Chapter Two Hundred-Nine – Teaching
Darren stepped into the palace, with Jessika by his side.
He’d told the cook to return so she’d not be targeted but she insisted on using him to go into the kitchen to see her old friends. She was always reckless.
"Isn’t that the kitchen?" Darren glanced at an abandoned shed. Jessika followed his line of sight and scowled.
Then she began laughing. "Sir Darren, don’t tell me your kitchen looks abandoned like that?"
He sighed, looking at other places. For Jessika’s sake, no one should meet them together, or it’d raise questions on how he knew her. He had prepared an answer to that, but it’d be better if he didn’t use it.
"You must be good friends."
Darren froze, before mentally face palming.
Jessika turned behind her, her humored expression fading. "Beta Cade! N-Not really. I was just walking the guest to the Alpha."
Like he’d buy that excuse. Darren sighed. Looking at the Beta, he seemed more annoyed than he should be. Was Jessika a miscreant who caused trouble for him?
"She’d leave now. Don’t worry." Darren patted Jessika’s back and pointed at the closest exit. The young lady unconsciously bowed to her young master as she left.
That was over. Darren thought.
Meeting the Beta’s gaze again, and it had darkened more on him. Maybe Jessika wasn’t the problem.
He remembered Prince Kiad’s words of the Alpha having a change of countenance that made him scared. Could it be what was going on with the Beta?
"No, I’m thinking that way because I suspect the Alpha of fancying the Princess." Darren thought as he continued walking. "They wouldn’t all be like that."
These werewolfesses were their captives, after all.
Ahead, he noticed the Alpha standing by the window, looking at them. Had he been watching? Darren sighed. These particular lycans were peculiar.
"Cade, you don’t have to glare like that." Stefan smirked. He had already heard from Sorren that Cade liked the cook. "I’m sure our guest was worried."
Darren snapped his head to the Beta who didn’t show immediate refusal. Could it be true? Even his Alpha knew.
"Alpha, I don’t know what you’re talking about." Cade said dryly as he opened the door for the two to enter.
With that tone, Darren was sure he knew. Since the Alpha used it to tease him, then he didn’t see it as wrong.
A young boy was in the library that they walked into. The young white haired boy stood up on seeing the officials. "N-Nice to meet you, Alpha, Beta and... Sir."
Darren looked the boy up and down. He was at most thirteen. Could he successful get an alliance with Damancas?
"He might not look like much but he’s a smart nephew... grand..." Stefan tilted his head. "He’s an intelligent relative of my mother."
One of the gifts that were born after the destruction of Black Claws Kingdom. Stefan rubbed the boy’s head. "Also, he was the only one willing to go."
The boy slightly trembled under everyone’s gaze. It was actually that, he was the only one who was bullied to go, by Prince Sorren.
According to Prince Sorren, Stefan wouldn’t let him go as he’s a relative, and would leave it for Cara.
But the opposite happened, Stefan assumed Sorren gave a perfect intelligent young man to go get the alliance.
The boy was actually regretting the turn of events but was too scared to say anything.
"Relative of your mother?" Darren peered into the boy’s brown eyes. "He’s werewolf. I mean, it’s okay if it’s—"
"It’s a found family." Cade interrupted. "Obviously."
Darren nodded, with an ’hmm’ sound. The Beta didn’t like him, and probably since their first meeting.
"I’d do my best to teach him what I can. I recently got my alliance with Damancas too."
Stefan seemed surprised. "You didn’t always have one? I assumed you did and that’s why you could comfortable stay besides a Lycan pack."
Darren forced a smile. It didn’t mean Damancas wouldn’t have defended him if the lycans dared do anything.
"I recently visited for exportation and decided to try for it. The King had been in a good mood so I got it."
Stefan stared at Darren in admiration. As a young lycan, he’d always been told to fear that King, yet Darren was lucky to meet him in a good mood. Only a miracle.
Also for the traveler to stay besides a Lycan pack without a powerful backup for long, Stefan couldn’t help but feel that he was one werewolf who beloved lycans can be rational. The Alpha was touched.
"I hope it works out well for you, Chris."
The little boy closed his eyes as he nodded. "Yes!"
Few minutes later, the Alpha left them in the library.
The Beta said he’d stay so the boy wouldn’t feel scared with a new face, but Darren felt the boy was more tensed with the Beta, than a seemingly normal traveler like him.
Darren noticed the books in the library. Some of the recent ones that had been read were about lycan hunters. Either the Alpha or the Beta had been curious about it.
Thankfully, they weren’t good enough information in them.
"You will need to speak confidently when before the King and Queen." Darren said as he buttoned the boy’s shirt. "You’d have to look smart too."
The boy furrowed his brows, looking serious. "Yes!"
It wasn’t a case of ’yes!’ but actually doing it. Darren took out a book. "You’d also have to make the King and Queen know what your pack brings to the table early enough."
The boy looked ahead as he remembered. "We have good jewelry crafters at Black Claws. And we have really good tailors too."
Those could work. Darren patted the boy’s head.
"Damancas is a nation that care about looks, so those will be great export goods. Remember to say it first. Hmm?"
The boy grinned at finally getting something through.
"Then, about speaking politely. Well, you should address them as ’my King’ or ’your highness’. The latter is preferred." Darren added. "And you should—"
He noticed Beta Cade leaving the library.
"Um... Beta Cade, are you leaving already?"
Cade turned to him with sleepy eyes. "This place is boring. What you’re saying is boring. So why not?"
Darren smirked internally. The Beta wasn’t a reader, was he? Meaning, he probably wasn’t the one reading about lycan hunters. The Alpha could be.
"Okay, have a good day, Beta—"
Cade left before he could finish.
