Chapter 253: Gratitude
Chapter Two Hundred-Fifty-Three – Gratitude
The maid served the Alpha and Sorren tea, and bowed before taking a whip hanging on a nail. Stefan knitted his brows as she went towards her young master.
What in the world did she want to do to him?
"Young Master!!" she flung the whip besides Darren and with blinding speed Darren raised himself from the couch.
Ella stopped kneading his head and laughed at him, he rose her to his laps and buried his face on her neck, hiding his still sleepy face. The girl laughed, patting his head.
"Alice, that wasn’t nice of you, at all." He murmured.
The maid gently replaced the whip on the nail. "It’s not my fault that you’re still terrified of your father’s whip, Young Master. Now, your guests are here. I’d leave you to it."
The maid left and Darren slowly turned to the two lycans who had concerned looks. He released Ella to run along with Alice, due to her identity.
He rubbed his eyes. "Truly sorry you had to see that, Alice isn’t my most refined maid."
He exhaled, she wasn’t even a maid, but the witch-warrior the Queen of Damancas forced on him after she found out that he had another lycan visit from the King of Lycans.
Alice would also be Ella’s teacher when no one was around, and she was a warrior before being a witch so will be protecting he and Ella.
The Queen had also added in her note that Alice was single and had lost her mate few years back, so he could do his best to woo her to be his wife.
As if he cared!
Darren cleared his throat, returning to the reality that he had two lycan officials still staring at him worriedly. He left the couch, and stayed on the table with them.
"The girl," Stefan dropped his cup of tea, "is she really your servant? Or perhaps she has become like family?"
It warmed Darren that the Alpha had been bothered by Alice’s act but he didn’t want to dig deep into it to avoid spilling more than he should.
"She is like family. Don’t mind her." He waved his hand dismissively then studied the Prince. "You look beautiful today, as always. I guess you feel better now?"
Stefan nearly choked on his tea when he heard Darren. Was that his way of asking for his health, while sneaking a compliment in it?
But he covered his choke with a cough, he should get used to people telling his brother that, since he’d not indulge Sorren so it wouldn’t get into his head.
"Truly, it tasted horrible and looked worse but it managed to do the work. I’m grateful for the help." Sorren nodded, touching his side.
Darren had a tired expression. Couldn’t the Prince give his thanks without adding complaints? He accepted it anyway, at least, he had his gratitude.
That would be useful in the near future.
"Without wasting more of your time," Sorren added, "can I ask what you know about the witches that attacked our pack? Anything at all. Jessika must’ve told you."
Darren shook his head. Why did he expect Jessika to be that informed, or to care about informing him? "I heard there was an issue at High Mountains from my guard."
Truly, on the day the fire descended from the sky, its radiance was clear enough for Finn’s father to have noticed and he reported to their leader immediately.
"So, I was curious to know what festival happened till Jessika came with that news. Since it was a burn, I asked for help from my contacts at Damancas, and they helped."
Sorren narrowed his eyes at him. He asked for help from witches for the sake of a lycan, and the witches agreed to help? It wouldn’t be a lie but Sorren disliked it.
"I guess I was hurt and helped by witches." He hissed.
Darren quickly added. "Just like werewolves and lycans, witches have their troublesome sets and helpful sets. As there’s no war in Damancas, many witches are calm."
Stefan didn’t feel at rest with that. If war happened at Damancas, they’d have to move. Of course, as Damancas’ forces, it’d be reasonable.
Except that witches were exclusive weapons used to fight lycans and not werewolves. He snapped from his thought when he noticed Darren struggled to say something.
"It’s fine, tell me. I’d like to repay your assistance to me so far." Stefan offered, hoping it’d convince him.
Darren hummed, adjusting himself on his seat. They’d be no disadvantage in saying this as it doesn’t concern him, but the source he got could be a problem.
The Alpha might not bother ask him the source but his curious younger brother might ask since Lunaria was miles away and he couldn’t just get information.
Well then, the King of Damancas knew about it so he could say that’s his source. "You know of the bred lycan experiment that stopped years ago?"
Stefan nodded. His father had been one of those who raided the factions at Lunaria that still continued after the Kingdom itself signed a treaty to stop.
"Well, while I can’t say that it resumed but it had been confirmed that some surviving bred lycans has magic now. It might’ve been their personal decision or—"
Darren flinched when Sorren suddenly rose to his feet. He looked at the Alpha who only had shock on his face. The Alpha pulled Sorren down slowly.
"Keep on speaking, please."
Darren gulped down nothing and continued. "If it’s forcing them to trade their wolf for magic, then it’s like the cruel practice wolves from witch line did to their offspring."
A frown crept to Sorren’s face. So the practice happened to werewolves too? He assumed it was forced on the bred lycans as they were Lunaria’s puppets.
"My point is, Lunaria seems to be trying to make lycans accept magic by making other lycan have magic. It might not be so bad, after all. I wouldn’t know though."
Stefan exhaled, smiling a bit.
It’s nice of their ally to try to ease their mind off magic but having lycans use it didn’t make it less dangerous, especially if those lycans are a werewolf King’s puppets.
