Chapter 217: The Letter
Chapter Two Hundred-Seventeen – The Letter
On arriving at Green Valleys, Laurel noticed the Lead Warrior at the border. It was odd that he was there at the entrance with his warriors today.
She noticed his eyes slightly expanded on seeing her. Had he been waiting for her? She hastened up.
"Um... Princess Laurel, could you please follow me for a brief meeting with the Alpha? He needs you there."
Laurel’s hands dropped to her side. What did he want? Why did he want to see her just seconds after she wanted to completely avoid him?
Escanor wanted to react but Laurel raised a hand to stop him. "This is Lead Warrior Baxter, the Alpha’s official. You should avoid him." She told the Delta, who nodded.
Baxter’s jaw dropped at her words. Right in front of him, she ordered someone to avoid him? His eyes tarried on the new face. Where did she get these people?
His scent seemed familiar but it’s probably when they crossed path sometime.
The young man didn’t seem devious and even if he was told to avoid him, he didn’t notice any hatred in his eyes.
He was around the same age with the Princess so Baxter wondered if the Princess went ahead to create the Elite Forces without the Alpha’s approval.
He didn’t think she’d be so defiant.
He turned, but noticed she was gone. He cursed at himself and ran towards the Alpha’s palace.
Meanwhile, Laurel found the notice on her table. It was the updated report of all her officials, including Escanor Zix as Delta and Zeldris Titus as her bodyguard and knight.
Zeldris had forgotten his surname and asked to have hers. She didn’t mind. She felt like his mother sometimes.
Since she was having a surprise trip to his palace, after so long, she decided to bring it along, in case the Alpha had some opinions, she’d slam it.
Outside, she didn’t see the Lead Warrior so called for Zeldris. Surprisingly, he was asleep. She had never seen him do that during waking hours due to how active he was.
She walked herself to the palace. "My knight is falling asleep while I’m here, forcing myself to not go to bed."
She shook her head as she neared the palace. The guards, unaware of her internal monologue, moved away for her to pass, misinterpreting her action as a threat.
Laurel walked through without sparing them a glance.
Walking through the hall, she sighted the Beta walking down. She looked away, not wanting any conversation. Yet he stopped in front of her with folded arms.
"What are you doing here?"
Laurel shrugged. "Why do you think I’d be here?"
Did he think she’d voluntarily stroll the halls that he frequented? He gave no response so she sighed. "Your Alpha called for me. The escort ran off."
The Beta spaced off, then walked away. "Go ahead."
Laurel turned to watch him leave. Did he forget that he was in her debt yet he moved around high and mighty?
Still, she noticed the disdain in his tone was gone. She smirked, going ahead. She found the Lead Warrior and he bowed, apologizing. "I’m sorry. I assumed you went—"
Laurel went past him to where he came out from, the Alpha must be there. "It’s fine. Let’s get it over with."
Baxter hurriedly followed.
Finally, he’d get to see an interaction between the Princess and the Alpha.
When he came in, the Princess was seated at a seat opposite the Alpha, glaring at him as he kept his head down, reading the book on his table.
"Baxter, the letter, please."
Baxter nodded at the Alpha and handed a letter from a shelf. Stefan took it and shifted it to Laurel. "It came an hour ago, from the Alpha of Rolling Stones."
Laurel grabbed the letter quickly, but then she froze. What could it be? What did that Alpha send?
There’s no way she exposed herself. Did she threaten him? But why will he show her his threat message if it didn’t involve her somehow?
She noticed Stefan studying her. Her heart quickened. Could that Alpha had twisted the truth to taint her?
She exhaled, keeping the letter of her laps. "It’s the content what you summoned me here for? Here."
She dropped the notice of the updated report of the officials, while fiddling with the letter in her hand.
Baxter had been noticing the two leaders.
The Alpha had only studied the Princess’ reaction, probably because the letter’s content was sensitive.
The Princess barely had any expression, apart from the slight nervousness she seemed to be in.
Baxter couldn’t tell the details of the letter but he knew the Princess wouldn’t do anything particularly dangerous.
"Zix?" Stefan raised a brow.
That was a well-known household in Damancas. He had met some of them by chance, and also because they didn’t seem so cautious to lycans.
He also guessed it was the new friend who little Marino said has his hair color, because Stefan couldn’t think of anyone else. He consciously ignored Zeldris’s new role.
"Yes." Was all Laurel said as a reply.
She looked at the letter in her hand and mustered the courage to open it. She could never let herself be accused of treason. Her Pack’s future rested on her shoulders.
Her hands slowly worked on opening it, with the greatest concentration as she was nervous.
"Did you bring the Damancas General to train them?"
Stefan’s question broke her concentration and her heartbeat began quickening again. Why did she fear? She’d squat down any accusation.
"No." she remembered to answer as she opened it.
Her eyes scanned through the letter, before she frowned, dropping it on her laps. "Is this why you called me here?"
Seeing how offended she was, Stefan smirked. "Yes, that’s what I called you for. What’d you say?"
Laurel’s hands squeezed on the letter. It amused him, didn’t it? She had been nervous for nothing. She returned the crumpled piece to the table.
"What do you think? Do you believe her?"
Stefan turned to Baxter, who immediately looked down, trying to act like he hadn’t been studying them.
"I can’t remember the word but I learnt it during warrior training years back. The enemy of my enemy is called..."
Laurel scoffed silently. Did he think she was that dense?
