Chapter Hundred-Forty-Six – Dense
Baxter tightened the sash on his waist. He looked up at the mirror, a determined expression on his face.
Next time, he’d be the one saving the damsels in distress, not being the damsel in distress.
The day was his inauguration, and even if it was small scale, only between the officials, he felt like the whole pack, his dead loved ones as well, were watching him.
Dylan walked into his room. "The warriors are ready to greet you. Leave that mirror already."
Baxter smirked, facing him. "You know you’d be a warrior under me. You should try to get on my good side or I’d send you back to High Mountains."
Dylan’s face straightened. Was that a threat? But he didn’t want to find out, he looked down and apologized immediately. "S-Sorry. Don’t send me back, please."
Baxter laughed. The place wasn’t that bad. Or was it his cousin that made the boy want to stay? He’d prefer a boy Sigma’s age to Sorren anytime. "Let’s leave then."
"Yes, sir."
Baxter strolled out confidently, but he paused on seeing her. A smile crept to his face as he hurried to her. "Are you feeling okay?" he placed a hand on her shoulder
Valkyrie shuddered on hearing his voice and the hand on her shoulder, she so badly wanted to cut it off. But she bit it in and exhaled. "I’m fine. How are you feeling?"
She had to play along, for the greater good.
The lead warrior retrieved his hand, folding his arms across his chest. "I feel so much better, thanks to you. Oh, and I called you for something."
Valkyrie faced him. That was the only reason she was here. The princess had speculated that the lead warrior will be grateful to her and she could use it to get his favor.
Even if he was an ungrateful one, Valkyrie was bent on getting close using this act she did, an act she regretted every second. She should’ve killed him and borne it all.
Baxter leaned close to her but Valkyrie’s facial expression remained unchanged.
"You never told me your name?"
Her shoulders drooped. Surely, that’s not what he wanted to ask her. Was he the ungrateful type? Shouldn’t he ask her how she wanted him to repay her?
She cleared her throat, thinking of how to change the topic. "Did you head hurt when you fainted?" she wished it sounded caring, but it only oozed menace.
Dylan frowned at the question but Baxter smiled widely. "Yeah, I did bleed from my head but it’s all good now. Don’t worry too much."
Who’d worry? Valkyrie forced a small smile. "In that case, I’d leave you to your inauguration. Excuse me."
She walked faster before Baxter could call her back. She feared she may actually stab him if she had to stand in front of him any longer.
He sighed, before glancing at Dylan who looked away immediately with a small grin.
"Why are the girls in Green Valleys so difficult?" Baxter asked with a sullen expression. "Did something happen?"
"Didn’t you notice?" Dylan asked. There was no way he didn’t notice the disdain and annoyance she spoke to him in. Dylan wouldn’t readily blame her.
To her, Baxter was related to the lycans that attacked her pack. And worse, she followed him to a mission, brought him back, only to be held hostage under an accusation.
Beta Cade was only being careful but for an innocent person who went out of there way to help, it’d be annoying to her and she could regret her actions.
"I did notice..." Baxter looked down. "... that she was so reluctant to tell me her name. I’m sure it’s a pretty name so she’s shy to tell me, right?"
Dylan’s expectations flattened. He shouldn’t be surprised Baxter was so dense, when he’s related to Sigma.
He kept those thoughts to himself to avoid punishment.
"Shall we continue to the inauguration?"
"We shall." Baxter chuckled, walking towards the palace.

Laurel warned the girls not to go to Valkyrie’s room after she returned. She was a screaming mess and sort out blood. Unlike Jessika, she might not have the patience to fake friendship with someone she hated.
Well, they needed the favor. It’s all for the greater good.
"It’s been a while we saw our mate."
Laurel paused. Her wolf did not just come to the surface to tell her that.
And whose their mate? That lycan that’d been frustrating her efforts? She ignored her.
"At least, he’s not crazy about killing us anymore. You know how crazy he was about it before." Elma said.
"You never know." Laurel took out the golden gift box given to her by Damancas. "You just never know."
Since he saw her with the Prince of Damancas, he had stayed away, not like he came close before. She now lived far away from the palace so they were few meeting points.
She took out the golden crown and wrapped it around her wrist. She had also realized it could bend like a bracelet. She needed to gather her elders so these were important.
"Lisa," she waved at the girl so she’d stop, "did you confirm that’s what was said? Sigma told you."
Lisa nodded firmly. "I met him. He said the Alpha wants to officially meet the officials of our pack as soon as we can. They don’t need to be complete."
Laurel smiled at her. If she could face Sigma after her last punishment, then she had grown out of it or shouldered it with greater responsibility than a fifteen should hold.
But they were short of intelligent people so anyone would do at the point. Most of their officials were still in training but Stefan might not mind.
The major official they didn’t have was a Delta, and Laurel didn’t know where to look for one.
Frida, the daughter of a Beta, was the best choice but she was unwilling, and Laurel couldn’t imagine her Beta and Delta being from that one awful family.
"Alright, Lisa. Thanks, I’d go and speak with our elders, and see if there’s any wisdom left in their heads." She walked away, with hastened steps.
