Chapter 22: He Knows

Chapter Twenty-Two - She lives

Laurel quickly interrupted him. "I’ve told you, you better kill me or I’d bring hell to your life. You’d lose everything you care about."

The hair on Stefan’s skin stood. The pathetic bitch who was at his mercy dared to threaten him?

In a flash, his fingers wrapped around her neck. He should really kill her, because even he knew, she meant every word.

A smirk came to Laurel’s face as she slowly ran out of oxygen. "Y-Yeah... kill me. Then have the... curse... of killing your mate."

Stefan’s eyes slowly shifted to red and he added pressure to her neck, ignoring his wolf’s urge. He can live with the hatred and regret. It surely won’t be more than what he felt when his family was killed before him and he was too weak and coward to do anything.

"Your mate?"

Stefan’s body ran cold as he heard someone speak behind him. His hand on Laurel loosened.

She fell to the ground, coughing and choking on saliva mixed with blood. He didn’t do it? Why? Why didn’t he kill her?

A surge of hatred and pain vibrated through her body and she shot her head up. Her eyes cleared up. Stefan was standing before... Sorren?

Sorren quietly closed the prison door and kept his hands behind him. "Brother, Princess Laurel is actually your mate?"

Princess Laurel? Why was he addressing her that politely? And he lost his speech pattern again. Laurel gagged on blood.

"She’s not... a princess anymore." Stefan looked away, biting his lower lips. So it had come to this? He could never lie to his younger brother. Not even when the truth is already exposed.

Why didn’t he deny it? Laurel crawled away from him and rested her head on her bed, wiping her lips.

Sorren’s eyes were on her and she looked at him. It was the first time she saw emotion in his eyes and on his face.

Sadness, pity, regret.

Normally, she’d have hated her enemy looking at her that way but at the point, she was glad someone felt that way towards her.

"Sorren, I’d kill her." Stefan declared.

It made Laurel hiccup and she shut her eyes.

"No you wouldn’t." Sorren replied, making Laurel open her eyes again. She turned to him. Stefan didn’t make any movement when he said that, not disagreeing nor agreeing.

"Will you really stand killing your mate? You even hate people suffering. You gave your enemy, her father, a quick death." Sorren said.

Laurel remembered her father’s death. Cade had complained it was too easy. Her father had been beheaded, probably in one clean movement that he felt no pain.

Was Stefan really that type of person? Surely his brother should know him more. Then, why was he like that to her?

Was it really because of the incident fifteen years ago? Was his hatred so raw and his anger that hot?

"Do you also think you’d stand her suffering?" Sorren walked to his brother. "Watch her suffer, cause her suffering, and then... you’d suffer as well, for as long as you live?"

Stefan bent down, strangely feeling helpless.

"Though, you might not have thought that far." Sorren exhaled. "Well, I have. I can’t watch you suffer either. If she’s your mate, then, she... lives."

It felt like a flower just blossomed as Sorren said those words. Laurel held unto her beating heart.

She will live. A part of her felt like she could hold unto Sorren’s words. Living or dying was more than her own decision. She understood it now.

Any of them; Sigma, Sorren, Cade, Stefan, even Jade, could walk into the prison and snuff life out of her and she’d be too powerless to do anything. She got it now, and it hurt so much.

"Don’t tell anyone know this." Stefan finally spoke after few minutes. Laurel was almost sleeping off due to how tired she felt.

Sorren still stood besides his brother. "Naturally. Your little mate won’t last the night if I do." he chuckled lightly.

He was beautiful when he smiled. Laurel found a small smile on her lips and frowned it off. What’s wrong with her? He was still on her enemy’s side.

Stefan stood up and sighed. He turned to her and grinned. "Eh?" Laurel made a face. Why’s he grinning at her? Did he go mad?

"I’d still make you suffer, Laurel." Stefan said, wearing his grin. "But I won’t suffer because of it."

Sorren sighed, face palming. "You really don’t listen to me, do you? I should stop talking."

His brother pulled him by the arm as they left the prison, despite his protests. Laurel felt her body finally relaxing, no more tensed up.

She dozed off, her head on the bed but her body still laying on the cold door, that she was used to.

Outside, by the prison main gate, Sorren pulled his arm from his brother’s hold, and stopped walking with him.

Stefan feared he wanted to speak of Laurel again.

"Why did you bully my Sigma?" Sorren frowned. "I hope it isn’t payback for him accidentally hurting Jade last month."

He forgot. So the boy had hurriedly reported to Sorren? Stefan exhaled in relief. "I’m sorry. I’d apologize to him, I wasn’t thinking straight."

"No, he doesn’t want to see you. He’s offended that you beat him in sheer strength, you know he takes pride in being the strongest in natural sheer strength amongst us." Sorren exhaled.

Was he though? And was that the only thing Sigma was offended about? He really thought like an innocent child.

Stefan gazed at his brother. "You’re not even talking about what just happened?" He had to say it since he wasn’t speaking of it.

"Why should I? Is it my problem?" Sorren raised a brow. It felt like a stab to Stefan.

After his touching words that he didn’t want to see his elder brother suffer, at the end, he didn’t care? "But of course, that’s you." he sighed.

Sorren ran his hands though his hair, dramatically. "I’d go and manage Sigma. Laurel, your wedding to Jade, this whole pack... are your problem. You’re the oldest."

How could he...! Stefan rubbed his face. "Truly."

Why should he surprise Sorren was being his usual selfish self? If he was concerned about something, then that would be the real surprise.

His brother walked off, living him by the prison hall’s main gate. Stefan looked back at Laurel’s prison.

"Why do I feel relieved that Sorren came?" he asked himself. "Wouldn’t I have really killed her?"
