Chapter 210: Under The Tree
Chapter Two Hundred-Ten – Under The Tree
She felt warm. She snuggled against the warmth by her sides. Her eyes fluttered open to see little Mira and Marino laid by her sides.
Laurel didn’t feel sleepy anymore but she laid there, basking in the warmth, it didn’t come all the time.
"W-Water..."
She snapped her head to little Marino and forced her body off the bed. He rarely spoke. He must be feeling very thirsty. "Hmm... come with me."
Carrying him on her shoulders, she sprinted to the kitchen. The boy was a little dizzy when she placed him on the table and handed him a cup of water.
"Ah, maybe, I shouldn’t run with him on my shoulders." She rubbed his head as he tried to put the cup in his mouth. When he was done, he fell on the table.
"So dramatic." She poked his stomach.
And then she heard it, a small laughter from him. Laurel stared at him with doe eyes. Finally! She made him laugh.
Not wanting to let the chance go, she poked his stomach again. Nothing. Her face dried up. He always played hard to get. Laurel sighed, holding her head.
Marino crawled on the table towards the window. Laurel followed him and noticed it was almost dark, she had slept for long.
A chill breeze came from the window, making Marino stick his tongue. Laurel chuckled, then joined him, just sitting there, saying nothing. A sigh left her again.
"Princess?"
Laurel snapped her head to him, her eyes turning doe again. He called her name... not exactly her name... but he called her! "Yes, dear?"
He pointed outside. "Tree. Let’s seat under the tree."
But there was no tree in sight. Laurel furrowed her eyebrows in determination. She knew where trees will be at so they’d have to go there.
Picking Marino up from the table, she stormed out of the building. She slowed down while passing by Zeldris’s room.
That young man would destroy her time with Marino if he came close. Outside the gate, she kept Marino on her shoulders while walking slowly.
She noticed his arms stretched out, as if embracing the breeze. Her heart squeezed at his cuteness. At least, the little stroll will make him sleep better.
The Black Claws Warriors had worried looks as they saw the Princess walk past the border. One of the ran to her, daring to change her mind.
"Your highness, why not... stroll around the pack. I’m sure if you want a short stroll, you can just..."
"Why will you control my movement?" Laurel stared at him quizzically, doing her best to hide her disdain.
But the stare was enough to kill his courage and he returned to his post. Laurel continued out.
Outside, she increased her pace to the place she slept in, while Zeldris trained. They were a lot of trees there.
Also, she patted her side, she had the charm that’d hide her scent so nothing will get drawn to her. If she noticed anything, she’d run first.
She must not engage, not with Marino in the line.
"Tree!" Marino yelled as he ran towards a flowering tree.
That was the loudest Laurel had heard him scream.
She remembered that majority of his and Mira’s life were inside that store, shielded by Matt. They probably hadn’t seen vast landscapes and tall trees.
It reminded Laurel of how trapped she’d been, except hers was due to hatred, while theirs were due to the love and helplessness of their older brother.
"Marino, do you want Mira to see the trees with you someday?" she asked, walking to where he hugged a tree.
He looked at her with sparkly eyes and Laurel wondered if she was melting. "Let’s go back and bring Mimi!"
Laurel turned pale. Bring her now?
She forced a smile. Mira was a beast when woken from sleep, only Matt could pull that off. "I’d certainly bring her next time. We should pick the best spots first, right?"
Marino looked around, then ran to another big tree and wrapped his small arms around it.
Laurel sat on the ground, watching him with a smile of her face. It was around his age that became the last time she got to play around.
She shook the sad thoughts off her mind.
Few minutes later, she noticed Marino still talking with the birds that surrounded him. She thought of joining the conversation but let him to, in case it was important.
She laughed at her thoughts, but her smile fell when she noticed it again. She’d been trying to ignore it since she came into the forest.
After all, he wouldn’t be able to catch her scent.
But it seemed he was strolling towards her. "Ah, yes! Marino’s scent!" she left the ground. Why did she think the little boy couldn’t be detected?
"Mari—!" She froze when she saw him already with the boy. She clicked her tongue. That must’ve been why the border guards were trying to stop her from leaving.
Their Alpha was here.
Stefan stared at the little boy who stared at him back. For a moment, he expected the girl to recognize him, but he soon realized it wasn’t the girl.
"Won’t you question why he’s alone here?" Kai reminded.
Stefan sat by the little boy and the birds. Was he really alone here? He had noticed Laurel but she’d probably prefer it if he didn’t bother her.
Also, for some reasons, he couldn’t catch her scent. He could never place why those happened. But it scared him.
"Are you here to see tree?" the little boy pointed at the tree behind them.
Stefan didn’t turn, he’d probably lock eyes with Laurel and she’d scowl at him. He wanted to spare himself anything that’d make him feel worse.
"Not really. I was just strolling." He rested on a nearest tree. "It’s strangely refreshing. And you?"
Marino tilted his head. "My name is Marino."
That’s not what he asked. Stefan smiled. "Well, Marino. Why are you out here?" he looked at the birds. "And what are we discussing?"
The little boy smiled.
"Princess is tired. She sigh and sigh." He pointed at himself. "So I say we seat under the tree but she’s... far." He looked behind Stefan.
