Chapter Hundred-Fifty – Trust
On reaching his study, Stefan caught the scent of a new person, all alone, waiting for him.
He remembered he was to have a visitor and cursed himself for buying time at Laurel’s place.
He hid his scent as he walked in, standing at the entrance and watching the man. He didn’t expect him to look agile. But then, the man was still in his early thirties.
None of the man’s features registered in his brain, not his light brown hair, styled in an undercut, or the scar across his neck to his back that looked like it’d have hurt a lot.
"General." Stefan walked inside, tired of staring.
The man left where he sat, looking guilty for being seated. "Stef... Alpha Stefan. Good to finally meet you."
Stefan raised a brow. "Oh... right." He sat down opposite the man, being separated by the table. "Can I ask your name?"
"Conrad." He said quickly.
Stefan didn’t know how to act before the man.
His memories of him were of a seventeen year old young man who stayed by his father’s side and learnt about battle on the battlefield.
It wouldn’t be farfetched to say he admired him in an older brotherly way, but they had very few interactions before the attack and the rumors that surrounded him.
"I called you here to ask your knowledge for the revival of Black Claws Battle Forces. I hope the short notice didn’t affect anything you were doing back there."
Conrad shook his head. "It was quite lonely, before the young Prince came, but I’m still willing to help in anyway I can. It’s been a while I trained or trained someone."
Stefan nodded at his words, even if he couldn’t place who ’young prince’ was. It couldn’t be Sorren. His brother wasn’t that young.
"I’d be honest with you, not all warriors feel comfortable about you, due to those rumors." Stefan expected him to know which. "So you’d also have to get their trust."
Cade had said that the General getting the warrior’s trust might prove fatal later but Stefan didn’t think he could effectively train with the warriors despising him either.
They’d have to strike a balance. After all, Lead Warrior Baxter will be around them. "We have an understanding?"
"We do, Alpha. I’d do my best for Black Claws again."
Stefan left his seat, feeling pleased with his proclamation. If the rumors were wrong, then the only way for Conrad to restore his honor was working hard for Black Claws again.
That was a noble response. "I’d introduce you to the warriors and the Lead Warrior. Please, follow me."
They both walked out, towards the new Lead Warrior’s quarters. Conrad’s eyes travelled around the building. It was indeed fine architecture.
As they closed the distance to the Lead Warrior’s quarters, the shouts and groans became prevalent.
Stefan would’ve panicked if he didn’t quickly realize that Sorren no longer owned the place. Not even noise was permitted in Sorren’s quarters.
Opening the entrance to the quarters, the hot stench of sweating bodies crashed on Stefan’s nose and he grimaced.
This was no longer Sorren’s quarters.
It felt like a crime had happened at the quarters, warriors training in their armor. Armor that were incomplete and only available for the upper part.
More than forty warriors were present in the yard, some doing pushups, some doing sword training, while the rest panting heavily, while leaning on Sorren’s trees.
Neither Sigma or Sorren should catch them or they’d be manure; Stefan had thought for a second.
He breathed in and walked into the place, hoping to hold his breath till he got into the building.
The stench was a result of their hardwork so he didn’t want to belittle it.
Entering he caught scent of Baxter, and exhaled. "Lead Warrior Baxter, I brought..." he trailed off on seeing him.
He had also worn armor but his belonged to the former lead warrior hence triggering a memory in Stefan.
The lead warrior’s armor was unique, made in black metal with no other design, yet sparkled like it was dipped in ointment for years.
Baxter had always taken the lead warrior’s physique than Sigma did. Stefan almost didn’t believe that Baxter wasn’t the lead warrior’s son but his late sister’s only son.
And with Sigma’s buff body size, he easily contrasted with the former lead warrior’s slender but fit physique. Sigma became a Delta anyway so it’s expected.
"It looked good, huh?" Baxter was all smiles, turning for Stefan to have a better look.
Stefan sighed at his childishness, but he agreed it did fit the young man.
"This is General Conrad, the one who’d be handling the warrior’s training." Stefan introduced and Conrad stepped forward, stretching his hand for a handshake.
Baxter smile fell on realizing who it was. He reluctantly shook his hand. The man looked younger than he expected. An official from that long ago should either be dead or in their forties, right?
"Nice to meet you. I’m Lead Warrior Baxter."
"Conrad."
Baxter raised a brow. That was awfully simple.
"And General Conrad, you could sneak in training for the new Lead Warrior, he has a lot of untapped potential." Stefan added.
Baxter made a small bow. "I’d appreciate it."
He knew he really needed the enhanced training from someone with great battle experience so he didn’t plan to be proud and try self training.
If self training would’ve improved him, he wouldn’t have been a damsel in distress few days ago.
Conrad appreciated the man’s humility and bowed back. "The pleasure is mine."
Seeing it all settled, Stefan took some steps back. "I’d leave it all to you two now. Best of luck."
As the Alpha left, his mind drifted to High Mountains, he should pay them a visit and know how they’re faring.
He should pay Sorren a visit too. His younger brother might most likely ignore him for forcing him to go there.
"At least, everybody’s busy. When everybody’s busy, they’d be nobody to cause problems within the pack."
