Chapter 184: No lie

Chapter Hundred-Eighty-Four – No lie

Laurel leaned further back and the ’blind’ young man stretched his hand apart. "I want... a hug."

She paused, before taking two more steps back and gesturing to Lisa. This young man might have lost some nuts during his years as a slave.

"Would you mind..."

Lisa’s cheeks flushed a bit, then she went in for a hug. However his hands closed and he coiled himself again.

Laurel frowned. This was no kid. He looked big that she could guess he was older than she was by years.

"Finish your tea." She reminded with a stern voice. She really wouldn’t be babysitting a grownup. Blind or not.

Her eyes shifted to Lisa, who had a little frown for being rejected. Laurel patted her shoulders and Lisa left afterwards. Laurel left to feed Mira and Marino before returning to the young man. "Now, we have ascertain that you can talk too, so you’re not dumb... and blind, right?"

"I am." He said quickly.

So he’d be responsive now? Laurel folded her arms. "Anyway, I’ve decided to let you join the warriors of Green Valleys. Will you or—"

"But I agreed." He suddenly sat in a submissive position.

Laurel raised a brow. "Agreed to what? Being Warrior?"

He bent his head down. "Joining the Princess’ elite force."

What the hell was that? Laurel exhaled.

Jessika once spoke of it but she swatted it because she didn’t want something so fancy. After all, the Beta and Delta helped the Alpha and she was in a similar position.

Except, her Beta was a child and her Delta was nonexistent. Laurel began considering the force, but what use would they be exactly?

"I don’t need someone following me about if that’s what you think. Also, you can’t see, it’d be a hassle on you." She smirked. "Or can you?"

There was no reply from him. Laurel reached for the crown in her wardrobe. She didn’t need to use it but she wanted to cut the excess talks.

Holding it in her hands, but hiding it from his line of sight, she asked again. "Are you blind?"

He shook his head. "But I can’t see."

She tilted her head, also looking at the crown which didn’t glow. That meant he was right, but how did he not see but wasn’t blind?

"It’s dangerous to say it now that we have Lycans here." He mumbled but Laurel heard him.

Something that’d put him in danger if the Lycans heard it? She could only think of one thing. "Is magic involved?"

He snapped his head to her, his jaw dropping. "How did you... you are so smart, Princess!"

Laurel frowned at the praise. It was obviously something unnatural, like magic. And since he came from Damancas, it was even more probable.

"So, is it a curse?"

He fell back. "No, I hurt myself years back and nearly lost my sight, so my mother, a witch, used a magical item on my eyes. However, they didn’t heal and I can’t see at all."

He can’t see at all but he wasn’t blind? Laurel nodded, even if it still didn’t make perfect sense to her.

In that case, wasn’t he blind?

She was trying to ignore the fact that he was probably a witch for having a mother who was a witch. "Follow me."

She left where she leaned on. That helmet should be the magical item since he didn’t want it gone. She knocked on the door of the Beta’s quarters and was ushered in.

"Let him come too." She told the servants, concerning the blind man. She saw him walk in calmly, not like a blind person. His sense of direction was complete.

Could he be seeing with magic?

"Beta Ferdinand—" Laurel paused, seeing the young Beta with a sword vibrating in his hand. She turned to another servant whose sword glowed at the metal.

Something was wrong. She backed away, shielding the young man with her from coming in.

"Princess, please let him come in. These swords react to his magical energy." The Beta said, putting his sword down. "If he’s a witch I disguise, we assure not to att—"

"I’m not a witch." The young man defended from behind Laurel. "Please... don’t call me a witch."

Laurel glanced at him, and then back at Ferdinand. "Those sword may be reacting to his helmet. It’s has magical energy. This guy was a servant to an elder."

Hearing the Princess call him ’servant’ not ’slave’ made the young man bend his head down, but there was no expression on his half covered face.

"A servant of an elder having a magic infused helmet? Not an everyday sight. Please come in."

Laurel frowned at Ferdinand’s monotonous voice. If he was impressed or in disbelief, she couldn’t tell.

She walked in, even if she was already in.

"My helmet has no magic." The young man stayed out.

Laurel turned to him. "But you said you had a magical item."

"Well, I never said the helmet." He quipped quickly.

Laurel had to chuckle right there. This young man didn’t act like someone who’d been a slave for a while.

Apart from his unusual want for physical touch and recoiling when shunned, he didn’t seem like one who’d been laden with trauma.

While she could be happy for him, it also painted him as suspicious. If he was a miserable slave, obeying his Master’s words to kill her, then she could overlook it now he’s no more shackled.

But he even spoke sassily?

He definitely had a mind of his own, not ’slave-ish’ at all. His intent to kill her should have personal influences.

And if it wasn’t the helmet, what other magic infusible item did he have on him?

"My point here is, I suspect you for lying about your state of health. If I am wrong, prove it." She raised her voice.

The young man noticed the servants run toward him, while holding unto their swords. Fear gripped his heart as he wondered what was going wrong. "I never lied."

Laurel internally agreed. The crown never glowed.

However, he hadn’t been clear either. Taking someone in circles was fun only when she did it.

He was strong enough to nearly kill her, so she shouldn’t take him for a joke. He had to come clean.
