Chapter 271: Abyss
Chapter Two Hundred-Seventy-One – Abyss
As the thought swam in Laurel head, the sudden revelation when a witch would tell Sorren, she also remembered that Zeldris had said talented.
So how talented?
The witches Sorren had fought with didn’t tell him or he’d have spoken about it. The Grand Witch might’ve realized, but tried to kill him anyway.
"There’s no law not to kill a fellow witch, right?" she asked. With no law those witches could do anything.
Zeldris shook his head.
"There is. The witches aren’t talented or they might not have attacked him by rules of the Witch Order. Powerful magic can detect magic, even its residues."
As Zeldris said that, The Princess felt relieved, she turned back. So Sorren should avoid Damancas and no one will figure him out.
She paused again, but he had gone there and nothing came after his life. Could it be his magic residue?
Was that the reason he could move freely without being harassed by a witch? She scratched her head. She didn’t need to know all these.
"Zeldris, don’t speak of this with me again." She said sternly. "I don’t fancy Sorren enough to know his story and secrets. If you have his weakness, then we can talk."
Zeldris gulped down saliva, his poor cousin. He turned when he heard the door the Princess walked to slam open, almost hitting her.
He smiled. The soldiers have awoken. He left where he laid just in time for little Marino to crash on him with his small swords.
"I’m captain." The little boy pointed at Zeldris. "You thief."
Zeldris had a defeated expression, it was the ninth time they were playing the tag and chase game and he always ended up as thief. Yet he nodded in acceptance.
Laurel raised little Mira to her chest with a content sigh. If they were awake then they must have gotten over the cold they experienced last night.
A part of her had feared that something out of the ordinary had made them fall sick at the same time.
Little Mira rubbed her head on the Princess’ shoulders. "I want to see too. Princess, I want to see tree."
Laurel turned to Marino with a betrayed expression, the little boy was already chasing Zeldris out of the hall. The Princess patted Mira, looking for an excuse.
As she recovered from a cold, being exposed to a chilly night under the tree would bring it back again, and worse.
"You’d see tree soon. We’d go again, all of us."
The girl made a small sound and Laurel closed her eyes tightly at how cute she sounded. She noticed Marino’s cheerful screams had stopped.
Her head snapped to the entrance when she caught a new scent, she saw Zeldris looking towards the gate.
She held Mira tightly as she ran to the door.
A Black Claws Warrior walked in, then bowed when he sighted her. "Princess Laurel, I am here to escort you to the Alpha’s Study."
Laurel gave him a sidelong glance. What the hell did he mean by waltzing in here without a notice? His presence scared Marino and the boy hid behind Zeldris.
"If I don’t follow you?" She patted Mira’s head on her shoulder when the girl tried looking around on sensing the change in atmosphere.
Laurel felt they must be a reason that they sent a warrior to bring her, and one she’d never met. He’s probably the new batch from High Mountains that were always haughty.
If she refused, would they be consequences issued? She watched the warrior nod. "I have orders from General Conrad to force you, if you don’t come willingly."
He dared say that to her face? Laurel raised her hand to stop Zeldris from acting, she kept little Mira on the ground.
This was an order from General Conrad, not the Alpha and she wasn’t in any position to obey the General.
But since she was to meet the Alpha, and she’s curious to know her crime, she’d go along with it. She glanced at Zeldris and signaled for him to take the twins in first.
"You are to come alone." The Warrior added when he noticed she signaled for Zeldris to follow her.
"No." Laurel refused before Zeldris could. "For all I know you might be trying to kill you, good sir."
It’d cost them nothing to claim that it’s the Alpha’s study they’re going to, only to get slaughtered by the General who was stronger than her and resented her.
She couldn’t take the chances now Green Valleys worked well, and they even had Rolling Stones to take care of.
"You don’t expect the Princess of Green Valleys’ to just walk with you to Goddess-knows-where, do you?" Zeldris returned to the Warrior.
The Warrior looked defiant, he had clear orders and hoped to follow them, he reached for his sword. "Calmly follow me, Princess."
The action made Zeldris to rush back, holding Marino and Mira behind him. The two had already began sobbing.
Seeing his hand reach for his sword readily and almost drawing it out, Laurel had conflicting thoughts.
Didn’t that go to far to want to use his sword on her? She stared at the twins who had wet faces and her blood boiled, but she had to remain calm.
"Wait, Zeldris." She held her Knight when he stepped forward again. "I keep forgetting I’m not a free person."
The look the warrior gave her seemed to say ’of course, you aren’t’. It made Laurel smile bitterly.
She might’ve forgotten that the lycans had been busy with High Mountains’ development and forgot to torment her and her people after they became their captives.
Now, it’d start, but she had to remain strong.
"I’d go with you." She stepped forward but almost immediately she did, she felt a small hand clutching her dress and pulling her backwards.
She carried Marino and moved back, worried that the Warrior might hit him. The Warrior had an indifferent expression while staring at the boy.
Laurel wiped Marino’s eyes and kissed his forehead, she knew nothing serious would happen. Those lycans couldn’t kill her since High Mountains hadn’t stabilized yet.
Zeldris took the boy from her hold and left inside with the two children. Laurel slowly turned to the Warrior.
"Know this, I’d do the same thing you nearly did to me. I’d make sure you lose your life soon enough."
The Warrior’s narrowed his eyes at her but his grip on his sword loosened as he stared into her eyes that were like an abyss.
