Chapter 145: Pain

Chapter Hundred-Forty-Five – Pain

At the new Lead Warrior’s quarters at the palace, Dylan paced about, waiting for the medicine Sigma was supposed to return with.

He paused, looking at the entrance. Did Sigma forget? Or he doesn’t want to bring it anymore?

He shook the thoughts off his head. Sigma wouldn’t do that, he knew not bringing the medicine will mean death for Baxter.

"I should do what I can, for the meantime." He returned to the room where Baxter laid. Seeing the blood and cuts on his body, Dylan wondered if he was still alive.

There’s been almost no change since he left to wait for Sigma. The wolfsbane must be slowing down his healing.

Dylan gritted his teeth. At this rate, they’d lose someone again. "Sigma, where are you?" He whispered.

The door was kicked open. "Dylan, I’m here!"

Dylan rushed to him, taking the pills from him. "What took you so long! Do you know how many to give him?"

Sigma collapsed besides Baxter. "Alpha said he had ran out of these medicines the last time he got infected with wolfsbane. I had to go to High Mountains to ask Prince Sorren for more."

Dylan paused, before feeding the medicine to Baxter. So Sigma went all the way to High Mountains just now?

In that scenario, he had been faster than would’ve expect. Seeing how heavy he panted, Dylan guessed Sigma might not dislike Baxter as much as he thought.

And that was good, they should be family.

"Baxter will survive, don’t worry."

Sigma heaved a sigh. "Just to fight rogues and he came back half dead. Was he being reckless or he’s just weak?"

Dylan nodded in agreement. "But he brought Lady Jade back so Alpha said he passed the test and will become—"

"What!" Sigma jumped from the ground.

Dylan shook his head. Was he still bent on being the lead warrior even as Delta? He inched close to him. "You can order Baxter around as a Delta."

Sigma still didn’t look satisfied. "That’s my father’s—"

"I’m sure your father would’ve taken Delta position if he got it." Dylan added. "Infact, I’m sure he was looking forward to it later, since the last Delta had no heir."

Sigma began considering it. "You think so?"

Dylan forced a smile, while nodding. "Yeah."

But he was very sure there’s no way a lead warrior will think of being Delta. The rank difference was high.

And Sigma’s father wouldn’t be the type of man who’d leave his rank duties to find another just because it’s more profitable.

Still Dylan let Sigma believe that, if it’d make him finally drop wanting to be Delta. Sigma smirked. "Fine then."

At that moment, Baxter coughed, awake. Dylan rushed to get him some water to take the medicine down.

The pain rang all over his body and it felt like he was being lashed repeatedly. Baxter closed his eyes shut, not wanting to wake up to his defeat, as he thought.

"You’re really something making everyone worry about you. It was just rogues." Sigma sighed.

Baxter slowly opened his eyes. He didn’t recognize where he was but if he’s little cousin was close, it should be a safe place. "Sig..." he smiled. "I’m sorry I worried you."

"Worry me? Don’t flatter yourself." Sigma huffed.

Baxter’s smile widened. He must have a shy cousin. If he was safe here, then he won, right? He must’ve passed the test. His brain hadn’t yet formulated all that happened.

But along with the pain in his body, he felt pain in his heart. He must have lost something.

"Is Lady Jade safe?" his brain remembered the mission. "Was I able to bring her—"

"Yes!" Dylan stuck something into his mouth. "Eat it slowly, Prince Sorren says it’d make you feel better."

Baxter’s face contorted. This very bitter substance would make him feel better? If it wasn’t another painful prank of that Prince.

He closed his eyes. "It’s good she’s safe then."

Something else must’ve happened.

"Ah, now you’re awake, I have to tell Beta Cade to let her go." Dylan dropped the medicine in his hand. "I don’t know why the Beta will hold her hostage."

Baxter thought hard on what he possibly meant. Then his body jerked up forcibly. He bit in the pain that came after.

"Hey! Stay down. Where do you want to go?"

"Sigma, that.. that werewolfess, is she okay? Did she get killed?" he looked down. "I don’t remember but I think, those rogues..."

"She’s fine!" Sigma slammed him down. "She brought you back, then told Cade about Jade. But because her spear had blood, Beta Cade held her hostage."

Baxter stared into space, before exhaling deeply. That’s great. That’s wonderful.

He rubbed his head. "I didn’t think she’d care enough to help me... she wasn’t injured, right?"

Dylan frowned. "Didn’t you hear him? She didn’t come back injured, but you came in like that. And her spear had blood so Beta Cade confined her till you awake."

Baxter frowned. "Then, please, tell Beta Cade that her spear was taken from her and used on me. I thought they killed her to get it. Please, she saved my life."

Dylan glanced at Sigma, who shrugged. The warrior hurried away. "I’d go and tell Beta Cade then."

Baxter relaxed his muscles. The pain became bearable, so bearable with the thoughts that he saved everyone, at least, he tried to. The werewolfess finished it.

"I’ve never felt so much gratitude for someone." He said to Sigma, smiling. "Apart from your father."

Sigma wondered where that came from? And who did he show gratitude to? He tried not to care.

"Do you know her name though?" Baxter asked.

"Why will I care? Ask Cade, she was his maid after he spared her life... ask their Princess actually. Cade might not know."

Princess? They had one? Baxter chuckled. "These Green Valleys have so many interesting people. I understand why Prince Sorren was sad to leave."

Sigma frowned, walking out. "And he was replaced with you, Mr. Annoying. Hurry and get better so you’d start your duties."

A grin came to Baxter’s lips. "Sure."

He had heard Mr. Amazing and coupled with his cousin’s encouragement to get better, he felt better already.
