Chapter 272: To Break The Promise

Chapter Two Hundred-Seventy-Two – To Break The Promise

Zeldris glanced at the Princess again.

He felt uncomfortable to let her go but decided to trust that that lycan Alpha, his cousin’s brother, wouldn’t try killing the Princess in broad daylight.

Laurel followed the Warrior, who stayed behind her for someone who was to walk her. He realized and rushed to her front, and properly walked her to the palace.

At the Alpha’s study, Laurel turned to the Warrior again as he walked away. "Remember, I’d sort for your life." She didn’t mince words and added. "And I’d sort for it soon."

The other two guards at the Alpha’s study became alarmed, staring at the Warrior. They saw his guilty expression and silently prayed for him.

Laurel was permitted to enter the Alpha’s study. The guards rushed to the warrior to get a full story of what he did but he rushed out immediately.

Stefan’s emotion had swayed from excitement that his mate was close, to worry that she wanted his warrior’s life. What happened again?

With her expression, she probably didn’t plan to explain. She stood there, staring at him with lidded eyes though he saw the curiosity in her eyes.

The reason she was called wasn’t anything serious like General Conrad had made it to be, so the Alpha was more interested in why she wanted to kill his warrior.

He mind linked the guards outside to leave, and they did much to their dismay as they wanted to listen in and know their colleague’s crime.

When they were gone, Stefan left his seat and pulled out a chair for Laurel. "You can sit—"

"I can stand... Alpha."

He left the chair free for her and sat on the table besides the chair like she was there. His eyes tarried on her, did something happen on the way?

"You know you can’t just kill a warrior because you’re of a higher rank." He kept his voice low. "What’s his crime?"

"It’s a personal grudge, don’t worry you wouldn’t know it was me." She replied with a straight face.

That didn’t sound comforting and Stefan wondered if she said that to comfort him. He patted his forehead that were aching now.

He didn’t want to say something that’d lead to an argument because they seemed to argue more than married couples even while they weren’t even dating.

"I’d punish him for you. What did he do?" he asked, after deciding that’d be the best move. He didn’t have to resort to death either. "Hmm, what?" he pressed on.

The Princess’ neck gently turned to him, and Stefan peered intently at the darkness in her eyes. Someone threatened her life, he knew that look all too well.

But there’s no way that warrior would do so, would he?

A darkness in his eyes had stayed with Stefan since the destruction of his pack, especially as talks that the General had been involved.

He always felt like someone was unto him and his little brother. He had been somewhat appreciative when Sorren became a loner, as it kept him safe.

For his mate to have such a look, either her life or that of someone she cared about had been threatened.

"Alpha," he heard her call and became alert to respond.

"When will you keep your promise to kill me?" Laurel asked, her darkened eyes boring holes into his own.

Stefan’s expression flattened, and he felt heat go to his chest. To kill his mate? If he made such a promise, hadn’t he done enough to show he broke it?

He exhaled, meeting her gaze. He didn’t like questions like that, because she didn’t want it either. "If I try to take your life, will you let me—"

He didn’t have to finish the question before her facial expression gave him an answer. He sighed deeply. He shouldn’t let the topic hang in the air for long.

"I’m not after your life, Laurel." He said clearly. "On the contrary, I want to make it up to you. You’re my mate."

A small light lit in Laurel’s eyes but it died quickly, as did the heaviness that she felt in her stomach. The Alpha never told her was a joker, or was this his sadist side?

Did he like to make her feel hopeful only to destroy it?

After all he had done, he dared to call himself her mate? She remembered that he spelt it out numerous times that they were enemies. She didn’t need a new title now.

She could live with being enemies.

"You called me here." She reminded, then exhaled to calm her heart from the brief excitement and growing anger she and Elma now felt.

"Did you hear me, Laurel?" Stefan frowned when he noticed she’s trying to change the topic. He noticed her fists clench. "You still hate—"

"Why did you call me here?" she rephrased, increasing her voice tone. "Let me guess, you felt lonely so decided to pick up the trash you left at your disposal?"

She hated referring to herself as trash but for months, that was what he made her feel like and she planned to act like one till she’s free from him.

She might never be able to reject her mate or handle a rejection but if he left her life, she’d soon return to a state when he never came.

And she’d be happy again.

Stefan’s eyes dimmed and he looked away. He didn’t know how to react to that. Wasn’t it obvious that he didn’t see her that way anymore?

Gifting gifts definitely didn’t work as an apology to her and no matter he said, she wouldn’t believe him and would use other words to counter.

His eyes went down. "Laurel." He saw her eyes flash in annoyance. Did she also hate him calling her name? "What will I do to earn your trust again?"

Laurel looked away. He even spoke about trust, not forgiveness? Then he probably didn’t regret attacking her pack because ’it’s revenge for his family’.

Did he really want to know her condition? Would he do it?
