Chapter Hundred-Forty-Nine – Seized To Exist
Mira wrapped her small hand around Stefan’s finger, pulling him with her towards Laurel.
Laurel frowned, when he actually followed. What in goddess’ sake did he want to talk about?
She hadn’t submitted the officials report yet but she was still on that. She closed the door when they entered.
Marino felt sleepy so she laid him on a couch.
"Alpha—"
"Can I ask what the Prince of Damancas came to ’talk’ about?" Stefan made himself comfortable on a seat.
Did he think the Prince didn’t come to talk? Laurel wondered, noticing his emphasis on talk. Or could it be the position that he saw them in that made him think so?
She didn’t want to be upfront about it, so asked a diverting question. "You look unwell, did something happen at High Mountains?"
That’s the biggest project of Black Claws currently, rebuilding what they destroyed to accommodate their people.
The Alpha’s heart and soul would be there till it’d get finished successfully. It’d be best if he relocated there too, she hoped for that.
"You are my problem, Laurel. What did the Prince come for? And why didn’t he accept my invitation later?" Stefan brought them back to the topic.
The princess exhaled. She was always the problem somehow. "When you granted me ownership of my pack, I didn’t think I’d have to report everything to you."
Stefan hid his clenched fists behind him. She always played defensive in everything related to him. The little girl holding him let go, and left to the princess.
Stefan guessed she sensed Laurel’s hostility towards him and picked a familiar side. "The Prince of Damancas is an interesting person. That’s all."
Laurel’s eyes darted to Marino, who moved, then back to Stefan. She sat by the boy so he’d rest on her. "Well, if you want to know, all he did was restore our alliance."
The Alpha frowned. Alliance with a pack, under his own, without his prior knowledge?
"You know Green Valleys’ flag was taken down, meaning Green Valleys seized to exist at a point."
Laurel rubbed Marino’s head, hoping it’d soothe her from the annoyance stirring inside her. "I know."
"So is it restoring your alliance? Or creating a new one? And if that’s true, a new alliance can’t be made without your Alpha’s knowledge." Stefan informed.
He didn’t mean to frustrate her efforts but tell her how these things worked. She probably had no idea.
But Laurel did, though she hoped it wouldn’t matter since Black Claws didn’t destroy the system of Green Valleys and only replaced it.
But if the Alpha wanted to take it that way, she’d have to edit her letter to the King and Queen of Damancas. "I understand. I’d let them know."
He didn’t like her tone, and she made it sound like he was actually frustrating her. Maybe he was unknowingly.
He cleared his throat. "Well, for Damancas, they may not readily want an alliance with Black Claws so you can leave your alliance at it is."
Laurel looked up, not at him, but at Mira. She smiled. That was a relief. She rubbed the girl’s cheeks. "I understand."
Having Damancas as an ally, and not connected to Black Claws, meant if their packs ever had issues with Black Claws, Damancas could help handle these Lycans.
Stefan didn’t know if her gesture and words were directed at him or the girl, he nodded. "Except Damancas, every other pack’s alliance should be linked to Black Claws—"
Laurel left for her table. "I received another one from Rolling Stones Pack. She mainly needs protection in return for supply of armory. It’s an old alliance."
Armory was a good trade. Stefan thought. Especially as he planned to start the warriors training under the General his father trained. "We’d accept this."
Laurel returned to Marino. "Then, I’d let you write back to her." That’d mean one less letter to think of writing back.
There was silence after that. Laurel eyed him, expecting his departure already, since there’s nothing else to speak of. But his eyes remained on the letter.
Elma came to the surface and suddenly, all Laurel’s senses became aware of their mate, and she disliked it.
It’s been a while she took in his soothing scent of strawberries and apples, but she didn’t necessarily miss it, after all, at the prison, his scent signaled danger to her.
Still, since his sense of smell was active, unlike hers, she wondered what her scent was like to him? Probably not strong enough to make him appreciate her.
She cleared her throat, as she walked out of the room to get water for Marino. It was a signal to snap Stefan from rereading the letter as she noticed he did.
If there’s something else he needed to say, he should.
"Does his scent annoy you so much, Laurel?" Elma chuckled softly. "I like it."
Laurel grabbed a cup and squeeze it’s base to her palm. She didn’t want to feel those things so he should leave.
"You sway so easily when it comes to your mate, Elma. I feel like I’m the only one for myself at those times." She returned to the room with water for Marino.
She sent a glare to Stefan and he closed his eyes. "Fine."
Fine? She watched him go to the door. Had he remained there on purpose?
"Laurel."
She looked away from Marino that she fed water. "Yes?"
"Those children... are they related to you?"
Did they look like they were? That’d be a compliment to her horrible features. She made a small smile. "They are related to my sister, I take care of them now."
Sister? Stefan remembered that was one of the first questions she asked him. It’d be the maid girl.
He noticed the little girl staring at him. He looked away, and left through the door. "They might be orphans now."
"Is that guilt you feel? I did warn you to drop the attack."
Stefan scoffed at Kai’s words. He hadn’t yet gotten Kai when the tragedy happened, so it’d be easy for his wolf to say those things.
"I’d only do my best to make her happy from henceforth but I don’t regret avenging my kingdom."
