Chapter Hundred-Sixty-Seven – Tears
Lady Cara hesitated before replying Stefan’s question. Her face had reddened when he spoke to her. "I just don’t want the Alpha having to break his schedule to host me."
Dylan sighed. Was the Alpha supposed to host her?
Stefan’s expression clearly asked the same thing. He hummed. "I see. You were sent here by Sorren, right?"
Cara hesitated again. "W-Well, I wanted to come here too. He just gave me permission."
Just? Stefan frowned. "If he didn’t give the permission, you’d never had come. He’s the one in charge of your welfare there, young lady. I hope you understand."
She looked down biting her lower lips. Why did she forget the Alpha was sensitive towards his brother and spoke that way about him? "I-I’m very sorry, I’m very sorry—"
"Dylan." Stefan ignored her. "You can take her to Cade’s quarters. She’d be his responsibility. I’m sure she need to get on with whatever Sorren sent her here to do."
Cara’s eyes watered at the tone he spoke with. She had really pissed him off on her first day. She looked up, revealing her wet face.
Dylan took a step back. And Stefan tried his best not to scowl. What was she playing at now? He really hated it when females cried for no reason.
He only tolerated it in children, but now this lady in front of him was shedding fountains when there’s no reason to.
"Should I ask you why you look that ridiculous or you’d explain yourself?" he let his scowl show.
Cara froze again. The Alpha hated tears?
"I’m sorry for speaking that way about Prince Sorren. Please forgive me, Alpha." She bowed low. "And," she sniffed, "I’d do my best to help the palace."
"Was your role, assigned by Prince Sorren, about helping the palace?" The Alpha asked.
"Related. He said I should arrange the maids and assign duties to them. Also," she wiped her face. "aren’t maids supposed to be from that pack? Their princess—"
Stefan’s eyes dimmed on her.
She knew nothing yet came all the way here? What did she hope to achieve then? He turned to Dylan who immediately understood.
The warrior faced the Lady. "Lady Cara, Green Valleys is a rightful pack under us. Not slaves or maids. If you want to employ them, then fine, but they don’t owe you service."
Cara’s hands balled as she heard that. So that Princess was an actual Princess! She’d not be able to get her revenge any time soon.
"And that reminds me, did you have problem with the Princess of Green Valleys? Was she the reason you were on the ground?" Dylan raised a brow.
Stefan, who continued his work, looked up on hearing Dylan. "What problem with the Princess?"
Cara’s face flushed in embarrassment. She cursed Dylan for bringing that up and her brain raced on how to divert the topic without further humiliating her.
"I-I... It was a misunderstanding, really. It doesn’t matter."
Stefan sighed softly. He had heard some guards speak about how scary the Green Valleys’ princess was.
He didn’t know why she gave herself such image but it’s probably to protect her pack.
"She has to protect her pack because you can’t do it." Kai chipped in. "Now that you two are buried deep in taking care of your packs, we’d be apart for longer."
Stefan sighed, in reaction to Kai’s worries but Cara assumed it was a reply to her statement and nodded. "Yes, Alpha. I’d do my best to be on good terms with the Princess so I’d packs can live in peace together."
She didn’t mean any of that. If she’d feign friendship with that princess, it’d be to beat her up later when no one’s looking and force her to recognize her.
"I don’t know how Jade had been running here, but as I’m here for her position, I’d also be doing the things she’s supposed to do." Cara mused within herself.
After that, she and Dylan excused themselves from the Alpha’s presence. Dylan walked ahead. "Alpha said I should take you to Beta Cade’s quarters."
The lady rolled her eyes. "You are that little pipsqueak that sticks with Prince Sorren and that airhead kid, right?"
Dylan frowned. Why did she insult he and Sigma? He tried to find the wrong in what he said but they were none.
And if he thought hard on it, indeed he had been with Prince Sorren long enough for someone to identify him. He replied proudly. "I am. I’m also a warrior now."
That airheaded kid was now a Delta, was she aware?
Lady Cara groaned. There were many boring people in the palace. She’d heard of that Baxter being made lead warrior. His fan girls at High Mountains were elated.
Cara didn’t want to be a common lead warrior’s wife, and since Prince Sorren was difficult, the only option was the Alpha. The pack might not still have a Delta.
Dylan took permission from the guards at the Beta’s quarters before walking in with Lady Cara. Cara noticed their eyes following and smirked internally.
She also planned to use the warriors to gain favor for herself. The warriors were close to the King and could speak good about her.
They were all she could use, apart from her brother who wouldn’t help her, and Prince Sorren who was away and probably disliked her, there was no one to help her.
They walked into the living room where Cade sat with a guest. Cara looked around and found the place as dull as she had expected.
She recognized the guest as the airheaded kid usually with Prince Sorren but he looked bigger.
Dylan bowed. "Beta Cade, Alpha had assigned Lady Cara to you and your quarters. Her role is arranging and assigning roles to the maids. She’s to—"
"Oh please. That’s not all I’d be doing." She snapped, staring at her brother." It’s like treating me like a maid too."
Cade met her gaze, his filled with disdain. "You should be a good girl here. Don’t cause unnecessary trouble for me."
Cara scoffed. "I’m here by my own accord and with my own plans. Just don’t interfere."
Sigma and Dylan watched the siblings in amusement. Sigma pointed at the file Cade gave him. "Miss... Cara, right? We were talking. Could you leave for a moment?"
Cara became livid. Who was that kid to speak to her like that?
As she had those thoughts, her hand swung over Sigma’s face. "Shut up, you brat!"
There was silence.
