Chapter 276: Betrayed
Chapter Two Hundred-Seventy-Six – Betrayed
The witch Alice had been directed to stay with the young Beta by the Princess’ orders. Laurel trusted the Beta to guard her and his magic imbued weapons could affect her.
The only use for Alice was to heal Bebe and till she achieved that, she’d be given close vigilance.
Alice had informed that Bebe’s link with the Grand Witch was weak so it’d not take as much time as she thought to sever, all worked for Laurel as long as Bebe’s freed.
It’s already been three days since she arrived so the Princess had begun expecting results.
As Laurel sat there contemplating, she didn’t notice the small form sneaking out of the hall.
"Marino, where are you going?" she asked when she caught his scent. She frowned a bit. Who taught an innocent child like him how to sneak about?
She noticed his hands clench, was he going to fight someone? She left her seat and walked to him. He lowered his head as she came close.
"If you want us to see tree with Mira then..." she trailed off when his hands clenched even tighter. Was that hatred?
"Alpha promise..." He sniffed then looked up. "Alpha promise not to kill... he promise not to kill Princess... but Zeldis said scary man came from Alpha."
Tears streamed down Marino’s eyes and Laurel was lost of words, she felt her chest aching badly. This child was too young to feel betrayed.
Did he plan to go to the Alpha and confront him? For her sake? She hugged him, stroking his head to calm him down. "Don’t cry, Marino. Please, don’t cry."
Zeldris might’ve spoken absentmindedly by saying the Alpha sent the warrior, since she left to meet the Alpha.
And Marino wouldn’t know General Conrad and will only assume the culprit was the Alpha since they mentioned him.
Laurel wanted to correct that notion, not for the Alpha’s sake but for Marino’s, after all she wasn’t sure the Alpha didn’t also sort her life.
"Marino, it’s not the Alpha, okay? There’s a bad General trying to put Princess in trouble, he’s the one and not the Alpha, okay?" She tried to explain as much as she could.
Going into deeper details or sharing political implications wouldn’t be digested by him, despite how intelligent he seemed.
She noticed his sniffs stopped and she released him, still stroking his head. "Don’t worry, Princess is safe."
He nodded, but stared at her with glossy eyes that made Laurel feel he still didn’t believe her.
She didn’t blame him, with the atmosphere yesterday, she thought the Warrior really came to kill her.
Of course, it’d have been a total fail but it’d have set lots of things in motion and fights would break out.
"I am really okay. Don’t worry." She smiled.
"Alpha won’t kill Princess?" Marino asked to be sure.
Laurel hesitated, because she didn’t know that but she quickly recovered and nodded vehemently.
However, Marino noticed the hesitation and looked away.
Zeldris had told him that the Alpha took over their pack and controlled it, and even if Marino didn’t know what that meant, Zeldris had said it like it’s a bad thing.
Was the Alpha a bad person? He wanted to ask the Princess but he remembered that under the tree, the Princess had stayed away from the Alpha.
Maybe the Alpha was a bad person.
"Go and play with Mimi, okay?" Laurel pushed him back to the room, she noticed his slow steps and hoped that he’d get over it.
He was a child born during war so he will be smart enough to notice violence and tension, Mira had such sensitivity too.
As their new guardian, Laurel wanted to take those fears away from them, and she’d have to start by being secretive about her problems.
She left the door and trudged back to her seat.
Outside, she caught the scent of Jessika but with no scent of a meal, she didn’t feel very excited.
As she sat on her seat, Jessika rushed into the hall with Escanor. Laurel raised a brow as she didn’t catch his scent at first, and she still didn’t.
She quickly deduced that he’d have the charm with him.
"Princess," Escanor bent on one knee. "I have some news from Silent River Pack, and it’s a tad bit disturbing."
Disturbing news were becoming the usual these days, Laurel thought, as she kept her head on her arm being supported by the armrest.
And since it’s disturbing, then it had to do with witches or more specifically, that other Grand Witch that was heading to Ella’s mother.
"Say it." Laurel braced herself.
Escanor nodded and left where he stooped. "I left to meet Sir Darren since I’m faster," he glanced at Jessika who frowned, "and he said the Young Grand Witch arrived."
Laurel inhaled and exhaled. It’s as she had thought.
"But the thing is," Jessika started, "he didn’t care about finding the other Grand Witch and said she’d return on her own accord, even if she’s his... elder sister."
Laurel’s half closed eyes popped open. Elder sister?
"He recognized a little girl named Ella, who happened to be the Grand Witch’s daughter and Ella said he was indeed her uncle." Jessika sighed.
The Princess stared at the cook before turning to Escanor who nodded. That family really had some dangerous genes if they all excelled in magic.
Even little Ella had a personal teacher and Sir Darren had said that the King and Queen of Damancas had high hopes for her as the future Grand Witch someday.
Yet Laurel was yet to hear the disturbing part of it all, or would the Young Genius start a revenge against the lycans to support his older sister?
That’d be truly disturbing.
"Surprisingly, the Young Grand Witch doesn’t hate Lycans and that’s when things got weird." Jessika hesitated. "He said he’s going to visit Prince Sorren, as a friend."
"Friend?" Laurel asked back as she remembered.
So Sorren’s magic user friend was a Young Grand Witch? Did he know what the hell he’s doing?
