Chapter 257: Request

Chapter Two Hundred-Fifty-Seven – Request

Laurel tried wrapping her head around Zeldris’s words, they had returned to Green Valleys with no cousin and without formally telling Sorren they were leaving.

All Zeldris made her understand was that the cousin wasn’t a solution anymore, she probably didn’t exist.

Laurel didn’t think Zeldris will be silly to have her search for an imaginary cousin for long and construct a story around it. It couldn’t be his imagination.

He also hadn’t let out how that Elder concerned anything that happened. Laurel felt she was in square one again.

He had returned to the prison to stay with Bebe, so Laurel stayed at Valkyrie’s quarters thinking of her next action.

A maid ran into the hall when she almost dozed off.

"Princess, the Lead Warrior of Black Claws is here on an impromptu meeting with you. Should I let him?"

Laurel stared at her blankly. What special news did the Lead Warrior need to tell her? There was no pressing issues now. "Let him in, dear."

Laurel’s eyes closed when the maid left, they were jolted open when she heard someone clear their throat. "Lead Warrior Baxter, good news, I hope?"

The Princess thought back on what she must’ve done wrong. The Rolling Stones feeding had been handled.

She sent the first batch of supplies yesterday and today, two more will be sent for this week.

Some Green Valleys’ warriors had been deployed, and she kept Lia there to inspect the armory production when it’d start. Lia had an eye that detected inferior goods.

Laurel looked back at the Lead Warrior, could something have happened in that pack? He was yet to respond to her and only moped with obvious hesitation.

"How is Sigma doing? I guess he’s doing better since Prince Sorren left." She raised a brow.

The Lead Warrior clicked his tongue. "Could we not talk about that one? And yes, Sigma is getting better now."

That one? Laurel deduced it’d be Sorren.

The Lead Warrior was probably the only warrior not fond of the Prince. She had heard and seen how displaced the other warriors had been when Sorren got hurt.

She still didn’t know why snobbish Sorren had some love from them but she knew she only needed to ask before the warriors will begin fawning.

"Anyway, Lead Warrior, you’ve been standing there for quite a—"

"I have a request to make of you, Princess!"

She frowned at being interrupted. Why did his mouth open when she decided to speak? "I do not promise to fulfil it. What is it?"

Baxter hesitated. How could he freely request if she, unapologetically, said that she might not fulfil it? "W-Well, there’s a bir... birthday celebration..."

"You want me to attend your birthday party?" Laurel wanted to hide her humored and annoyed she felt, but her face betrayed her. "That’s a no, then."

Baxter froze. That wasn’t his request but he didn’t think that would get a no. He exhaled, deciding to ask anyway and get rejected than not asking at all.

"Princess, my cousin is turning seventeen. I’d like to use the grand hall to celebrate his birthday party instead of using the one at High Mountains." Baxter explained.

Using the one at High Mountains would mean it’d be Sorren that’d host and organize it, and that’s what Baxter wanted to avoid the most.

It felt he missed all his cousin’s birthdays because Prince Sorren always made them too flashy for an orphan and warrior’s son, like him, to feel comfortable in.

Prince Sorren might not be making preparations yet since the birthday date was still a month away, but after healing completely, he was sure to make a move.

Baxter needed to beat him to it. Preparations and all.

Laurel studied the Lead Warrior, and noted the resolve and determination on his face. Wasn’t it just a celebration he wanted to organize? Not a war, right?

Her seventeenth birthday was a surprise cake made by Lena. They had eaten it while hiding and talking about books, it was small but memorable to Laurel.

Eighteenth was disaster and Laurel didn’t hope to speak of her birthday ever since it was the day their Kingdom fell to ruins.

"I will let you use the grand hall, but as I said, I wouldn’t be attending." Laurel replied finally.

Baxter wore relief but also confusion. Why couldn’t she attend? Indirectly, she’d be a co-host so wouldn’t she want to be there to see everything through? "Can I ask why?"

She didn’t think she needed to explain herself to him. Laurel subtly massaged her aching shoulders. "I am not a family or close friend of Sigma’s, am I?"

The Lead Warrior said nothing so she added. "You might see my officials if they deem it fit, I believe it’s a Black Claws exclusive celebration?"

Baxter quickly countered, shaking his head. The Princess was more rigid than he thought. Didn’t parties interest young girls like her? "All can attend."

Laurel shrugged. "If the people of Green Valleys want to, then they’d attend. I hope that is all?"

Baxter still felt disappointed that she will not be attending, but she had spoken with finality that he didn’t want to refute. "That is all. Thank you for your understanding."

Looking into the Princess’ eyes, there was only a blank space in it. He couldn’t place if it was anger or a clear mind, or perhaps, a mind wanting to be clear.

Surely she had nothing against Sigma.

"Then," he made a short bow, "I’m thankful you listened to me even if my visit was impromptu. I’d take my leave now." He got no response.

To avoid having more conflicted thoughts, he left the quarters straight to the Alpha’s palace. The Princess was more of an enigma than he thought.

"Is the Alpha in?" Baxter asked the guards standing at the study’s entrance. They weren’t usually guards stationed.

But they nodded and gestured for him to go in, which Baxter did while drowning his questions.

"Alpha, it’s nothing serious but I needed you to know that Sigma’s birthday celebration will be held at Green Valleys’ grand hall. The Princess approved it."

Stefan paused. Birthday celebration? His eyes shifted to Baxter. "You didn’t speak to her directly about it, did you?"

Baxter took a step back. Shouldn’t he have?
