation. "So don’t worry, Princess. He was just looking our for you."
It made Laurel pleased but still displeased. What if the poison was overdosed and she didn’t survive?
But then, Darren was a perfectionist, he wouldn’t make such mistakes. Still, she didn’t like her life being gambled like that even if it was for her good.
"You know our life doesn’t belong to us." Elma spoke. "If Darren threatened our life to help us, it’s better. He must have realized we were important to Stefan.".
"Are we important to him though?" Laurel sighed. She looked around her, she was taken to his room again. Didn’t he have a fiancée? This was so risky, even for her.
She held Jessika’s hands. "I look forward to the maid quarters. I don’t care if the Beta’s daughter is there. I’d use her to get stronger. Thank Darren for me, next time."
The confidence exuding from the princess made Jessika’s eyes moist. She also knew the kind of life the princess had to live. "I’m rooting for you, Princess. I really am."
Laurel enveloped her in a hug. It had been a while she had someone who worried about her genuinely and was on her side. She missed Lena so much.
Jessika left afterwards and Laurel returned to bed like nothing had happened. The bathroom door opened and she closed her eyes.
"Still asleep?" Stefan sighed. "So weak for a wolf."
Laurel’s eyes shot open and she sprang from the bed. "Excuse me?" she looked away immediately. "Could you wear something, a shirt, maybe? It’s so centuries ago to leave the bathroom with only a towel on your waist. Especially, when you have someone in the room." Couldn’t he be a bit gentlemanly? Like his brother?
Stefan glanced at her while drying his hair with a towel, "You are aware you’re in my room, right?"
"You are aware you let me in your room, right?"
A line drew on Stefan’s forehead. Was she always this ungrateful or was it because it’s him?
