Chapter 159: Surprise
Chapter Hundred-Fifty-Nine – Surprise
Laurel gulped down the pills and took water to go down with it. Pills were becoming her daily routine since she had to oversee her pack.
They were a lot of things to work on and they all fell on her feeble shoulders but she didn’t want to complain.
It sort of made her excited, everyday, looking forward to the next challenge the pack will face and how she’d handle it.
They had been no more allies reaching out since Damancas and Rolling Stones. Laurel was sure they were more out there but they stayed away, for obvious reasons.
They had lycan leader and no werewolf pack wanted to deal with lycans, unless they needed to.
It also made Laurel realize that importation will be hard as many packs wouldn’t want to send messengers to drop goods at Green Valleys which had Lycans.
Laurel understood the reason the women acted brash that day, it was because having lycans as neighbors will greatly affect how other werewolf packs associated with it.
But she knew there’s nothing she could do even if she thought for years. She’d rather be plan and strategize as the Princess. And hope no drama will come her way.
She gulped down water again, finalizing those thoughts.
Her room door opened slightly. "Princess..."
She looked at Mira, then back at the pills which she hid in a drawer. "Come in, baby. Oh, have you seen Matt recently?"
Laurel didn’t get a reply so she turned again but the girl was gone. "I’m not seeing things, am I? Hearing too?" she noticed her door was still open so she walked out.
This was just afternoon and it’s odd for the twins to still be awake by that time. "Mira?"
She paused, waiting for a response. She noticed the light coming from the dark hall and followed it to another half opened door. "Mira, are you here—"
"Surprise!!"
Laurel stepped back, shielding her eyes from the bright light that suddenly popped out. Surprise for what?
She was held by the waist, and she got flustered. She was pulled towards the light. What the hell were they celebrating now?
She opened her eyes and saw the green cake on the table. It had strawberries on top and some white sprinkles.
The colors made realized. She searched for Mira. She found the little girl seated on Valkyrie’s shoulders with a drooling mouth.
"Another anniversary for Green Valleys, right?" Laurel asked.
"Yayy!!" Lisa cheered, behind her.
Laurel playfully slapped her hand away from her waist.
The Princess never really knew when Green Valleys was made and only celebrated it with Lena whenever the girl mentioned it.
Green Valleys had been existing for a while and like it’s people, it was too stubborn to accepted defeat, and would readily reborn as many times as possible.
Bebe placed a wine glass in front of her, then skipped to Valkyrie. When everyone had one, they held it up, looking at Laurel.
Laurel sighed. She was dragged from her room to this surprise party she didn’t know anything about and now she had to give a speech.
She cleared her throat. "Long Live Green Valleys."
There was no reaction, then the girls chuckled before repeating, "Long Live Green Valleys!"
Laurel glared at them as they chuckled again. She tried to enjoy the surprise party that was thrown on her face, but sneaked out later to check the exports list.
Unlike the girls who were free, she was bound in some other way. She felt her wolf come close to the surface while she returned to her room.
"Laurel, go out, let’s run."
Laurel froze then folded her arms. Elma must not be serious. The export lists had to be reviewed as soon as.
"I feel like running now and I’m quite sure the girls are holed up partying, so no one important can see my fur."
Laurel sighed, looking from her table where the export lists lay, to the jacket she could wear after shifting back.
"Fine." She grabbed the jacket and walked out of the room. The gentle breeze could help her mind.
Outside, at the forest close to Silent River Pack, she shifted, feeling some difficulty but then getting relief. It’s been a while they shifted.
Elma suppressed the howl trying to leave her, then growled at the color of her fur that had seemed even bluer.
"Let it go." Laurel told her.
The wolf slowly increased her pace till she was running quickly past the trees, crushing stones beneath her paw and slapped twigs on her fur.
She couldn’t resist the joyful howl that left her afterwards, she slowed down, noticing a different path than the one she used to visit Silent River before.
Elma turned away from the path, trying to make another round of joy, but her senses caught the looming danger in the air.
"Laurel... there’s something..."
The wolf jumped back, taking steps away from the route as she felt the danger crawling close to her. There was a low snarl and Elma sprinted back.
Whatever it was, was in it’s wild state, and no matter if her chances of defeating it were high, Laurel knew it’s better to run and leave it to the next person.
The Black Claws will have to handle the problem.
"Wait..." Elma slowed down. "I can’t shift back. I don’t want anyone to see me like this."
Laurel clicked her tongue. "Don’t slow down, Elma—"
But her wolf stopped, facing what chased her.
"We are handling it, Laurel. What if those Black Claws Warriors can’t handle it and it goes in. It’s our people that that are next." Elma informed.
Deep down, she wanted to keep running. It was a lycan, she could feel it, a lycan in it’s wild state. Something must’ve set it off.
The monster came in front of the wolf, standing on it’s hind legs with very elongated claws and fangs wet with drool.
Elma frowned. How dare it treat her like food?
"It’s scent feels familiar." Laurel realized.
What’d have brought the lycan close to Green Valleys and Silent River? Could it be a lycan from High Mountains?
But she didn’t know any, and this one felt familiar.
"We have to knock it out." Elma stooped low, staying at a defensive stance. "Or we kill it, if it gives no choice."
