Chapter Two Hundred-Thirty-One – He Swung Like That
The next thing on the list was finding Zeldris’s cousin who could use magic and was clowning as a lycan while being a werewolf. But the case was pending.
With the case of assassin witches at High Mountains, Laurel had entertained the bizarre thought that Zeldris’s cousin could be involved.
They might be quite off in thinking, by gene.
With the possibility that Rolling Stones will be handed to her, as Bebe had told her, Laurel wanted to make sure the lycans will win this one so she’d get her prize.
Zeldris’s relative shouldn’t be involved or it’d be risky.
"You are only cheering for them because Sorren threw a bone in it for you, aren’t you?" Elma came to the surface.
Laurel smirked, folding her legs in her seat. She was all alone in the hall and was awaiting lunch to be brought to her. She still had many notices to sort on her table.
"Elma, let’s say I’m being realistic here. Bebe told them about the assassination in details and I get the pack if things work out, without my warriors even fighting."
That’s like saying that Rolling Stones Pack was the reward of her telling them about the assassination.
Why should she have given out that information so easily the first time and get nothing? What if the attack never happened? Wouldn’t she look like a fool?
Now that something happened and they’re pressured, her information proved very useful that it got rewarded. "Laurel, you’re a bit off with that thinking." Her wolf sighed. "I know you don’t like them, but if anything had happened to our mate, we’d be in pain. We’re not Stefan that can handle it and we’d never be like him. We’ve suffered enough pain so there’s no need to add to it, by our self."
Hence why she should avoid Stefan, Laurel thought but she accepted Elma’s words to end the topic. She could perceive her food tray coming.
"Princess, I guess another member of our pack had been kidnapped again." Zeldris pulled the wheeled cart that had her food as he walked in with a letter.
The Princess snapped her head to him. "Bebe? Jessika? Lisa? Lia? Matt—" Zeldris placed the letter on her face.
"It was a joke. I’m just saying another notice from a pack, with a different symbol, came by." He sighed, sitting on the ground by her side.
Laurel stared at the notice, the symbol would be unrecognizable to Zeldris but not to her. She even saw it recently. The High Moon Kingdom’s symbol.
A notice from that Kingdom to her was trouble. She was only affiliated to them through Black Claws yet the King was sending her letters?
"Have you eaten, Zeldris?"
She watched him nod. She dragged her eyes back to the notice. She wanted to fill her stomach first before opening the calamity but her curiosity was great.
Zeldris added. "Jessika made it. She’s a really good cook." So Laurel slapped the notice on the table and took up the tray, for if it’s Jessika’s cooking, then even the world could wait.
A satisfied sigh left her when she was done, her hands rubbed her stomach bulging a little from her dress. She took the notice and ogled at it.
What would it be?
The incident only happened this morning, but it’s likely that it could be what the King wrote to her about, after all, he’d been fascinated with witches of recent.
Laurel rolled her eyes on seeing the long note the King bothered to handwrite. She stretched it to Zeldris. "Tell me what he wants. It’s the King of Lycans."
Zeldris took the letter and scanned through it. His expression was intrigue for a while before ending at humored. "His letter made no sense."
Could it ever? Laurel shook her head, taking it back from him. "Make it make sense then. What’s the summary?"
"Well, it started from ’I hope you weren’t hurt in the recent attack’ to ’if you’d been kidnapped, you’d have found information on these witches’ to ’you’ve an alliance with Damancas so use it and find the witches’ to ’I’m inviting you to High Moon Kingdom in three days to talk about the witches’." Zeldris panted slightly after saying everything in one breath. "It didn’t make sense at all."
Laurel stayed quiet. While the letter didn’t make sense at all, the King was smart enough to end it with an invitation that she could either refuse or accept.
Refusal would be rude and could affect how ’loyal’ she was to him, as she was under one of his packs. Refusal might also mean she wanted to withhold information.
But acceptance was worse because she had to go with results and she couldn’t just send someone to Damancas to investigate.
Also, there’s no need to investigate the witches. Investigate them on what? Only a set of witches had attacked High Mountains, not all.
"Why did Prince Sorren make it sound like I knew about the witches? It was your guess." Laurel sighed.
She’d have to lean on Stefan for this one. He wouldn’t expect her to be able to investigate witches at Damancas, and the witches they need was at Rolling Stones.
He’d have to explain that to his Alpha King.
"In worst case scenario, do you have anything to gain from visiting this King?" Zeldris’s words broke her train of thoughts.
She began thinking of that. On the surface, she had nothing to lose if she goes to the King empty handed or with news on capturing the witches that wrecked havoc.
But that wouldn’t be what the King wanted.
He could ask for the witches to be brought, possibly for experimentation, and Laurel knew she’d disapprove of that and it’d be another argument that she would not win.
"Worst case scenario, I’d go with Escanor, you and Lisa for her information gathering skills and we see the King. But there’s really nothing for me to give him."
If there’s nothing to give her, that twisted King could ask for her own head, as compensation.
He swung like that.
