Chapter Two Hundred-Forty-One – Be Useful

(Snow Top Mountain)

Sam paced around the lab while clutching the letter in her hand. Amber left to retrieve something for the King.

She wasn’t let in on the information but she knew it wasn’t anything serious, yet the guard that Amber should return to by night fall wrote back that he never returned.

Sam’s heart couldn’t help but panic. What if he had been seen as an enemy and held back? Would the King go to save him?

"I-I’d go!" she clenched her fists.

She had confidence in her speed. She could reach there before noon and clear whatever misunderstanding Amber fell in, then bring him back.

The door to the lab opened and she jolted a bit. She stared at Asher’s face that was reddening. She moved her hand to touch his forehead. Maybe he caught a cold.

Yes!" Asher’s outburst made her pull her hand back. "Finally, I have perfected that drug. Now, when she—"

Asher looked down at Sam, he smirked and leaned towards her. "Any problem, Sammy?"

Sam’s face flushed and she pushed the letter forward. "A-Amber is yet to co-come back. Something... happened."

Her eyes was down and she didn’t notice the glint that glowed in the King’s eyes. "Oh, is that so? I’d ask Nene to go find his body around, if they were nice to drop it."

Sam’s whole being ran cold. Body? Amber’s body? She looked up with widened eyes. "A-Are you sure he’s dead? Wh-What was the mission about that it killed him—"

"I remember saying it’s a secret one, didn’t I?" Asher frowned at her. Sam dragged her eyes down.

"If he died then it’s because the person he was to meet killed him, I didn’t plan for that to happen, did I? Why will I want him dead?" Asher sounded irritated.

Just when he found innocent looking fools to use, that Silent River traveler killed him anyway. That meant he’d need to use Sam for something else.

Since Slime’s memories came back and he could identify the witch was a little girl, that made it better. Asher had beautiful plans to mold her into his personal witch.

He could perform his experiments on her but nothing too painful that’d make her turn against him. All Amber’s job was retrieving the little brat, but he failed to do that.

He heard Sam’s silent cries and rolled his eyes. "Sam, you said I shouldn’t see you as a weak girl but as someone who can be useful to me, right?"

He turned to her, and she quickly wiped her eyes.

"Crying wouldn’t be useful to me. If you were strong enough, I’d have sent you and Amber on that mission and it wouldn’t have ended this way."

Sam’s eyes dimmed down on the letter. "I-I’m sorry."

Asher smiled. "You should. Nene will always be there to teach you what you need to know, while I’m busy figuring out what happened to your brothers."

Sam nodded.

"Or should I go about figuring out how to solve the witches’ problem and leave your brothers to their fate?"

Sam shook her head vehemently.

"Good. Let’s all be useful." Asher walked out her presence. In actuality, he had been spending more time completing one of his drugs than looking for anybody.

Nero had been on that and he got a good enough lead. Whoever have been capturing lycans in his kingdom was a lycan in his kingdom.

Asher jumped down the stairs to avoid wasting time. His drug was currently in cold water to cool, and his body had been trembling pleasurably while awaiting results.

"Nero, yes." He smiled, spinning towards the confused lycan. "So did you find something more?"

Nero looked from him to the files in his hands in his hands. "Something more like..?"

Asher’s smile faded a little. "Like... the location of the kidnapped lycans or the identity of the kidnapper."

Was he supposed to find all that? Nero rubbed the back of his neck. The King had only said to find out who, but not in context of who exactly.

He noticed Asher’s smile had fallen off completely, and looked downwards. "I’m sorry, your highness. I’d do well to find better information next time."

Asher breathed out. Not like it mattered to him. He could blame the delay in information and finding her brothers on Nero if Sam asked.

The King’s eyes swept over the form Nero held. "And that is? I hope nothing from that Delta Zara."

Nero looked up with a small smile. "She’s the only one who ever bothers to send notices, isn’t she?"

Asher snatched the files and tore it open. One of these days, he’d really stomp to her quarters and pull her hair, or tie her to her bed and reteach her how to respect a King.

"Useless, useless, the Alpha of Black Claws has been boring me lately. I sent a letter to the Princess and he replied with ’she can’t come’ and give useless reasons?"

Asher flung the file aside. Was the Princess his child who needed his permission to do something? Or was she his wife who he couldn’t trust to go out alone?

He had a werewolf fiancée but it was definitely not the Princess so why couldn’t he let her see him?

"Your highness, is there a reason you needed to see that Princess? You can always get information about any witch through letters to their Alpha." Nero reminded.

That Princess was talented at stirring trouble, and he didn’t want her to make the King do something wrong.

Asher shrugged. "Just because, I have no real reason why I want to see her. Maybe because, my plan has been going quite well and I was to gloat on her face."

Nero sighed. That would be why. Slime was gone and the King didn’t have personal listening ears anymore. The new kids he brought, he didn’t deem them useful.

"And the other notices?" Nero stretched out more files.

Asher stared at them for a while, then smirked. "Let Nene handle them. She’s been less busy, right?"

Nero nodded internally. He already guessed he’d say that and was already on his way to give them to his sister.

He bowed as the King left, bouncing out proudly.
