Chapter Two Hundred-Eleven – Under The Tree II
Stefan stared at the little man wide-eyed.
He was more emotionally intelligent than he’d expect a toddler to be or wasn’t he a toddler?
Stefan looked at him keenly. He never appropriated the right ages to people but at that point, he sort of saw little Marino as an old wise man.
"You noticed she was tired. That’s awfully smart of you, young man." His shoulders slumped. "I don’t even know when I’m tired. Only Sorren realizes."
Marino didn’t understand all the man had said but he left the ground and patted Sorren’s head. He noticed his shoulders slump so added. "Don’t cry."
Stefan felt it strange that he actually felt comforted by the little boy. Would the boy still be nice to him if he knew who he was? The thought of the little boy looking at him in hatred or fear worried him.
The things he did, he’d not regret them, because that revenge healed him of the guilt of his helplessness back then.
Watching everyone die but being a useless Crown Prince that could do nothing. Having his best friend get killed for his sake, while hoping he’d avenge him.
How could he not avenge them?
But just maybe, along the way, they were some things he should’ve forgiven, but didn’t. And that, he regretted.
Marino sat down back on the ground, and whispered to the birds. "He has the same eye color as me."
Stefan smiled, nodding to himself. Feeling better, he took the chance to look at his mate. She was seated under a tree, looking at something on the ground.
He wondered if he should try speaking with her.
Maybe using Marino as a third person?
"Marino, can you leave your meeting for a while?" he looked at the birds. "Don’t me annoyed, please."
Marino turned to the Princess, then to him. "You want to speak with Princess? Under the tree?"
Stefan’s lips parted. He could the boy tell? He was indeed a wise man in his past life. He nodded obediently.
Marino left the ground, keeping his hands behind him. He made a small bow to the birds, amusing Stefan. "Should I tell Princess to come?"
She probably wouldn’t. Stefan brushed off a leaf that fell on his hair. "Why not ask her if—"
Marino picked the leaf he brushed off and sprinted towards Laurel. Stefan wondered what that’d do.
Laurel sighed for the nth time.
This wasn’t how she planned it. She planned to finally get close with Marino, but he strayed far and Stefan had kept him all to himself.
She didn’t want to go to them, she still had the charm and she couldn’t take her clothes off suddenly to take it out. If she got close, then Stefan will realize something was off.
As Darren was slowly getting his trust, she didn’t want to do something that’d set his suspicious eyes on him. The only one who could give her a charm will surely be Darren.
Laurel hit her head on the tree, hoping Stefan would disappear. Then she heard little feet running to her.
She raised her head expectantly.
Marino stopped in front of her, panting slightly. "Tree drop... no, leaf drop on him." He showed her a small leaf cupped in both hands.
Laurel looked into his hands, he held it with great care but it was just a leaf. Did that suppose to mean something?
"What does the leaf mean?"
"He said he want to speak with you."
And he handed a leaf? Laurel looked for a rough-edged stone and placed it in his hands, taking the leaf out first.
"What should I say?" Marino tilted his head.
Laurel looked up, before shrugging. "He’d know. Or say hundred of these should’ve drop on him instead."
Marino smiled and ran back.
He gave the still confused Stefan the stone and relayed the message. Stefan found himself smiling. He should be rained with all these sharp edges stone?
She might not hate him much if that’s all she wanted to happen to him. He didn’t even think she’d send something back.
Still, he didn’t want the boy running back and forth. "Thank you." He told Marino, holding unto the stone.
Marino fell to the ground, besides the birds that still waited for him.
"Hmm! You can tell Princess why you’re tired. She’s always tired. You’re always tired. Why are you two tired?"
The boy looked genuinely confused.
Stefan didn’t know how to explain pack duties or emotional complexities to him. He felt the boy might actually understand it, with how wise he seemed to be.
"Marino, do the Princess have friends?" he thought of asking. If Laurel was eighteen, then she’d be prone to making friends a lot.
"Lisa." Marino mentioned. "Vakkie. Lizard... no, Zeldis. Hmm... many many friends. Me. Mimi. Matt." He looked up. "Lena. Marcus. Mommy...no. Princess don’t know."
Stefan had been trying to keep up with the names till he said Lizard, then corrected with a name similar to that annoying blind young man. Was he so close for the child to consider him a friend to the Princess?
And Lena, he always remembered that was who Laurel mentioned as her sister when they met in prison, and that’s the supposed mother of these children.
Guilt began rising in his heart but the boy smiled at him, washing it away.
"I don’t know all. Princess has a new friend and..." he stood up, struggling a bit, and went to Stefan’s ears. "He has the same hair color like me."
Stefan nodded in understanding. Marino fell back to the ground, with a louder thud than normal.
With how he struggled to stand, and how he fell back heavily, Stefan guessed he got tired. He should let him go.
He turned to Laurel, but noticed a stack of stones by her side. Did she plan to give all those to Marino, for him, if the boy returned again?
"Princess got bored."
Stefan turned to the boy who noticed Laurel’s stack. He shook his head. That wasn’t bored, but her resentment.
