Chapter 258: The Day It All Started

Chapter Two Hundred-Fifty-Eight – The Day It All Started.

The Lead Warrior took a step back. Shouldn’t he have? It was only a birthday celebration.

Stefan exhaled, rubbing the bridge of his nose. He hadn’t been sure of when exactly Sigma’s birthday would be but he knew it was coming.

He’d have preferred it at High Mountains where the pack could celebrate with Sigma, as usual. Celebrating at Green Valleys will remind all its inhabitants of that day.

"Did you forget? The day we raided this Kingdom was on the Princess’ birthday. Will you still look fondly upon birthdays if it were you?"

Baxter’s face fell as he squeezed it harshly. So it was on that day! The day it all started!

The details had flown off the top of his head due to his determination and excitement to host it.

Another birthday celebration happening months after the one that issued in the fall of their kingdom will not be looked upon fondly indeed.

No wonder the Princess acted that way.

"I’d cancel it." He said with slumped shoulders. "Let Prince Sorren handle it instead. I’d tell the Princess."

Stefan didn’t expect the quick decision but he appreciated it. All he had known then was there’d be a celebration at the Kingdom he’d raid.

No one had spoken about it like it was the birthday celebration of a Princess, probably because it wasn’t as he saw. They seemed to be auctioning her or something.

Perhaps if he had known it was a birthday celebration, he might have shifted his raid. Perhaps.

Baxter left his study and the eerie feeling returned within Stefan. He exhaled, rubbing his sweaty palms on his clothes, the feeling was supposed to be gone by now.

It was easier to handle now, but the fact it remained annoyed him, because he’d sort a solution to it again.

The eerie feeling of loneliness.

He noticed it when his parents had been killed and his best friend murdered for his sake, but he assumed it was just an aftermath of trauma.

Yet it remained years after he didn’t feel the searing pain of his loss, only the gnawing anger, bottomless guilt and emotionless countenance of that day.

Staying around people helped, but he was the next Alpha that should have some sense of obscurity. Being with his younger brother helped, but Sorren liked being alone.

Engaging Jade had been a solution to his problem, and it was good that she got attached to him so stayed close all the while.

That had helped him through planning the raid... but now, he was alone again.

"Um... Alpha, I think there’s an issue there. I’d be back soon." A guard outside his study said as he rushed out.

Stefan exhaled again, the solution to solve his loneliness was having guards stay at the door. It barely helped.

"Oh, really?" he heard the guard was back again.

"Hmm... I made it with Mimi but... she sleep again." A little red-haired boy poked his head into Stefan’s study. He was pulled back almost immediately.

Stefan’s heart skipped a beat when the boy suddenly disappeared, he rose from his seat. Was it a coincidence that the boy visited when he needed someone?

It’d be pathetic to ask for someone around so the Moon Goddess brought the child? Or did he overthink it?

"S-Sorry, Alpha." The guard apologized. "The issue was a maid from the Princess brought... um... yes, Marino, a boy named Marino to—’"

"Bring him in!"

The guard paused, then straightened up. He looked down at the small man, could he really be a friend to the Alpha? The guard smiled, pushing the boy into the room.

Little Marino held his small basket tightly, feeling nervous after hearing Stefan’s tone. "Um... good day... I brought... snacks—" he rushed to Stefan’s open arm.

Stefan held the boy closely. It was odd, but not in a bad way, he kept the boy on his table and kept his hands around him. "Did the Princess say you should visit?"

Little Marino shook his head.

Stefan found it strange that he felt happier to know the Princess didn’t tell him to. "So you came all by yourself?"

But the boy shook his head again, making Stefan’s smile fall. It didn’t matter though, he felt better already.

"I told Princess I want to share," he opened his basket, "Miss Jessi baked. Snacks. Mimi and I helped." he nodded. "then Miss Casi brought me. I can’t walk far."

Stefan noticed the boy exhale after speaking for long. So he wanted to come, but he didn’t walk himself. Stefan smiled, he should ask him questions more specifically.

The little boy was smart and it reminded him of Sorren, but even Sorren had his childish moments of snatching random pretty things he found.

He raised his palm and the boy gladly placed his on it.

"Thank you for the snacks." Stefan left his seat and pulled the bed now permanent in his study towards his table, he relocated the boy from his desk to the bed.

"I brought swords."

Stefan froze when he head that. Swords? He turned to find small sticks tied with colorful ribbons at the end.

They were blunt but he’d appreciate it if the child played with anything else. He checked his shelf for some balls.

"Who made those for you?"

"Zeldis and me." Little Marino said proudly. "Zeldis said he can see my hair, so he made me swords for seeing it."

Stefan tried to make sense out of it but shook it off. Since he’d been seeing that Zeldris, he no longer had the dumb cloth over his eyes.

Had he really been blind before? Then what changed?

He watched the boy’s eyes lit up as he took the balls from him, a sense of pride filled Stefan when the boy casted the swords aside. "Thank you... Alpha."

Stefan hesitated. Surely they’d have told the boy who he was, but if the boy was still happy with him, then it’s fine.

"Hmm." He rubbed the boy’s head. "Thank you too."
