Chapter 23: Her Brother
Chapter Twenty-Three - Her brother
It was strange. Laurel stretched her body and noticed the pain had subsided. She turned towards her prison door. It was really strange.
"Where is Sigma and Dylan today? Why weren’t they coming?" she moaned.
It was strange that she was missing those two goof heads when she was finally having a peaceful, no drilling, and three-meals-a-day day.
Having three meals a day, probably because she was identified as Stefan’s mate by Sorren, felt like some upgrade.
But she was still in prison so she didn’t cheer too much. It was just her first day since the incident so things could get even worsen.
Like the universe wanted to prove her right, the door to her prison opened and Jade walked in.
She was the last person Laurel wanted to see after last night. Another major reason Stefan would want to kill would be because he loved Jade.
Laurel got anxious as Jade slowly marched to her. Her body quavered when her hand pulled her face to hers.
Could it be, by any chance, she overhead the conversation last night? Did she now know who she was to her fiancé? Jade wouldn’t spare her, it was over.
"I just came to tell you that I’m no longer the one suffering, little shit. I’d be getting married soon after the Lycan Packs Meeting." Jade bragged.
Laurel couldn’t see how that was her problem. If anything, Jade was the one at a disadvantage as her husband’s mate would be alive while she claimed happily married. It would be weird.
"That has never been my business, has it?" Laurel tilted her head. "Happy Wedding, if that’s what you want me to tell you."
The wolfess scoffed, rubbing her temples. Why did she subconsciously feel the need to rub it on the bitch’s face that Stefan belonged to her?
Was it because her fiancé began acting strange after taking the princess hostage? There was surely no way he grew an attachment to his prisoner and it’s even more unlikely when she was his enemy’s daughter.
"I’ve told you what I came to tell you. Also, I can’t help but notice that your guard hasn’t come. Who’s in currently in charge of you?" Jade asked, authoritatively.
"Shouldn’t the Luna know?" Laurel smirked.
Jade clenched her fists. "I’m not yet the Luna and I’d know if I want to. Answer me. Who’s the person that is obviously slacking in their duties?!"
Sigma hasn’t shown up since Stefan threw him out.
Dylan could replace Sigma if he’s neglecting his duties because he’s mad at his Alpha but since Dylan isn’t, then it’s because he’s babysitting Sigma.
Mentioning either of their names could put them in trouble. Laurel replied. "Sorren is the one in charge of me. The torment, feeding and everything."
Sorren? Why was he the one in charge? Jade shook her head. "No way. Sorren hates dirty places and he wouldn’t care about the prisoner who rendered him fatherless."
He did look like some clean freak kinda guy. Laurel sighed. "Take it up with him then. I’ve answered you."
Jade turned her back to her. Why was Sorren the one in in charge of her? She’d been careful not to speak harshly to him since recently. They’d be family soon.
"I’d bring someone to monitor you since he isn’t here yet. Get ready for a good deal of torment." she headed to the door.
Laurel heaved a sigh, resting on the wall. "Do you feel okay getting married to a Lycan while you’re a wolfess?"
She was buying time for either Sorren or Sigma to come with her brunch to prevent Jade from assigning someone to her.
"You know, Lycans and werewolves were and may still be sworn enemies." She added. Her plans worked as Jade faced her, with folded arms. "Lycans and werewolves are no longer at war with each other."
Their heads were easy to use, Laurel noticed. She left the wall and met Jade’s gaze. "The war stopped recently. So there is definitely hostility left. At the Lycan Packs Meeting you’d be attending, what if you’re met with hostility?"
"I’d be with my fiancé. Nothing would hurt me. At Stefan’s father’s pack, he accepted both Lycans and werewolves. And why are you so worried about me?" Jade rolled her eyes.
Worried? She’s only trying to pass time. Laurel asked again. "You said you lost your brothers. What role did they serve in the pack? How were you picked by your Alpha to be his wife?"
The questions were becoming deep and a bit suspicious. Why did she care? Jade bent low with a grin. "I wasn’t picked. We both fell in love with each other as we’ve been friends since we were kids."
The relationship was that deep? Laurel shrugged. "Oh, you guys must have good chemistry then."
Jade felt oddly glad to hear that from her, she began chattering. "Obviously. Whether or not he finds his mate, it will never equal how long we’ve known each other."
Mates? That would be a risky topic to get into. Laurel didn’t even want to take the chance and ask about Jade’s mate. She changed the topic immediately. "And your brothers?"
"My older brother was Stefan’s best friend who gave his life for Stefan, claiming to be the heir of the Alpha." Jade answered.
Laurel remembered Stefan speaking of his best friend’s sacrifice. That best friend was Jade’s brother? Then Jade must also be important to him. "You had more than one, didn’t you?" Laurel kept on asking.
"Yeah, a younger brother. He was killed too. My older brother was a Lycan werewolf hybrid so could easily assume the role of heir of the Lycan Alpha’s son."
"Lycan hybrid?" So werewolves and Lycans interbred?
"His father had remarried my mother after his first mate’s death." Jade sighed. "Why do you want to know all these?"
Laurel exhaled, already running out of questions. "When my father raided your pack, I was probably locked up in my room under one of his punishments. I just want to know what went down as I’m now paying for it anyway."
Jade scoffed. "You are his daughter. It’s your cross to pay for it. And you’d always pay for it."
As she spoke, Laurel zoned out but kept her eyes on her.
If Jade and Stefan had known each other for so long, and Jade’s brother sacrificed himself for Stefan, and he was to be a Beta.... The connection between them was really strong.
Laurel could understand why the mate bond had no hold on him. He was bonded by love, duty and vengeance. He’d never hurt Jade as she’s the only survival of his best friend. In other words, Stefan could really come to terms to killing his mate instead of hurting Jade.
"I need to get out of here." Laurel panicked internally. "What they share might be stronger than a mate bond."
