Chapter Hundred-Forty-Eight – Calamity
Elder Busu had been particularly knowledgeable about exportation, he usually exported flowers from his little garden to Damancas.
Laurel felt gratitude. As she strolled back to Valkyrie’s place, she caught scent of the metallic smell of blood.
A shudder ran down her spine as she ran to the direction. Her heart skipped a beat on seeing a store had collapsed, and that store was familiar.
A woman shook her head staring at the rubble. "I told him to leave that rundown place. It’s a good thing his siblings weren’t around when it happened—"
"Matt!" Laurel screamed, rushing towards the rubble. Some men were trying to raise the building up but they couldn’t lift it completely.
It couldn’t be. It couldn’t happen. Blood seeped from under the rubble. Marino’s and Mira’s older brother was trapped there.
Laurel felt someone pull her back when the men lifted a part of the fallen building, causing dust to rise to the sky.
"Be careful, Princess." It was Lisa.
But Laurel shoved her hand away. The one who needed help was poor Matt under those rubble, bleeding and feeling scared.
"Matt, it’s okay, help is here." She tried communicating so he wouldn’t give in to the darkness around him.
One of the men paused, then pointed at a direction. "He’s muttering something here, here, let’s raise this place up."
They moved to that direction and began taking the rubble down. Laurel tried helping but was pulled back by Lisa. There was a commotion behind her but she ignored it.
"Lycan! Lycan!"
Even Lisa moved away from the princess, as someone came behind her. Laurel didn’t move, she could sense what it was but that was the least of her concern.
"No Lycan is supposed to come in here without a guard from Green Valleys." She stated, before turning to him.
He was a new face, older than the Lycans she had met and had a worried expression as he looked over her shoulder to the rubble. "Is someone trapped in there—"
"Did you hear me?"
His brows furrowed and he looked down at the young werewolfess. "I’m Conrad, summoned by the Alpha—"
"You didn’t hear me." Laurel balled her fists. "I said, no lycan enters without a Green Valleys’ warrior. Where’s yours?"
She didn’t want a lycan breaching the little power Green Valleys had, not when forces of nature threatened to take a young wolf from the pack, at the same time.
Conrad frowned.
The men, lifting the rubble, cheered victoriously as they raised a bloody young boy in their arms. Laurel snapped her head to them, and ran towards him.
The other werewolves ran to the boy, disposing their initial fright of a Lycan in their midst. "Should I get him water, your highness?" a man asked.
Laurel nodded. At least to wash off his injuries.
Matt coughed softly. "Take care of my—"
"Don’t try it!" Laurel barked. "You will take care of your siblings yourself, Matt!"
The boy flinched at her tone, then closed his eyes gently, a small smile on his face. Laurel assessed his wounds. Nothing had pierced into his body, thankfully.
He’s young so his healing was slow but in three weeks, at most, he’d feel better. He was a persistent boy, after all.
She left him to the men and women, who took care of his wounds. Her racing heart slowed down. She remembered and turned to him. "Mr. Conrad, why are you still—"
"Thank Goddess." The man smiled. "He didn’t suffer any major injuries, did he?" He took something out of his bag. "Prince Sorren gave this to me. It’s medicine—"
"Thank you." Laurel sighed. "But I feel they’d all feel better if he took medicine from one of our own."
Conrad’s hand fell, he looked at the people who stared at him suspiciously. He couldn’t place why but they were a conquered pack so he didn’t expect friendliness.
"Alright then, Princess." He’d overheard someone call her ’your highness’. "I’d take my leave. The warrior following me had directed me straight to the palace."
Laurel’s shoulders dropped. That’d be Bebe, she’d been doing that recently to ’save time’. "Do take your leave."
The lycan flashed a friendly smile again before leaving. To Laurel, those smiles looked like the ones Elder Busu usually gave her while she was young, except this Lycan’s wasn’t borderline creepy.
She heaved a sigh of relief. His presence was suffocating but she could withstand it. He must be a powerful lycan.
She could only wonder what all these lycans were doing at the palace. He was the third one in a span of three days. Her eyes returned to Matt.
"Please, all his properties that weren’t destroyed, take them to the lead warrior’s quarters, he’d be moving there."
The man she spoke to, nodded. "Yes, Princess."
They began work immediately and Laurel hurried back to her quarters to get a breather.
Almost all the information she got from Elder Busu left her head in that moment of panic. She needed sleep if she’d recover them.
She closed the entrance door behind her and exhaled. Elma came to the surface and she smiled. "Wanna go on that run now?" It’d help them clear their mind.
"He finally paid us a visit."
Laurel frowned on catching his scent. She noticed his presence in the quarters.
At the same moment, she noticed all the wolves in Valkyrie’s quarters were either at Valkyrie’s or Ferdinand’s quarters. Her quarter, were Stefan stood, was empty. "And the twins..."
The door of Valkyrie’s quarter opened and she let out Marino and Mira who ran to her. Valkyrie gave her an encouraging look.
Laurel nodded. They might assume the Alpha wanted to speak on something serious with her.
She held the twins in her arms, grateful for the calamity that just passed by. They didn’t lose another family.
"Alpha Stefan, please join me in my quarters." She said, walking past him. She stopped when he didn’t follow.
Looking at him, his eyes were darkened on her. She must have done some kind of wrong in his eyes. Only she was capable of wrongdoings anyway. She scoffed internally.
She dropped Mira, and whispered. "Go to that old man and tell him to follow Princess to her quarters."
Mira turned to Stefan, a little frightened, she held unto Laurel’s dress and screamed. "Old man! Princess said you should follow her to her—" Laurel held her lips.
Stefan snapped from whatever trance he was in. A smile tugged on his lips.
