Chapter Hundred-Sixty-Four – Frustrated
(Silent River Pack)
The old man was stunned to find Ella and Darren ready to travel, while he’d been cleaning the meat.
They had a similar getup to the one he first met them in, except with cleaner flashier clothes. It made tears come to his eyes at how far they’ve come.
Darren patted Ella’s shoulders. "We’d be setting off. I think traveling light like this will be better—"
"Carry a carriage, Sir Darren." The old man frowned. "You might still handle such long walks but Ella always suffered. She’s still a kid, you know."
Darren stared at the girl and she chuckled nervously. "I can still manage..."
"Prepare a carriage then." Darren dropped his bag. "I guess I should get used to carriages too."
The old man nodded.
He knew the young master didn’t live like royalty as he was born to, because of his early banishment.
But as the leader of a pack, he shouldn’t stick to his traveler image too much.
A carriage was prepared immediately and the two set out for Damancas. Ella stayed by the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of Green Valleys but the trees covered her view.
Darren smiled. "The rider is avoiding the lycan pack."
"Lycan pack? Why is it a lycan pack?" she squeezed her face. "Isn’t it the Princess’s pack? Laurel, right?"
The situation might be difficult to explain to a child, especially one that’s just six.
Darren didn’t want to traumatize her further. She’d already been through a lot in the hands of a lycans.
The ride had been slow and took half a hour, they found themselves at the Damancas entrance. Earlier, Darren had sent a notice so their entry was smooth.
He clutched the big brief case in his hands, it contained the unconscious drugged wolf, he got down the carriage, after it stopped in front of the palace.
He helped Ella get down, and showed the brief case to the guards for inspection but a voice called out. "No need!"
Ella hid behind Darren on hearing her familiar nemesis. Darren frowned a little, looking up at the Prince standing at the very top of the long spirally stairs.
"Prince Kiad, so good to see you."
The Prince kept his hazel eyes down on him, then smiled. "Darren, so terrible to see you. You can be true to your actual feelings. I never hide my thoughts, you know."
"A gift given to the royalty, is it not?" Darren climbed the stairs, holding unto Ella, who carried his brief case.
"You speak like you aren’t of royalty, or do you deny it now your pack crumbled?" Prince Kiad smirked. "I wonder what you want now? To keep hunting Lycans till you die!"
Darren exhaled. "It sounds like you are worried about me. But don’t worry, I can handle myself, your highness."
Prince Kiad frowned at the tone used to call him ’your highness’.
Since he’d been able to deliver the letter to the princess of Green Valleys, his father had given him more credit. So he’s very deserving of his royal title, if Darren didn’t mind.
Darren breathed out when he reached the top. The stairs were always a hassle. He carried Ella down, he had carried her when she got tired at one-third of the stairs.
"Shall I?" he glanced at the Prince.
Prince ignored him, walking into the palace. Darren attempted following him but Kiad turned back. "Don’t let that little dog in." he glared at Ella.
She furrowed her brows and glued to Darren’s side.
"Guards, take her to the palace witch. You brought her here for such reason, didn’t you?"
Darren balled his fists, then turned to Ella with a plastered smile. "We did that pinky promise, right? I’d come for you."
The little girl’s hand was pulled from his clothes by a guard and she was carried down the stairs.
Darren turned back to Prince Kiad, his plastered smile falling. "You could have said so before we climbed."
The Prince huffed, a smirk playing on his lips. "Are you frustrated by it? She’s a liability to your hunt, isn’t she?"
Darren shook his head. The Second Prince of Damancas, but the First King of jumping into conclusions. He hadn’t even said anything about hunting.
"Hail The King! Hail The Queen! Darren Denzel has—"
"Awww! He really came!" the Queen left her seat.
There was a second silent after her outburst.
Prince Kiad frowned. "He said he would. Will he dare go back on his notice after bothering the King and Que—"
"My boy, my boy..." the Queen rushed down her throne, much to her son’s dismay. The King laughed, slapping his thighs. Darren was pulled up from his crouching position.
"You really truly look like her, like my pretty little sister." The Queen rubbed Darren’s face. He endured no matter how much he wanted to squirm and hide from her.
His mother was a distant relative to the Queen but after her family died, the Queen took her in as a little sister.
She had been greatly displeased when Alpha Denzel of Silent River had taken her sister from her but she tolerated since Silent River was under King Titus’s Kingdom.
But her sister’s mate wasn’t good enough, and the Queen even heard of him having mistresses. At the end, her little sister died wretchedly by lycans.
The Queen let go of Darren, looking sober. "You must have been sad and confused after returning to see everything like that, weren’t you, Darren?"
She held his cheeks and he looked down. That was already behind him. He had to move on, he had a new purpose now.
He couldn’t be fixated on revenge if he still had people around him. Revenge will have to wait.
He bent on one knee. "Thank you for your concern, your highness. I am doing the best I can, your highness."
The Queen smiled softly, returning to her seat.
The King cleared his throat, looking at his son.
Prince Kiad stepped forward. "Now, what did you come to the King and Queen for? State your purpose clearly."
Darren rose from the ground. "Very well."
