Chapter 236: Stubborn Brother
Chapter Two Hundred-Thirty-Six – Stubborn Brother
(Green Valleys)
Laurel raised her gown to let her walk faster.
"I’m not worried, I’m not worried, I’m not worried." She kept on muttering as she hurried to the palace.
What did those Black Claws Warriors mean by the Alpha came back after fighting with witches?
When Bebe had told him about the possibility of witches being involved, did she make it sound an invitation to look for them to him?
Laurel breathed in and out, when she was outside the study. She glared at the warriors who let her in.
"Alpha Stefan, it’s Princess Laurel and I’m here with—"
"Come in."
Laurel swallowed down the remaining words and arranged her hair, in case it looked like she run-walked all the way. She briskly walked into the study.
Her eyes landed on him but didn’t seem to be in any fatal position and worked on his notices like normal, she cursed at the Warriors for making her worry.
As he wrote, Laurel noticed the frequent clang of metal she heard. She bent to his side and saw his right hand was chained and the other end connected to the ground.
Did he chain himself to not move? Laurel took a step to the side to get a better look. She tried successfully to hold in her laughter when she saw Sorren’s hand at the end.
Why did these brothers chain each other? And Sorren had been laid on a soft mattress below his brother’s table and he was fast asleep.
Laurel assumed a serious expression and studied Stefan. He didn’t look like he was in the mood for jokes so he probably had good reasons for chaining Sorren.
"Is High Mountains under someone else’s care?"
Stefan stared at nothing, before nodding. "Yes, I gave the Elders’ authority, while my stubborn brother rested."
Laurel once again stopped herself from laughing. It was rare to see Stefan actually offended at Sorren’s antics and since he needed rest, he was probably the one injured.
She wondered if she should ask further or just go into what brought her here. The cases were still related.
"The Alpha of Rolling Stones is a witch."
Laurel’s amused expression disappeared from her face. She clenched the letter in her hand. How had that happen? Bebe lived with her for years and didn’t notice.
That must be what made the Alpha confident that she’d kill the Lycans at Green Valleys. "And what was her fate?"
Stefan sighed, resting on his seat. "Sorren shot her in the middle of her head. We got distracted and then a very strong wind blew, blinding us and taking her body away."
Such things must be unnatural so was it a witch’s doing? Could they be such thing as wind magic? Laurel thought.
"The thing is, we already killed all witches in the vicinity so she must be the only one who could have done that. But her body was below us at that point." Stefan added.
Laurel shook her head. Was he trying to make sense of magic used by witches? It never made sense so why bother. He should be glad he came out unscathed.
"We still don’t know the reason she attacked." Stefan finger tapped the table. "And she will still be out there, waiting for when to strike again."
Stefan turned to his younger brother by his side. Maybe, he should’ve listened when he told him to finish her off.
He remembered and turned to Laurel. "The injury at his side, it didn’t heal. It took a miracle to stop it from bleeding but it doesn’t close up."
Laurel looked down at Sorren, he did look pale, probably still going through pain as he slept. "What hit him?"
"Magic, but I can’t tell what type. His herbal mixture didn’t help him heal, but it’s working for Sigma." Stefan sighed. "Sigma is the reason he went off in the first place."
As she guessed. Laurel sighed. It was Sorren that moved out first. Always running out to confront danger, with a plan and most times, without.
She placed the letter on his table. "I’d ask Jessika to make a healing tonic soup that’s native to Green Valleys, if that’s okay with you."
Stefan took the letter. "Thank you. I’d look forward to it—" he paused when he saw the letter was from High Moon Kingdom.
Why did the King’s response go to Laurel instead of to Sorren who wrote to him? He tore the letter open and his eyes swept over its contents.
Laurel stooped by Sorren, checking the bruises on his arm. Obvious fire marks. His breathing was strangled.
She glanced at Stefan, but his eyes were on the letter he read so Laurel quickly checked Sorren’s forehead. She took back her hand immediately, leaving his side.
She stared at him horridly. His body felt like it was boiling in very hot water, the sweats dripping down his head confirmed. What could he have been hit with?
"You’re not going." Stefan closed the letter. Why did the King of lycans casually invite Laurel to visit him? She wasn’t directly under his kingdom.
He didn’t use Black Claws that was his own to send the letter. The letter had also felt informal, like the Princess became his friend overnight.
What was that King up to now?
"I know." Laurel faced him. "But I can’t just tell him that."
Stefan nodded in understanding. "I’d handle it."
Laurel lowered her head. "Thank you, Alpha."
But deep down, she expected that reply. She could be killed if she was left to go to High Moon, and he’d not want his mate to be killed by another.
It’d cause sudden disruption to him, and Green Valleys will go into a state of panic. And with Rolling Stones being given to her, these were reasons he needed her alive.
"Or maybe he doesn’t want you getting hurt." Elma added. "It mustn’t be all negative or self rewarding."
Laurel ignored her and glanced at Sorren. "He has a high body temperature. Is that normal for him?"
Stefan quickly reached for his brother’s hand. He dropped it quickly, his eyes widening. "No, it’s not. It’s not at all."
