Chapter 26: The Plan

Chapter Twenty-Six – The Plan

(At the Silent River Pack)

Most building weren’t destroyed in the attack. Especially the one belonging to Alpha Denzel. That’s the only saving grace or else he’d have to begin building.

Darren pranced about looking for Ella, who had gone hide and seek from him. His eyes went to the old man, he met at Green Valleys, and his daughter who were helping clear out his father’s mansion. He exhaled.

There’d been no message from Laurel since he visited. The Alpha was truly Lycan and had a very condescending aura despite him being easy going.

Or was he acting easy going while being a raging demon? Lycans had shitty tempers.

If not Darren was versed in Damancas art, Stefan would have known he was a powerful werewolf and wouldn’t buy his traveler story, and being warrior or lower ranked.

His mother’s place was known for borderline sorcery, poisons and charms. One of Darren’s favorite charm was masking one’s aura.

As a Lycan Hunter, he’d wear the charm and approach a Lycan under the guise of being an omega wolf looking for help or looking for next meal.

Many times, the Lycans attacked, deeming him a weak werewolf they could play with but they always got the last surprise of their lives.

"Caught you!" Ella jumped before him and shrieked.

It caught Darren off guard but he masked it off with a smile. "Took you long enough."

The little girl laughed then began running off again. "Let’s go again and hide properly this time!"

Daren made a ’hmm’ sound and diverted to his room. He ran his hands through his hair, looking outside the window. The carrier pigeon should have returned with news on Laurel. Since he got one-third of the kingdom, he had kept the prison guard watch over Laurel there.

The guard had been a spy his father had at Green Valleys and he lost his family during the new Lycan Alpha’s attack.

"It’s a simple job." Darren murmured. "Why hasn’t he written back already?" He always did.

Laurel was definitely important to the Lycan Alpha since he didn’t want to swap her with one-third of the land.

The land should be more important than their prisoner because the land was proof of his conquer but instead he gave it out for his prisoner.

He couldn’t understand Lycans at all. "I can’t place why but it might have to do with marrying the daughter of the place you conquered to humiliate her?"

Darren cocked his head. That might not be right either but bottom line was, the Alpha wouldn’t allow anything to happen to Laurel.

And then comes the risky part. Would the other officials let her be? The prison guard had informed him that she was once brutally beaten by members of her pack and got harassed by the Beta.

Meaning she wasn’t safe in the prison where they could find her anytime. She needed to leave.

Hence, the plan he made at the spot, before leaving the palace on the day he became the official owner of Silent River Pack – the plan, feeding Laurel doses of poison.

The effect should be serious enough to convince the Alpha that Laurel shouldn’t stay in the prison.

"And since Laurel agreed to this, then she would play it right." Darren muttered. He made sure he asked the guard to let Laurel know of the plan beforehand.

The lunchboxes, he would give her randomly, each had delicious food but laced with measured amount of poison that wouldn’t act immediately.

Today should be the day it’d act if she’d eaten everything and would also be the day she gets to leave the prison.

If the plan didn’t work, Darren had another riskier plan up his sleeve but all for the benefit of the princess.

"Huh? Did he go to his room?" Darren overhead Ella outside his room. "But I told him he can’t go in there."

Shit. He climbed his window and fell before she’d open the door. Babysitting while plotting was such a task.

If only his mother and sister survived the attack but it seemed their father wasn’t close when the attack happened or he’d have created an escape for them.

"Prince Darren?"

Darren turned. "Hmm?"

The old man strolled to him with a smile. "The porch is nice and clean now. My daughter said there are ten big rooms in the main building..."

"You and your daughter can take two rooms. Let your daughter’s friend take another. If you have other family, let them stay here." Darren offered.

The old man looked perplexed. "R-Really? We should..."

Darren smiled. "I hated the house because only my sister, mother, and I lived in this big place. My father and older brother were never around. So, I don’t mind company."

The old man sniffed. It meant a lot to him. His home was taken by the warriors of Black Claws. He had to live in his small shop with his daughter and it was uncomfortable. "Thank you, Prince Darren. I am grateful."

"I’m grateful that you accepted it." Darren made a small bow. "Please, excuse me. I think a letter came for me."

He hurried to the young woman who was turning her head frantically looking for him.

She was a cook at Green Valleys Palace who prepared the lunch that was given to Laurel. Another spy his father had planted that survived the attack from Black Claws.

"Jessika." He called.

Her eyes landed on him and she fell to the ground. He slowed his steps. Did something happen? And she wasn’t with any letter from the guard?

"Why did you leave the palace? If they find you visiting here, they’d suspect you." Darren helped her to her feet.

Her face was wet with tears and she trembled slightly. "I don’t know if I can return. The guard must have been caught. He was taken out by Beta Cade. He’s dead."

Dead? Was caught? Darren left his hold on the lady and she fell back to the ground, bawling.

How could the guard have been caught? His plan was perfect with no holes. The guard was in charge of feeding her anyway so who would have noticed?

"Was that Alpha so keenly interested in Laurel down to what she eats? How was he caught?" Darren demanded.

Jessika sniffed. "He lied to us."

The guard lied? Darren stooped to her level. "Please, stop crying and tell me. What’s the situation with the princess?"

"That part worked. She bled and was taken to the Alpha’s quarters. I made sure I saw it with my own eyes before the Alpha’s brother told everyone to leave the quarters."

Laurel was taken to the Alpha’s quarters? That was risky. Darren clenched fists. What if he was a perverted idiot?

"But the guard lied about telling the princess that she was being poisoned. Also, he never mentioned the princess was transferred to a new prison. He’s no longer in charge of her so he had to sneak to give her the lunchbox. I think that’s how he was caught and as the princess bled, he was assumed to have poisoned her then got killed."

Darren was speechless. There was so much wrong. He could only imagine how scared the princess must be now thinking someone was after her life.
