Chapter 218: Blatant Lie

Chapter Two Hundred-Eighteen – Blatant Lie

Did he think she was that dense? Laurel looked away from the two, as Baxter replied. "The enemy of your enemy is a friend."

Stefan nodded, looking back at his mate. "I’m glad you made friends. I’m not glad that the Rolling Stones Alpha made us an enemy but if she’s your friend, it’s still fine."

Laurel sprang up from her seat. Why was he suddenly treating her like a child? "I’m not friends with that Alpha."

"But did you meet up with her?"

Laurel hesitated. She couldn’t say no because The Lead Warrior saw her walking in from outside.

"Yes, because she sent a notice that she kidnapped a member of my pack. The little girl Prince Sorren brought back from High Moon."

Stefan frowned. That girl?

Sorren had told him about the girl later. How she was a victim of King Asher’s experiments and barely remembered her past.

He also explained that Laurel’s meeting with King Asher was to free the girl from his grasp. Stefan was still shocked on how she had pulled that off.

"I see. So she used the girl to lure you out in order to frame you for this." He tossed the letter to the ground.

Laurel glared at it. Its contents were blackmail, she knew. The Rolling Stones Alpha was trying to threaten her with the actual truth they shared, that she knew that Stefan would face a threat.

The Rolling Stones’ Alpha had sent a letter, saying she dissolved the alliance with Black Claws, by the Princess of Green Valleys’ suggestion, and she had no intentions of revoking her words.

Such acts would be seen as treason, except that Laurel didn’t have any reason to tell her to do so, as Black Claws was also her pack, so it’s only a childish and blatant lie.

Also, no sane leader revoked a useful alliance based on a non allied leader’s suggestion. It would be foolish.

"Do you want to take action against that crime?" Stefan studied his mate again. If she had the slightest sign of annoyance, then he’d send someone to handle it. If not, he’d have no choice but to let it pass.

There was a satisfied expression on Laurel’s face. "My Delta handled the miscreants. Thanks for the concern."

Stefan didn’t know if the gratitude was honest but he accepted, feeling slightly disappointed. "That’s all. I’d not keep you further. You can leave."

Laurel paused, noticing another notice on his table. With a High Moon Kingdom symbol. She remembered the drugs that Darren had spoken about.

Stefan followed her line of sight. Was she curious about it? He picked it up, wanting to give it to her, but she walked away. It was just a monthly report to the King.

"I’d take my leave then." She brushed past Baxter. She muttered an apology to him as she hurried off.

Why did she think of telling Stefan about the drug? He’d be loyal to his King. She’d only put Darren in trouble.

Baxter clearly saw the disappointment on the Alpha’s face when the Princess suddenly left. Yet he couldn’t point at anything. The Alpha might be fond of her.

Except, that wasn’t a natural emotion to have towards the daughter of the one who destroyed your pack.

Baxter shrugged. He didn’t also hate the Princess, those were in the past. That may be how the Alpha felt too.

"Alpha, I’d take my leave as well—"

"Arrange with Sigma, we’d be paying Sorren a visit. I’d like him to check Chris and confirm if the boy’s ready to go to Damancas for the alliance."

Baxter’s lips went downwards. "Alpha, is there a reason you need to take Sigma? I think he’s quite busy here—"

"You still don’t like Sorren?"

Baxter paused but released himself when he saw the Alpha looked humored, and not annoyed. He decided to be honest then. "I’m just not fond of him."

"Hmm... well, I won’t blame you. Sorren couldn’t make friends his age as a teenager. I doubt he plan to do so now." The Alpha left his table.

Baxter followed him as he left his study. "He’s so proud."

"He’s the Prince."

The Prince? Baxter glanced at the Alpha and saw him smiling. The Lead Warrior couldn’t place what that meant.

"But do tell Sigma. I think he’d be happy to come along. If he’s too busy to, then it’s fine too." Stefan added, as he stood in front of his room.

The Lead Warrior bowed as he walked off.

Stefan made sure he was gone, before dropping his smile and trudging into his room. It felt lonely these days.

He remembered Baxter’s words of his younger brother being proud and his smile returned to his face.

Baxter must’ve been frustrated because of Sorren’s unusual independency. Even Stefan, as his brother, couldn’t understand why.

He assumed it was realization that he was now an orphan and not the spoiled Prince, but even as a teenager, Stefan didn’t see Sorren lean or reach out to anyone.

He didn’t seen troubled so the older brother left it.

For Baxter, Stefan noticed there was a time as teens that he copied most of Sorren’s habits. Including his obsession for flowers, his androgynous style, and the long hair.

It might have been his way to say he admired the Prince, and maybe wanted to be friends, but Sorren being Sorren paid a blind eye to it.

Stefan guessed that’s why Baxter thought he was proud and disliked him to good degrees. Sorren might still treat him distantly even if he was very fond of Baxter’s cousin.

"That one is so hard to understand sometimes." Stefan muttered as he fell on his bed.

Still he was his little brother, and only surviving family. Whether Sorren showed it or not, Stefan knew he valued him as his only family.

Or maybe, it was as an older brother he could make do stuff for him. All was fine by Stefan. "He’d change when he meets his mate."

Stefan nodded at his words as he slowly drifted to sleep. "After all, every man changes... when they meet their other... half."

(Author notes: Thank you for reading to the end of this beautiful book. Stefan and Laurel were wonderful and prosperous leaders.... psyche! Hehe, don’t mind Author-sama. The absence of power stones and gifts does things to her head.)
