Chapter Two Hundred-Twelve – Don’t Let It
Laurel topped the stack of stones and nodded at its size. If Marino returned, then he’d need a bag to take them all.
She became alert when she noticed Stefan’s scent coming towards her. She looked up and noticed he was carrying Marino towards her.
The boy wasn’t asleep or crying so she wondered why. Her scent was still hidden so she hoped Stefan wouldn’t ask why. Marino smiled as they got close.
Laurel smiled back but it vanished when she realized Stefan watched her. "I guess you’re tired of him now, Alpha. Let’s go back in, Marino."
The little boy looked sad. "Tired of me..."
Stefan pulled the boy from Laurel’s hold, frowning at her. "Could you be more considerate of his feelings? I only think he should sleep early."
Laurel realized and rubbed Marino’s cheeks, as he was on Stefan’s body, "I’m sorry."
Seeing her tender side up close, Stefan smiled, but Laurel quickly carried Marino from him. They were not one happy family so it shouldn’t look that way.
She made a quick bow. "It’s late and we should go in. If I knew you were here, I’d have gone back to not disturb your—"
"Laurel," Stefan called so she’d stop talking, "you know I wouldn’t mind. And the forest doesn’t belong to anyone."
Laurel raised her brow, not understanding him. She knew he wouldn’t mind. Since when did she know even the slightest thing that went on in his head?
"And you can drop the Alpha when we’re alone—"
"I don’t remember us being friends." Laurel interrupted. "You call me by my first name because I serve you. Why should I call you by your first name?"
She wanted him to say it. That it was because they were mates. Or because he wanted her to. Just saying something funny that’d make him sleep better.
Because all will be stupid reasons.
He only wanted her to call his first name to force the reality that he was always in her life, to torment her. That had been his promise to her.
She made one of her own, to frustrate him and make him regret it. So they should both keep their words. Since he said nothing, she turned away.
"Did you get any death threats recently?" he asked before she walked off. "You can always ask Cade to handle it."
Laurel suppressed her urge to scoff. "I received one a long time ago. In prison. I’m still waiting on that death."
Marino turned to the Princess on hearing death.
Before, he could barely keep up with the conversation and drifted to sleep on the Princess’ body.
But ’death’ alerted him. He knew what it meant and he didn’t like it. It meant something bad, really bad.
Matt had told him that all the people he liked but couldn’t see anymore, death had happened to them.
Mommy. Daddy. Lena. Marcus.
He didn’t want it to happen to Princess too. He stretched his hand towards Stefan. "Don’t let it happen. Don’t let death happen to Princess."
Stefan looked at his almost teary face and felt heavy.
He couldn’t remember anymore, but that threat was probably made by him. The things he did out of anger, and didn’t remember them when he was in a better mood.
He held Marino’s hands and rubbed it. "Go in first, Laurel. You need rest too." He let go of the boy.
Laurel exhaled, before quickly turning to walk away. She noticed Stefan kick down the stack of stones and she frowned. It wouldn’t change how she felt.
The guards at the border stared at her worriedly as she walked in hurriedly with a frown. Also, the little boy that left expectantly, had a sad expression.
"Good night, good men." Laurel sighed as she walked in. If only she had listened to them and spared herself an hour of all that.
But at least, Marino had fun. She’d forget herself.
"Princess!"
Laurel froze on seeing Zeldris, he looked like he was about leaving the quarters, he already changed from his night wears.
Would he have come to look for her? It’d have raised a lot of uncomfortable questions if he had seen her with Stefan.
Zeldris was persistent so it’d have been a war till she told him. Laurel rubbed her neck. "Marino wanted to see a tree. It was chilly so we went for a walk—"
"Alone?" Zeldris held her shoulders.
She frowned and he slowly let go of her.
She adjusted her sleeve. "Yes, alone. Don’t control my movements, Zeldris. I can handle myself, you know."
"You don’t need me then."
"What’s that?" she asked, even if she heard his whispers.
He returned to his room. "Good night, Princess."
Laurel looked at Marino, who stared back at her. She shook her head and held him more closely to herself.
While she was a maid, and at High Moon Kingdom, no one cared about where she was, or the near death experiences she might face.
Now, those experiences didn’t come as much but she had to be protected all the time? There was no balance for her.
’Princesshood’ didn’t come with everything, nor with the thing she wanted most – Freedom. She was still trapped within Green Valleys.
"Laurel, Laurel, stop being selfish." She reprimanded herself. At least, the pack was safe, and she had cute beings like Marino and Mira to pull her heartstrings.
It was enough if she’s alive. After all, at many points in her life, she had wanted to die and had met death.
She reached her room and laid the drowsy Marino on her bed. Mira was still fast asleep, curled a bit because of the chilly air. Laurel adjusted the curtains.
She gazed at the twins on the bed and smiled.
"Yeah, this is so much better than back then." So she’d accept it without complaining. Maybe, she should also let Zeldris do his job.
No matter how insignificant she might feel, she knew that if something happened to her, it’d affect Green Valleys.
She was the only surviving royal blood, after all.
