Chapter 197: Sam
Chapter Hundred-Ninety-Seven – Sam
From what Asher gathered from the young boy, he was an orphan with only two brothers that got kidnapped recently, Asher guessed all the rest had similar stories.
To the young boy, joining the assassin team was all he could do as his brothers were all he had. It also made Asher know he had a low morality compass.
After all, he got impressed that Asher stole from nobles.
The team got closer to Lunaria’s border and Asher noticed the good spot Nene had spoken about, a place with good view but far away from the border.
She had told him in hopes he wouldn’t try entering but Asher very much planned to enter Lunaria.
But then the leader of the team, changed route, leaving him confused. They walked deeper into a forest’s path. Asher turned to Sam for explanation.
"Th-They must... have found him."
"Who?"
"One of those l-lycans that stay in Lu-Lunaria. We received information... that one will be in the forest."
Like when Fang got the information but got killed? Asher smirked, there was someone killing assassins in High Moon with the hand of these bred lycans.
In that case, Asher was sure Sam and the rest wouldn’t survive this. He could play as their King and let them know but he really wanted to see a lycan using their magic.
So, he’d only try to save Sam. As witness.
They reached a path that seemed to slope down, its slope was deep so Asher searched for a high tree that’d give them a better view.
"The young ones should stay behind. Sher, Sam, and you, Amber." the leader pointed at a lanky boy by his side. "Hold the bows. Shoot when I say. You two, stay."
Asher nodded. If he wasn’t going into Lunaria, then he better stay to watch. The rest slid down the slope.
Asher noticed Sam grit his teeth, attempting to go down the slope. "You should listen to them. You’d die."
Sam stopped. "B-But my brothers... I don’t even know if they’re still alive. I-I can’t just stay—"
He was picked up by Asher and flung to a high tree. Timely, he caught a branch and flung himself over it, sitting on the branch.
When he got his balance, he saw Asher on the tree already, looking down the slope. He crawled to him, being careful of falling. "Sher, that was so cool!"
He didn’t stammer when he was excited, Asher noticed. He made a ’hmm’ sound in response, looking down. He had a clear view of what happened down there.
The assassins snuck towards a figure in the shadows, possibly asleep on a boulder, shielded by trees.
Sam peeked down, but noticed Asher squatted on a tree branch, with absolute balance. He also noticed the shoes had an inscription of letter ’A’ on it.
The heels also showed it had been worn for a while. Didn’t Sher say he stole it from a merchant few days ago? Then it should be new.
Sam looked down the slope. He could tell Sher wasn’t a normal thief but he hoped to learn a lot from him so said nothing. The assassins circled the figure, ready to strike.
"And from where did you all come from?"
Asher leaned forward, waiting for the figure’s face reveal.
The assassins all pointed their sword at the figure’s direction. "You are from Lunaria, bring our brothers!"
The figure rolled down from where it laid, staying stone dead on the ground. "You really scared me now!"
The figure sighed, yawning. "And good sirs, I assure you, I’m not with your brothers. I am also not from Lunaria."
The figure slowly got up, then massaged their arms. "I am Zeno. An official of Bloody Moon Pack, under High Moon Kingdom." He yawned again. "Can you go now?"
Asher squinted his eyes at the figure. He saw him at the Lycans Meeting, and his name was registered under the new pack, Bloody Moon.
But, Nene had told him that the two lycans that killed the Fang members seemed to know of him. Also, Zeno was a popular Lunarian name, Asher discovered after research.
He couldn’t guess what made Zeno be part of Bloody Moon Pack, but if he freely had a nap besides Lunaria, then he either felt at home, or was really confident.
Still, something was obvious. This Zeno didn’t know of assassins coming as he still tried to shoo them away, perhaps because he knew they were from High Moon.
"I’m telling you, I didn’t take your brothers. Where’d I keep them?" Zeno fell back on the boulder. "I’m tired."
The assassins began having second thoughts. If he was persistent on knowing nothing and not trying to attack them, then couldn’t he be really innocent?
"Don’t forget that our informant is a highly trusted one who gave information to a Fang squad!" one of them said.
Asher snickered. They should ask what happened to that Fang squad. He didn’t care about them trying to attack, as long as he saw what he wanted.
The leader of the team nodded. He wouldn’t be swayed by a Lunaria bred lycan! "In that case, we’d keep you hostage till your country return our brothers!"
That didn’t seat well with Zeno. He was an official and couldn’t take a holiday, despite how much he’d like to.
Also, Lunaria didn’t kidnap lycans anymore.
"I won’t be coming. Would you rather die than leave?"
The assassins clutched their weapons tightly. They can’t get scared and falter, they must rescue their family!
"We don’t care! You’d be the one dying!"
Zeno left the boulder, staring down at them.
A darkness began swirling in his red eyes, something none of them could see, despite being close.
The next change happened within the surroundings. The natural sounds around the forest slowly died down, peaking Asher’s senses.
Suddenly, the birds of the air began descending sharply in a suicidal feat but they stopped an inch to the ground, unnaturally, making loud chirps.
The natural sounds resumed but only that they were louder and wilder. The shrubs began moving and growls escaped from the mouth of the creatures.
"You know," Zeno gently took off his gloves, "there’s still that option to run away. You should really take it."
